    The lock up problem on the left front is classic rubber hose colapse. The hose colapse allows presure to flow to the caliper but wont allow tge fluid to return. When you open the bleeder it relieves tge pressure.

    Them front rims look like the rims off an Old Cutlass from the 70s-80s. I had some that I used on my 64 Ford Econline pickup truck from off a 71 442. My brother in law put them on the Ford Econoline and went with chrome reverse big and little steelies with moon hubcaps on the 71 442 that I eventually bought from them as well. I really like how they look too. My ex GF had the same El Camino in the maroon flavor paint. Love those old cars too.

    • @jamesberry276
      @jamesberry276 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Elcaminos were like wagons UNTIL the G-body (78 - 87's)

    Ok, one more tidbit: The ported vacuum switch on the thermostat housing is to keep the EGR from opening cold or for the air cleaner air door that helps it warm up faster in cold climates. :)

      El Camino frame is all by itself,wagons are different. Front suspension is same as S10 except for the steering cross link, because the S10 is a narrower track with. S10 drop spindle and front spring will work on Camino. That carb is just a two barrel quadrjet . Check the float, it's probably bad. Plastic float and ethanol don't mix well.

    I had a 1980 El Camino when I was 14 years old! I may or may not have driven it for a year before I even got a permit much less a license. I spent more time working on it than actually driving it. Between it burning oil like a mosquito truck and leaking oil from every where possible, I had to add a quart of earl at least once a week! Looked cool (to me) but by FAR the least reliable vehicle I have EVER owned. Oh and it cost $500.

    The valve with the hoses is a thermal vacuum switch.
    The thing on the motor that you were asking about earlier in the video is a smog/air pump. The pulley for it was inside the cab.

  • @jeepdoctv

    That sir is a thermostatically controlled ported vacuum switch. Happy new year!!

  • @515Earl
    @515Earl ปีที่แล้ว +13

    The switch on the thermostat housing is a "thermo-vacuum switch" Your explanation of how you think it works is basically spot on. As far as the driver's side brake hanging up, the left front brake hose is collapsed inside the rubber. It acts like a check valve. It lets brake fluid through, but wont let it release back to the master when you let off the pedal. As cheap as they are, just change both the fronts if you plan on driving it in traffic.

    Really like the El-Camortski. My recommendation? Get a gas tank, sort the wiring and vacuum lines, fix the carb, fix the floorboard, get yourself some proper drop springs, pound the dents out of the tailgate. And before I forget, get a replacement inside drivers door handle. Then come up with a cool name and decal for the truck like your YouHaul trucks.

  • @lukeupton9597
    @lukeupton9597 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The “turbocharger” under the hood is an emissions junk smog pump, either locked up or they just removed the pulley and bypassed for “more power”. But of course they left all the vacuum junk hooked up. The exhaust had that new pipe scabbed in because they cut out the catalytic converter. The front brakes are sticking and not returning because the rubber line has deteriorated and collapsed on the inside, trapping fluid/pressure. That’s why opening the bleeder allowed it to move because pressure bled off, probably pulled some air back into the system as well which is why it would spin even with the pedal pushed, had to build up fluid pressure again to overcome the air maybe? The transmission was probably in gear when you first checked the fluid level so pump was engaged, that’s why it was low. Then you added fluid, car started moving, you put it in park disengaging the pump, boom fluid level high. Love the custom exhaust work though. I wonder if the M90 supercharger off the Series II 3800 Pontiac, Olds, Buick, or Monte Carlo SS could be put on there. Little blow through carb action. I know you’re not a fan of or super comfortable with EFI.

    The thermal vacuum switch you asked about can be important unless you are going to take everything "factory" off of it ... the ignition advance can be actuated/suppressed according to temperature(as you correctly surmised) - there is a middle road that retains the basic systems and deletes stuff like the A.I.R. pump.

    Besides a pain in the rear, I belive the technical term for that is:
    Vacuum advance temperature controlled switch.

    What a find, Puddin! Beautiful. I really really enjoyed this video. It’s a good omen for the beginning of the year.

    Take those wheels that came on it and paint them creamy white with some orange and yellow pinstripes to match the body and it might be even better

    The 3.8 liter is one of the best engines ever built. They've routinely gotten over 300k miles on them ,few engines can boast that.

      You're thinking of the Buick designed engine that was refined for FWD applications.
      This El Camino has the small block Chevy V-6. A completely different animal.

      It is completely different, but the Chevy has a good reputation, too. I mean, it isn't for towing, but...

    I had a 93 Chevy truck with a 4.3. Rebuilt it a little hot and got 28 mpg going back and forth to work.

    On that front brake... it's either the caliper or that hose. Those hoses collapse inside.

    I had a '79 Volare with a Leaning Tower of Power. All six of the electrodes on the plugs were completely encased in ash. You could not see them at all, and that car would still do 120 all day long. You can't beat a 225. I still have those plugs, and everyone says I am full of shit when I say that engine ran on those plugs, but it did.

    New T-shirt idea: Cross-eyed Bald Eagle holding a slice-n-dice in one talon and a poorly cut piece of sheet metal in the other. The words: “In Eagle Eye We Trust” along the bottom like a coin. 😅

    Pollution pump is the thing you see without the belt on it. And yes 3.8 was in most cutlass, regale, and some other g bodies. Especially the grand national, same motor just better internals and turbo

      @markhudgins1280 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are correct. However the 3.8 in this El Camino is a Chevy 3.8 (229) V6. Kinda the precursor to the 4.3 vortec V6.

To see one my fav car youtubers working on one hits all the right buttons.
