A 40 yo is really amazing. Life expectancy was probably lower. I wonder how she passed.

What country are you from, may I ask?
I can't say for sure, but I would imagine that Gibraltar has a similar thing to the UK and other European countries; Student Loans.
You take out a Student Loan which historically has a very low interest rate (well, historically it did. The swines in gov just upped it to 6.5%)
I'm from England and that's the case for us. Anyone, no matter if they're rich or poor can take out a student loan. You just have to get into a university to do so. You start to pay it back once you earn a certain fee (for me it was £18k, most students nowadays it is £26k or so).
I currently pay back approximately £60/month in student loan fees. Comes straight out of my wages so I never see that money.
After 25 years, the loan is written off.
As for Experiences around the world; that's a bit trickier. I would imagine if he's working at some university or museum, they might "sponsor" him, or alternatively he may have to fund it himself (donations, own savings etc).
