I too have a simply camping light setup. For the rear, I have a rigid 12V 600mm LED bar that's stuck (using a combination of magnets and velcro) on the inside window of my upper tailgate (w/c lift up to open - ie. 80 Series). This light comes w/a low light & motion sensor, allowing me to set it up to only come on when dark, and if someone is around the tailgate area. The side lights I only use a high quality & very powerful magnetic LED Torch that has white & real red lights (not amber). The red light provides fantastic illumination w/o overpowering the camp once everyone is chilaxing. But I recently bought the rechargeable Hardkorr U-Lite LED lights set (4x) to mount on the arms of my 280 Degree awning. These are stuck on the arms using built-in magnets & elastic straps. I can also mount them along the body of my 4WD. On occasion, I also use a 12V LED lamp that screws on top of a 3m extendable pole to provide an overall campsite light (think street lamp). This too is dimmable and can be switched to amber. We tend to only use this light while setting up camp in the dark or when cooking at night. But it's immediately switched off once all of that is done. We let the firepit create the natural lighting most of the times.
Love your videos Tim, keep them coming. Love your approach to overlanding as well. Keep it simple. I'm with you on the subject of lights. I like having a fire going to give a nice ambient soft light to the camp site. I have a dimmable portable light bar that gets placed under the awning and is a 12v cig lighter plug. And a 1000lumen portable USB chargeable small light with three light intensity settings that I use formal preparation or hunting around in the back of the wagon. Lastly a USB chargeable head wearing light for trips outside the camp boundary. It's simple, light weight and always ready. I agree with you on not being a fan of creating the MCG out in the bush. Lights get turned off when not in use so night vision improves and we can enjoy the serenity. Stay safe mate, love your channel

Bloody Awesome Simple Intelligent Camping I have a couple of head torches, a hand held torch, a lamp and some strip lighting. All rechargeable low consumption LED. I camp with the absolute bare essentials. If I need something I haven't packed, then bad luck, I manage without it.

Yeah my budget was & still now cheap diy, got some ebay pod lights hard-wired around the 4wd, some kings strip lights inside the canopy and couple recharge/battery lights, ridiculous the prices of some 4wd accessories

Thats the go mate. Those magnetic lights are great to mount around your car at any spot you want one. Mobile lights are the way to go for down the track compared to hard wired in lights. Top stuff mate. Cheers Tim
Great video I see you don’t have yellow lights When you go camping in winter does your white lights attract insects I have fixed lights on my arb canopy and they attract insects as they are white I wouldn’t get these installed again if I bought a new vehicle -- using work lights white for camping

I run the Hard Korr lights. One strip off my main awning and one off the awning set up off the back of the ute. They run off a remote control (a bit bloody fancy pants I know) I have 2 led strip lights under the hard lid. For around camp I have a head torch and a 1500 lumens torch. P.S I'm scared of the dark . . Lol 😂

I have 2 rechargeable led lights woth mozzie zappers inbuilt. And a led dolphin. When i finish the canopy build I'll install a motion sensor for those lights.
I'm on the same page. We have two rechargeable lanterns which last 3 or 4 nights between charges. One led strip light for kitchen and then just head torches.
One thing that pisses me off (apart from idiots playing loud music and leaving rubbish) is illuminating the surrounding bush like Cape Canaveral on final countdown and destroying the ambience… you know, like sitting back and watching a fire under the stars. I have one LED strip mounted to the tail gate of the 80 and that’s it. I have a Kings LED strip with dimmer that’s in a rear drawer but I don’t think that’s seen a current since 2016. Too many dickheads buy too much gear they don’t need. I know, we’ve all been guilty of that at some point. 😂

Got 1 white/yellow strip light with hooks so I can move it around my rig. Winter I use the beany with the led and summer the good old head torch. Always carry a led torch and a rechargeable spot light. I just enjoy the glow of the camp fire, don’t use the lights unless there’s a need. K.I.S.S. Keep It Simple Stupid is my motto.
Just got a led light bar strip hard mounted to the underside of each canopy door that lifts up under my awning kinda like yours. Awning also has led lights built into the arms but ive never needed them.

Hey Tim. I absolutely hate bright camp lights. I always take my makita lights with me if only a night or 2, I take 2x 5ah batteries just in case. If longer with the family I take few extra batteries... great Vid thanks

@@timbates4wdadventures I too have a husky, works a treat. Was contemplating buying a battery saw for one nighters so I don’t need to carry fuel. If you haven’t already got batteries and a charger, it makes for an expensive set up.
There’s no doubt LEDs have been a complete game changer Tim, and they are the core of my setup. My old reliable gas lamp still gets an outing now and then though, particularly if I’m camping in summer near permanent still water. It’s far brighter than anything else and handy to set up away from the car, keeping the bugs away from the kitchen. Orange LEDs are only partially effective.
Far out mate, the old gas lantern. I had one many years ago. I wonder if you can still buy mantles for them. LED lights sure are the big game changer for camp lights, a better option i think than paying for hard wired lights. Thanks mate for your reply. Cheers Tim

I recently killed my LED Lenser torch that I had had for ages as I didn't check the batteries and they leaked. I almost cried. I have a couple of tiny ones in the vehicle in case of emergencies and use a torch with my Makita batteries.
Good one Tim. Glamping is not something on my list either. Id like to camp easy and simple. I have just two small slim LED lights behind the sparewheel of my Patrol and thats about it for hard wirings. Others are my Milwaukee flood light. For an emergency i always keep a small rechargeable torch or something charged and ready. But i let nothing to over run the ambient light around the camp fire.
Nice setup Tim! A couple of small magnetic LED lights from Caos (which can attach to the exterior of the car) and an LED headlamp have usually worked well for me on outback trips.
Good to see some online content keeping it simple/ accessible, too many people showing of fancy sponsored gear for the sake of it. Kids and I have a headtorch each, and I have a set of rechargeable lights (Hardkorr U-lights) that have recently replaced some inflatable solar rechargeable Luci lights I used to run (one popped). U-lights are great as they cast a wide beam of ambient light, have three settings including yellow/ orange, with both a magnetic back and elastic strap to mount on things around camp.

You can charge the M18s from Milwaukee using a dedicated car charger, it's a decent amount more efficient and if you don't have an invertor, you can still charge your tool batteries. Have you thought about going dual colour led light to stop the bugs?
G'day mate, There's not been a trip yet where that battery torch has gone flat or even close to going flat. I charge it at home when ever it's needed, and last's for months. I know about the different coloured lights for not attracting bugs, but to be honest, i have never found bugs at night to ever be an issue. Gday mate, Thanks very much mate for your feedback on my videos. I really appreciate it. The rear bar on my Patrol is quite heavy, but I wouldn’t take it off for anything. I’m my recent GU Patrol Walk Around video, I talk about my rear bar and how it saved the back of my Patrol in a rear end collision. Maybe check that video out mate. It’s made by Kaymar. Not sure if they still make them any more. I’ve not seen the bar made by ARB. Steel rear bars are heavy, but they can save the back of your car in a rear crash as mine did. Tim thanks for the feedback thanks for getting back with me I meant to say front bumper instead of the rear bumper I was talking about your front bumper I'm not sure if you're from the USA or from another country but here in the USA if you can look it up online look up ARB front Summit bumper it's identical to the bumper you have on the front of your vehicle do you not like your bumper would you take it off why is it bother you because it's so heavy could you explain thanks Tim I'm asking these questions cuz I'm debating if I should get one for my truck or not

Bull bars are handy to mount accessories like driving lights, winch, aerials etc. plus they provide a lot of protection if in an accident or an animal strike. The bar on the front of my Patrol is made of steel. It’s heavy. I am contemplating replacing the front bar with an alloy bar. Alloy bar would be a lot lighter. I’m down here in Australia mate. Sweet setup, Tim. Nice and simple. I'm not a fan of built-in rechargeable batteries, so I have standardised on AAs and solar-rechargeable. I have an Arlec 5 watt solar security light and an old tripod for area lighting, a Companion UFO light and a no-name 20 metre/200 LED string of fairy lights for under the awning, a Barebones Mini Edison lantern for the swag, a Dolphin torch that lives in the ute, and an old Coleman CPX D-cell lantern as a backup. The fairy lights work surprisingly well at providing a warm, soft background light and as a added bonus turn themselves on and off.

Mainly run 2 lights - the baseball cap with 4 LRDs under the peak which is great as the peak stops most of the light shinning in other peoples eyes - just wish I could get one with USB rechargeable batteries but the little button batteries last fair while. The other light is a USB rechargeable LED batwing,- find I only mainly use one side so have some yellow plastic film which I put over the LEDs so as not to attract the bugs, - also pretty easy to string the batwing up in a tree if more light needed and it lasts all night
Nice setup Tim. I’ve got a small LED fitted into the rear door of my 200 from a legend of a bloke here in Perth, puts out plenty of light in the back with the tailgate down. I’ve got a $50 12v Rovin strip light (white and amber) that I used to suspend under my awning with light bungee cord and cheap alum carabiners to hook on at the top of poles. Recently purchased a USB rechargeable Biolite AlpenLite lantern which is pretty good, again a cheap alum carabiner and some strategically drilled holes on my awning arms gives me plenty of places to hang it out if the way. And I use a AA battery head torch, but I’d get a USB one next time. Last big trip was 12 days through the eastern Pilbara and I didn’t get the strip light out once. 100% agree about not enjoying stadium lighting at camp, much prefer focussed task lighting and then no or low light when sitting around the fire. Although two weeks ago, on the Holland Track, my mate Denis’ white strip light managed to attract all the massive flying kamikaze cockroaches (the Devil’s Spawn) away from the campfire and the backs of our heads 😂. Yeah I have way less than that although I always seem to take way more than I ever use. I have no fixed lights in the vehicle and use a bit of a mix of other things. I have a mega Led Lenser head torch, that I call the lighthouse, which I use around camp and a couple of cheap LED lights that I run off a 20k mah battery banks that I have that I charge phones with as well. Just plug them into the vehicle when we're out and about and they never seem to go flat. I use Makita chordless tools and have as many batteries as the average tradie.................sad but true. I use them to run a Makita Lantern, which is awesome, a mini chainsaw, torch and I have an adapter to USB so I can run lights or charge stuff off them as well. As you say the batteries last forever. They do a 12v charger but it's pretty pricey and I never seem to flatten batteries anyway. Even with only those lights I only ever seem to really use one of my head torches and occasionally hang up the USB lights which are just bright enough to see over a fairly large area. I like to have dual uses for things so I can use this stuff at home as well. Most of the time a campfire gives plenty of light.

Good setup mate. I have 2 spotties on the front. I have 2 small thin side lights on the wedgetail rack. Individually switched for left and right. Milwaukee head torch that i use at work. Thats it.

I’m usually the only one at camp out of two or three other families who has lights, so I carry lots of head torches and general lights for everyone :) I love the magnetic little Hardkorr lights that come in a pack of four with a charging cable that can charge them all at the same time. You can hang them off branches or attach them to kids running around so you can see where they’ve got to at night. Just have to remember to get them back in the morning or remember where you left them. On a positive note the magnet is so strong you can drive all the way home and find them still stuck to the side of the car when you do forget and drive off leaving them there 😂

Head torch, two or three hand torches, led striplight under the awning that can either connect to my auxiliary battery or to a 12volt socket. All torches are rechargable, i don't like having to try and find batteries when I don't need to. The rear of my patrol is still rather standard.
Running the same tim awning light rear internal led light Rechargeable lantern and my Dewalt light runs my electric chainsaw etc I do have a baseball cap with 4 leds on the peak great for checking on the roast in the camp oven Nice and simple
I've got a couple of those rechargeable bug zapper led lights from Jaycar. Inside the camper we have couple of those strips semi permanently installed, that's it.....everything must have multiple uses approach.

Just got a led light bar strip hard mounted to the underside of each canopy door that lifts up under my awning kinda like yours. Awning also has led lights built into the arms but ive never needed them.

I have a headlamp for reading and an old-school battery torch backup.

Hey Tim. I absolutely hate bright camp lights. I always take my makita lights with me if only a night or 2, I take 2x 5ah batteries just in case. If longer with the family I take few extra batteries... great Vid thanks

I’ve had my Husky for over 30 years.

Was contemplating buying a battery saw for one nighters so I don’t need to carry fuel.
If you haven’t already got batteries and a charger, it makes for an expensive set up.

There’s no doubt LEDs have been a complete game changer Tim, and they are the core of my setup. My old reliable gas lamp still gets an outing now and then though, particularly if I’m camping in summer near permanent still water. It’s far brighter than anything else and handy to set up away from the car, keeping the bugs away from the kitchen. Orange LEDs are only partially effective.

I had one many years ago.
I wonder if you can still buy mantles for them.
LED lights sure are the big game changer for camp lights, a better option i think than paying for hard wired lights.

@@timbates4wdadventures yea that's the secret Tim the one's I have fitted in trees at camp site have 3 settings so when cooking plenty of light and when sitting around can drop them to low or even turn 1 off but like you have find what suits your requirements

I recently killed my LED Lenser torch that I had had for ages as I didn't check the batteries and they leaked.
I almost cried.
I have a couple of tiny ones in the vehicle in case of emergencies and use a torch with my Makita batteries.
Good one Tim. Glamping is not something on my list either. Id like to camp easy and simple. I have just two small slim LED lights behind the sparewheel of my Patrol and thats about it for hard wirings.
Others are my Milwaukee flood light.
For an emergency i always keep a small rechargeable torch or something charged and ready.
But i let nothing to over run the ambient light around the camp fire.

Nice setup Tim! A couple of small magnetic LED lights from Caos (which can attach to the exterior of the car) and an LED headlamp have usually worked well for me on outback trips.

Good to see some online content keeping it simple/ accessible, too many people showing of fancy sponsored gear for the sake of it. Kids and I have a headtorch each, and I have a set of rechargeable lights (Hardkorr U-lights) that have recently replaced some inflatable solar rechargeable Luci lights I used to run (one popped). U-lights are great as they cast a wide beam of ambient light, have three settings including yellow/ orange, with both a magnetic back and elastic strap to mount on things around camp.

You can charge the M18s from Milwaukee using a dedicated car charger, it's a decent amount more efficient and if you don't have an invertor, you can still charge your tool batteries.
Have you thought about going dual colour led light to stop the bugs?

There's not been a trip yet where that battery torch has gone flat or even close to going flat.
I charge it at home when ever it's needed, and last's for months.
I know about the different coloured lights for not attracting bugs, but to be honest, i have never found bugs at night to ever be an issue.
So, lends me to think, just how important is it where those yellow lights are needed.

The rear bar on my Patrol is quite heavy, but I wouldn’t take it off for anything.
I’m my recent GU Patrol Walk Around video, I talk about my rear bar and how it saved the back of my Patrol in a rear end collision.
Maybe check that video out mate.

Not sure if they still make them any more.
I’ve not seen the bar made by ARB.
Steel rear bars are heavy, but they can save the back of your car in a rear crash as mine did.
I’ll get more camp over cooking videos this year now the weather is getting better.

Tim thanks for the feedback thanks for getting back with me I meant to say front bumper instead of the rear bumper I was talking about your front bumper I'm not sure if you're from the USA or from another country but here in the USA if you can look it up online look up ARB front Summit bumper it's identical to the bumper you have on the front of your vehicle do you not like your bumper would you take it off why is it bother you because it's so heavy could you explain thanks Tim I'm asking these questions cuz I'm debating if I should get one for my truck or not
@@PeteAspesi ahh , the front bar not the rear bar.
Bull bars are handy to mount accessories like driving lights, winch, aerials etc. plus they provide a lot of protection if in an accident or an animal strike.
The bar on the front of my Patrol is made of steel.
It’s heavy.
I am contemplating replacing the front bar with an alloy bar.
Alloy bar would be a lot lighter.
I’m down here in Australia mate.
ARB is a popular brand even down here.

Sweet setup, Tim. Nice and simple.
I'm not a fan of built-in rechargeable batteries, so I have standardised on AAs and solar-rechargeable. I have an Arlec 5 watt solar security light and an old tripod for area lighting, a Companion UFO light and a no-name 20 metre/200 LED string of fairy lights for under the awning, a Barebones Mini Edison lantern for the swag, a Dolphin torch that lives in the ute, and an old Coleman CPX D-cell lantern as a backup. The fairy lights work surprisingly well at providing a warm, soft background light and as a added bonus turn themselves on and off.

Mainly run 2 lights - the baseball cap with 4 LRDs under the peak which is great as the peak stops most of the light shinning in other peoples eyes - just wish I could get one with USB rechargeable batteries but the little button batteries last fair while. The other light is a USB rechargeable LED batwing,- find I only mainly use one side so have some yellow plastic film which I put over the LEDs so as not to attract the bugs, - also pretty easy to string the batwing up in a tree if more light needed and it lasts all night

Nice setup Tim. I’ve got a small LED fitted into the rear door of my 200 from a legend of a bloke here in Perth, puts out plenty of light in the back with the tailgate down. I’ve got a $50 12v Rovin strip light (white and amber) that I used to suspend under my awning with light bungee cord and cheap alum carabiners to hook on at the top of poles. Recently purchased a USB rechargeable Biolite AlpenLite lantern which is pretty good, again a cheap alum carabiner and some strategically drilled holes on my awning arms gives me plenty of places to hang it out if the way. And I use a AA battery head torch, but I’d get a USB one next time. Last big trip was 12 days through the eastern Pilbara and I didn’t get the strip light out once.
100% agree about not enjoying stadium lighting at camp, much prefer focussed task lighting and then no or low light when sitting around the fire. Although two weeks ago, on the Holland Track, my mate Denis’ white strip light managed to attract all the massive flying kamikaze cockroaches (the Devil’s Spawn) away from the campfire and the backs of our heads 😂. Yeah I have way less than that although I always seem to take way more than I ever use.
I have no fixed lights in the vehicle and use a bit of a mix of other things.
I have a mega Led Lenser head torch, that I call the lighthouse, which I use around camp and a couple of cheap LED lights that I run off a 20k mah battery banks that I have that I charge phones with as well.
Just plug them into the vehicle when we're out and about and they never seem to go flat.
I use Makita chordless tools and have as many batteries as the average tradie.................sad but true.
I use them to run a Makita Lantern, which is awesome, a mini chainsaw, torch and I have an adapter to USB so I can run lights or charge stuff off them as well. As you say the batteries last forever.
They do a 12v charger but it's pretty pricey and I never seem to flatten batteries anyway.
Even with only those lights I only ever seem to really use one of my head torches and occasionally hang up the USB lights which are just bright enough to see over a fairly large area.
I like to have dual uses for things so I can use this stuff at home as well.
Most of the time a campfire gives plenty of light.

Good setup mate. I have 2 spotties on the front. I have 2 small thin side lights on the wedgetail rack. Individually switched for left and right. Milwaukee head torch that i use at work. Thats it.

Thats unreal.
I didn't think anyone else would use that same torch that i have.

I’m usually the only one at camp out of two or three other families who has lights, so I carry lots of head torches and general lights for everyone :) I love the magnetic little Hardkorr lights that come in a pack of four with a charging cable that can charge them all at the same time. You can hang them off branches or attach them to kids running around so you can see where they’ve got to at night. Just have to remember to get them back in the morning or remember where you left them. On a positive note the magnet is so strong you can drive all the way home and find them still stuck to the side of the car when you do forget and drive off leaving them there 😂

Yeah, I bet you’re not the only the would get home after a camping trip and still find lights stuck on the sides of their 4wd. Lol.

Head torch, two or three hand torches, led striplight under the awning that can either connect to my auxiliary battery or to a 12volt socket. All torches are rechargable, i don't like having to try and find batteries when I don't need to. The rear of my patrol is still rather standard.

I've got a couple of those rechargeable bug zapper led lights from Jaycar. Inside the camper we have couple of those strips semi permanently installed, that's it.....everything must have multiple uses approach.
