    I’m on the other end of the state so we’re getting our rain today. Yesterday I prepped an extension to my direct seeded flower patch and sowed a bunch of poppies and other flowers, in anticipation of the free and easy watering. Can’t wait! I also sprinkled poppy seeds months ago and the tiny seedlings are doing great.

    Inspired to cut a lilac branch to try forcing! Also, my favorite amaryllis this year was a total shock. I expected red lions in the wax bulbs but it was something else, deeper, whiter tips, compact. Richer. After two full bloom stalks with 4-6 flowers each, I peeled them, rooted them in water and... THEY EACH BLOOMED TWO MORE TIMES, deep velvety red, not orangish at all, with a dark center. I had to find out the type so I contacted Bloomaker with a picture. They are Anne Seaton! I can't recommend them enough, so vigorous and such a perfect red. They started blooming before Christmas and they are still going and probably won't be done until mid March! I wish I could show you a picture. The website does not do this variety justice. Everyone should have this variety for Christmas! And for months afterwards :)

    Danielle, I am so frustrated and disappointed. For three years in a row, I have tried to grow ranunculus. I planted mine this year on the same day as you. I did everything just as you said. In the past, they have sprouted and had good roots, but I lost them later. This time, they haven't even sprouted! They have rotted. I think the soil was too damp for the cool conditions. I've had them in light now for 9 days, nothing. Any suggestions? Even though it is late in the season now to sprout them, I guess I will buy more locally if possible, and try again.

    • @lesliebehrens7252
      @lesliebehrens7252 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Don’t give up. Ordinarily cold and wet is a “recipe for rot.” Trying to sprout them is a tight wire act until you get the feel of it. Sometimes gaging the moisture by weight is more helpful than feeling with fingers. Make two trays of soil mix and leave one entirely dry. Pick each one up and put it down. When in the ground you can use an inexpensive soil probe about 14 inches long. I bought mine on Amazon. Hope this helps🪴

    • @NorthlawnFlowerFarmandGardens
      @NorthlawnFlowerFarmandGardens  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi friend! If the corms are rotting I would suspect that the soil is too moist. No sprouting at all would generally mean the soil is dry. I would describe the ideal soil as - just moist - or very lightly moistened at all times. Perhaps it's the soil type also. Do you mind sharing what kind of potting soil you are using? You can also pre-sprout in lightly moistened vermiculite.

    • @bestsun
      @bestsun 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Wow! I love this! You answered me. Well, Danielle. I had just discovered the rotting the same morning I wrote the note to you. Since then, I pretty much decided it was the "type" of soil. I've noticed that the potting soil bought at Ace Potter's Hardware was just too wet right out of the bag. I've used another bag of it since the corm discovery. It is terrible stuff! I never watered it, and it is just as wet now as it was 3 weeks ago! I bought it in late January before two other sources had gotten their soil shipments in for this year. Yet another horticultural variable to consider which I knew instinctively but didn't let it register in my conscious mind. I was desperate for potting soil, haha! You are spot on in your assessment and I thank you so much. I won't give up. I've taken to heart the points you have made as well as those made by @lesliebehrens7252 in her reply above. By the way, I started following you about three years ago and you are my "go to" girl, right up there with Gardener's World. I really love you and your show. Keep up the great work!@@NorthlawnFlowerFarmandGardens

      Thanks for sharing your knowledge, suggestions and moral support. This is a great idea! And you've taught me something I didn't know about which is the soil probe. I've got a lot to learn, and I won't give up on this ranunculus project. I shopped for new corms yesterday locally to no avail so I will have to order online. I know it is late, but I'm still going to give it a try. Again, thanks for taking time to write.@@lesliebehrens7252

    This video is so helpful and timely as I'm looking to force tulips, sow poppies, and plant out ranunculus. Is your raised bed soil workable in Pennsylvania? I'm in Massachusetts and my ground is too frozen to plant into and I'm getting concerned as my ranunculus are already large and I'm afraid I'll damage them if I try to hold them over much longer. I have row covers but the soil just isn't workable.

    • @NorthlawnFlowerFarmandGardens
      @NorthlawnFlowerFarmandGardens  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi friend! It’s workable here. Do you think you could cover the area with a tarp or row cover and warm it up?

    • @lindajones9191
      @lindajones9191 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @NorthlawnFlowerFarm I have an in ground bed covered with a tarp and it, like a couple of my raised beds that are uncovered are frozen solid. I was thinking of creating a couple of new raised beds with fresh soil, planting into those and then covering them with frost cloth and possibly some greenhouse plastic as I have the hoops and materials. I'm just wondering if that would be enough as the forecast for the next few weeks show most nights in the 20's and some in the teens. I should have started them later but I'd like to try to see these through to blooming as I have a lot of them.
