Thanks for the great videos. Done this a few times on my ZX-14 but always swiveled the engine down on one of the rear mounts which can't be done here because of the shift drive. I really wanted to remind myself of how much room or how little room I would have to do this on the Concours. Thanks again for documenting everything.

Thanks for watching and commenting. I wouldn’t do that with a C14 even if one could. Engine alignment is a pain in the ass based upon service manual procedure, and it’s pretty important with both sprocket or bevel drive setups.

Thinking about purchasing one of these GTR1400 and wanting to know what I will be getting myself into as I generally do as much work to my bikes as I can. Thank you for taking the time to document this procedure. I see by the tat on your arm you were more than likely in the fire service. I currently have twenty-five years in and have approximately a year and half to go before I call it quits. I don't know where you live, but I live in Florida, and like you, I'm getting old and the garage is miserable in the summer.

2957 here, thanks for the great video. You are still helping people even after your time in the service.

@@MotoRestoFL One last question regarding this valve clearance check procedure that I thought about. You stated in the video about having all kinds of cam chain noise when your done for a short time because the hydraulic cam chain tensioner will be unscrewed/backed off by the service person. What if the service provider counted the amount of turns on the adjustment screw when backing off tension and then when the service is done, screwing the adjuster back in the same amount of turns before starting the engine; this way maybe there will not be as much noise/slack in the chain for an extended amount of time? What are your thoughts?

@@lickitysplit2413 I think you may have misunderstood, there is no adjustment screw the tensioner gets “cocked” and locked for install and it self releases then it is what it is. I did a video on cam chain startup noise separate from the valve clearance series which I show the tensioner and explain that. Yes after reinstalling the tensioner it may rattle a bit more that normal but really, it’s normal for the rattle when the bikes been sitting anyway, so hope that clears that up.

I Googled the " doughnut " clearance, and it said 12. So i went to Drunkin Doughnuts and said i want a 12 spec, and they sold me an even Dozen :)

I’m not allowed to eat doughnuts, too much sugar makes me say dumb stuff on camera. Whoops, too late! 🙄

Hi, Thank you for making these videos it's a huge help. I recently picked up a high miles 2015 Concours 14 in non running condition. Clutch is super hard to press and when shift from neutral to 1st gear it shuts off. Is there anyway I can email you for help? I don't know much about these machines but highly eager to learn. Best regards, Khan

Maybe I missed it, But what symptoms do you see, from them being out of spec? I'm coming up on 100k miles and the last check was done at 26k miles. But I have no problems or lack of power or issues revving or anything out of the ordinary. Hasn't had anything but oil changes, tires, brakes since 26k miles.

No symptoms. Just maintenance. Ran a lot stronger afterwards, but probably because of the throttle body synchronization I did while doing the valve adjustment (not shown on camera, it's impossible to see). The valves weren't out that far to cause a bump in performance, but synching the TB's sure would if they were off. There's no guarantee the factory sets them correctly anyway. Cheers.

I have one of these bikes and watching this is swaying me to sell it before valve check serving is required. I see a $1000.00 service charge

That's about average from what I've heard. My quote to customers is $900-$1,200 range depending on circumstances. Every engine is unique as to possibilities of frozen bolts, broken bolts, customization and extras like crash bars that need to be removed/reinstalled (like mine), all sorts of variables come into play. So yes, you're suggestion of a $1K charge for this is accurate. Plus, parts are getting somewhat hard to find and obtain thanks to our government and the move to try and eradicate all ICE vehicles from the planet. I am going to keep a kit of soft-parts in stock for this job at all times, I have one now awaiting a possible valve adjust job in the future.
So yea, if you follow the maintenance thing to the letter, it's expensive. That said, keep in mind, there's plenty of folks who put very high miles on these engines without cracking the head cover open one time, and there's no issues. I've actually never heard of a C14 engine detonating due to a lack of valve train maintenance. Frankly, one doesn't hear about them detonating for any reason. Any performance engine will very likely have a flat-tappet cam system with shims under bucket, they're just more hearty than the rocker/stem/nut setup and better suited for higher RPM. So, with any bigger performance in-line four engine, you're gonna have this. You can certainly find another ride with easier access for service, that's for sure. But will it have the hard-hitting whack-on throttle of the C14? Probably not, especially if it has luggage. Anyway, thanks for watching and commenting.
