    Roger is such an inspirational speaker, so skilled at cutting through BS and saying what no one wants to say but what needs to be said. I'm glad to see that XR hasn't disowned him. His less emotionally charged, more strategically analytical videos are also brilliant. I'm still waiting for his "path to victory" video that he hinted at in the "hypocrisy" video. IMHO XR should be giving a huge push in the promotion of his book.

    The problem with Roger Hallam is that he fails to mention that there is no solution for abrupt, multi-exponential, run away climate change. It does no good getting arrested. It does no good setting oneself on fire in front of Trump's motorcade. He is mainly in the stage of bargaining and depression. We must view this as a hospice situation. Peaceful acceptance.

    • @RussCR5187
      @RussCR5187 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Allow me to offer a quote I have found helpful in this situation. It's from Vaclav Havel, the former president of the Czech Republic and author of the book The Power of the Powerless: "Hope is definitely not the same thing as optimism. It is not the conviction that something will turn out well, but the certainty that something makes sense, regardless of how it turns out.” To me, what makes sense is to honor the very existence of life -- apparently so rare in the known universe -- by fighting for the continuation of life on earth. I agree that the quality of life will probably be much, much different in the future. But I refuse to give up on the future of my children and my grandchildren. In the end, no matter what happens, I want to be able to look my children in the eye and say "I tried."

      @@RussCR5187 I appreciate your perspective. I am a father. Terminal conditions must be accepted. Some fight stage 4 cancer for the sake of loved ones. The outcome is the same. We must accept where people are at with end of life care. 37 years in the medical field. I have had to give terminal diagnoses. Honesty, love and support is the best we can offer.

    • @RussCR5187
      @RussCR5187 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jimsigrist5506 Point taken, although the stage 4 cancer analogy doesn't seem quite fitting to me in this context. By definition the future is uncertain. We can never know for sure. It's too large a leap for me to go from an individual's acceptance about the end of his or her own life to a situation involving the possible (or even likely) suffering and death of billions of people. I believe I will find many aspects of honesty, love, and support in working with a community of others toward the goals I described.

      In the spirit of being disruptive to garner attention and spur thinking (which is what XR is all about), Roger doesn't just speak truth to power in this video, he confronts power with the truth. Uncomfortable? Yes, even to someone who is already on board (i.e., me). Egotistical? Not in my opinion. Unfortunately, it's still not polite to say that it's time to stop being polite. But that's exactly what we now must say. I believe we're well into a climate emergency and we must now act like it.

I don’t agree with Rogers starting premise so would not be offering alternatives to his what he sees as the situation. His claims eg 6 billion deaths etc are widely discredited and the morbid doomsday scenarios that he paints have been questioned by plenty of credible scientists. Should we be creating changes to the way we treat each other and the planet we live on? Yes. Should we be doing it in a way he suggests? Not in my opinion.
