Why do you think the Lab Scientist has a Shark in his pool? Keep up to date with me here! Twitter - twitter.com/Hyrule_101 Instagram - instagram.com/hyrule_gamer_/
There are in fact, fresh water sharks. A few people here in the US, found that out the hard way, when children were eaten. So, it IS possible it came from the river that runs through the gerudo valley. Also, canonically, hyrule is surrounded by oceans. And since we have never had access to the entire Hylian continent, it is still possible to be there. Perhaps, the scientist captured/found it when it was younger and has since kept it. As for why? Perhaps it has to do with the unique properties of lake hylia and its water.
Maybe the shark is for examination. He might want to figure out how to make them more peaceful. It's possible that the Royal family actually shipped it to them to make hyrule beaches safer.
I feel it's a stuffed shark, and the old man just likes to scare anyone willing to dive down. Think about it, it doesn't look alive in the least, it doesn't move. not even a slight animation. That thing was alive once, but now is just a stuffed and preserved shark.
Old scientist is clearly experimenting on saltwater creatures, and the large pool seems designed for sharks - though not many at a time. Shark at the bottom of the pool is a decoy; something he brings out so that newcomers don't feel lonely.
Pretty sure that it's actually a flat image (like a literal photo), that's why it doesn't move. It's like putting an image behind a curtain so when someone opens it they get scared. But that being said, I think the stuffed shark idea has more weight than speculating it's a pet based on speculative criteria.
All the weapons and boats and stuff in his room are just props that he kept as souvenirs from movies he’s directed. Or stared in. He could be a famous actor.
The Lakeside Laboratory looks like something that should've also appeared in Breath of the Wild somewhere in the beach. Maybe it's the fact that Lon Lon Ranch and the lab are notable places in Ocarina of Time.

I know why you can't swim in BotW, because BotW takes after the 3 split timeline, at the triumphant-adult timeline, the events of the great sea happened before WW(Wind Waker), and the hero of winds can swim, but not underwater, and he has a circle that indicates his breath, if it's depleted, Link, the hero of winds, will drown unless he reaches ashore.
Not being able to swim was one of the few parts of the game I was disappointed with, especially when the Zora Armor is involved. I wonder if we can see a new type of Zora, kinda like the Oracle games, because idk how the descendants looked the way they did precisely. We could theorize how some River and Sea Zora mingled in some way down the line, but the River genes are either aren't dominant or were possibly passed on less frequently, but enough to be prominent in the form of sharp teeth or somethings. Oh the joys of theories~!

I used to think that there was a secret tunnel that lead to the lab. The shark found that tunnel but there is a gate keeping him from going further. And the scientist does not o ow it’s there waiting for someone to come down and discover him.
I always love these little fun theories compared to other theorists’ theories. And I agree with that it could just be a pet. A poorly cared for and stolen one, but still a pet.

"We know the shark lives at the very bottom of the diving pool" Nah son if that's a great white Shark it ain't living. Even if there was a larger chamber beyond there Sharks need a LOT of space to physically be able to breath, They are a massively migratory species and to remain content they need to be allowed to migrate or they'll get depressed and stop eating along with potentially hurting themselves, Not only that but a depressed Shark is a SEVERLY aggressive shark. I know that shark is just a graphic, but the fact that it's not moving or reacting to Link when under whatever duress it MUST be under then the only answer is that is the corpse of a shark. Knowing what I know about Sharks I think it is far more likely that the Shark is the remains of a shark being used in an experiment, perhaps on decomposition?
I agree. As soon as I heard him start to theorize all I could think about was the documentaries I'd seen that explained how every time zoos tried to put sharks in aquariums, no matter how big they were the sharks would die very quickly because they simply need THAT much space to be able to live and breathe normally. On top of that, even tho originally on the N64 the shark appeared as just a 2D graphic, it would probably not have taken much to create a 3D shark and give it simple animation if they really wanted us to know it was alive..................... I firmly believe it was a 2D graphic put there as a jump-scare joke by the developers, but if we're thinking outside that box then the shark MUST be a dead shark. In the 3D remake it looks like they took the time to make the shark 3D instead, and they STILL didn't bother to program any movement for it............so if it's a "real" shark, then it's a dead shark. It makes sense that it might be one of the wacky doctor's experiments, perhaps a failed experiment that was disposed of there? Definitely creepy.
What if this scientist's work is much deeper and darker than we think... He lives near the Zora Domain, surrounded by a rich diversity of aquatic life, as we can see in his laboratory. Yet, we never see him having any particular relationship with any Zora ever (except in Majora's Mask, but I'm not going in that direction). What if he has a ultimate goal, through years of testing and collecting different aquatic living creatures to, eventually, CREATE a new people? Remember how the Zoras in Breath of the Wild have different features corresponding to particular fish? Why would some of them have such particular physical caracteristics? If we, for the sake of this theory, put Breath of the Wild at the end of the adult timeline, what if this scientist made some secret experiments with the Zoras to give them fish property that would, eventually, save them from the great flood in Wind Waker? Maybe his mad plans would've saved the race in the end, allowing them to live underwater and also mate with proper fish, which would then explain the caracteristics of the Zoras in BotW. A mad scientist doing crazy experiments to living things only to allow them to eventually survive later in the series. What if Sidon is a descendant of that white shark?! As always good video and nice theory ;) I've been studying and analysing books and movies for years at my university, I LOVE going too deep into such small details! Keep up the good work HG! :)
Taking this seriously, I feel you're missing how much of history involved rich people having "pets" that were not treated well, and kept on small areas. The old London Zoo was filled with gifts and kept in tiny cages during the Victorian era, for a modern example. I can easily imagine this guy finding a small shark (maybe a young one that could swim up river), deciding it was cool, and yoinking it. Fun fact: female great whites are on the smaller size just over a half meter (~2 feet) larger than the biggest males. Dude got a lady shark.
His map on the wall is curious. It looks like a layout of Lake Hylia, but the Water Temple for some reason is marked as the Triforce. Did he draw it himself, or did he find it out on the sea on one of his expeditions? Why mark the temple as the Triforce? Did Ganondorf show up to investigate the map, and that lead him to discovering the temple and corrupting it? What if the scientist found the map and moved his research there in hopes of unlocking the temple to obtain the Triforce? Is that why he is conducting experiments? So many questions.
The Triforce mark at the location of the Water Temple may just be referencing the temple's important connection with the Triforce and the Sacred Realm. It's totally plausible that Ganondorf happened upon that map and used it to locate the Water Temple. However, I'm inclined to see it more as an easter egg for the adventurer keenly looking over the walls of the place. I'm curious to know if this map only exists in the 3D remake or if it's in the N64 version as well. And again, I ask the void.............WHAT is with those claw marks on the tree above the Water Temple?!?!?!!! I hate that we don't have a plausible answer to that question q____q
If Im not mistaken, white sharks cannot handle being locked up, and need to always swim in order for them to breath, even though Im not certain if that is the shark specie, is very likely dead.
Maybe but there wasn't really anything Jaws-esque about the shark or the way it acts imo... sure Jaws is mostly about a great white shark but not one that is stationary, enclosed in bars. Perhaps it's a reference considering the scientist does keep his home full of dead sea organisms similarly to Quint from Jaws, but the shark itself doesn't really remind me of any scene from the movie. Plus the zora resemble sharks anyway so maybe more realistic sharks like tigers, bulls and hammerheads live nearby Zora's Domain. I'm diving, like a shark, really deep into this...
Here’s my theory: Since he transported it, he wants to study it. In this time period or world or whatever, sharks are probably not well known and this would have been a great thing to study. The bars can open up so the shark can swim in the bigger tank for better study, and when he’s using the bigger tank to test people’s diving skill, the added scare for the diver add some extra data points and fun for the scientist ( he is mad). The shark is always at the bars, because he thinks link looks tasty. Also because this iMaGiNaTiOn anyway, that little chamber is deep and goes to another chamber with lots of shark friends and room to swim. PS, someone had a really good theory relating to using Gameshark cheat codes somewhere here in the comments, give them a read and a like! Now back to some productive stuff, how did I get here...
Maybe it’s a tunnel that acts as a transport between the ocean and/or zora’s domain, and a shark happened to swim up to the gate since it looks openable and closeable
Nice theory. The only problem I see is that Great Whites cannot live in captivity. Maybe the shark's cage is just a tunnel leading to a body of freshwater. Lake Hylia might even be a saltwater lake.
Considering that shark can't move, which is a requirement for them to breathe, that shark isn't "living" at the bottom of that pool. Large sharks like great whites do not do well in captivity. They need such huge amounts of space, they tend to die because aquariums just can't provide it.
The only issue is... Sharks need to keep moving to breath, probably an oversight by the devs who didn't know that, though that shark is most definitely dead.
You’ve played it 27 times oh I’ve played it 26 times even after you complete it it’s still really fun to play again😂🤣😂😅 you can play it like 50 times without getting bored of it😂😅
Perhaps Hyrule has lax pet laws? It is a medieval kingdom after all, back then you could keep anything as long as it didn’t eat anyone. Maybe there is a hidden underground aquarium that only the scientist can access, but anyone who is brave enough can visit the shark by looking into the tank at the bottom of the diving pool.
Hey, not to fuel more crack theories... but this game did talk about the fact that IRL bunnies did exist and became extinct. Maybe he's trying to reserve the shark since it might be from a time long ago where Hyrule had animals of our world.
the mad scientist is crazy about fish food. here is explained the shark, the shark soup is a delicious dish for the Japanese and the Orientals in general. and in order not to harm the sensitivity of anyone, nintendo has inserted it in the form of an inoffensive easter egg. the whole zelda saga is chock full of references to oriental culture and symbolism
Bull sharks can live in fresh water and have been swimming up like 100 miles up rivers like the amazon but that does look way more like a GWS. There could be a water flow like they have in hydroelectric dams that the scientist is using to power or run some equiptment or the shop itself and he just channels it through the shark habitat but that would also be decreasing the salinity of the shark water assuming the flow would be coming from the lake which would most likely be fresh water... Unless all the water in the game is salt water or at least brackish to some extent... But since he is a scientist maybe he has some kind of regulator that maintains a safe level of salt similar to how saltwater pools measure salt levels
Yeah I was reading that Bull Sharks can live in fresh water, I wanted to say it is a Bull Shark but it just looked a lot more like a Great White Shark. That's true, he likely had some sort of system or mechanic to keep it alive :)
I was just thinking about this theory before and thought of my own. Since this is a diving pool after all, what if the scientist was trying to recreate the Zora scales that allow link to dive deep and stay underwater. He might have the shark to gather it’s skin in order to create a device to dive and stay underwater. He must have got this idea since the Zora’s designs are based off of sharks, especially seen in Breath of the Wild. The scientist is also impressed and gives Link a heart piece if he stays underwater for long enough, something only possible with a Zora scale, which Link has. I just though of this theory when I replayed OoT recently and saw the shark again. Thanks for reading.
Although I can accept things like this as "easter eggs" or "scares made by the developers", I gotta admit, I prefer in-game world explanations on topics like this one. Fun fact! You can actually open the shark cage and touch the shark! It doesn't have any animations or anything, but Link takes damage due to him being a total dipshit and poking the shark.
My original theory was that he made the tank with a tunnel as a trap to catch Octorok and other creatures that swam in directly from the lake connecting to him. He notices less and less creatures swimming in to the pool for him to study, he goes to investigate the lake and the big shark is killing all his test subjects/food! A big Jaws fight/chase ensues and he traps the shark in the tunnel, blocking off the entrance to the pool so he can still use it while also keeping it away from him and the lake. I also assumed the shark was dead and preserved like Rosie the Shark
I'm glad I'm not the only person who never had problems with water areas. Back in the day in Ocarina of Time, I actually liked sitting around and fishing. It was so relaxing. I also liked playing Wind Waker because I liked sailing the sea. I heard they made it a bit easier in the remake, though.
theoretically it could be a bull shark. They can survive and thrive in fresh water, don't require too much space, and have been reported to swim from the Gulf of Mexico to lake Michigan so if the river connects to the ocean it could have made it to lake Hylia and that is where he caught it
That scientist was also closely related to the Zora in Majoras Mask, maybe he had something to do with the Zora developing shark like features in botw. Maybe he was working on splicing their genes or something, he definitely gives off mad scientist vibes
Hylia is on top of where Racoon City used to be. The shark experiment from the first game survived in Lake Hylia because it was far enough underground to survibe and the testing scientists did let it live in fresh water. The Lake Scientist was one of the scientists who worked on the shark back then and is alive because he found a way to use the virus to extend his life with minimal side effects which is why he looks so messed up.
I'm here because I was watching a boundary break video and there it mentioned a "shark" in Lake Hylia. I was surprised because I don't remember noticing the shark being there in my playthrough. Seeing it now, that's a scary lil' guy.
He is going to eat the shark Also, who is to say that having a shark is illegal in Hyrule? He is keeping an octorok in a very tiny tank out in the open
i love how there are some people who are able to theorise and prove the potential of their theories and there are others who are like "devs probably put it in cause they thought it looked cool"
I think the scientist is working on making hostile creatures into pets, but has only managed to make them lethargic. We see that the octorok doesn't move at all unlike their wild counterparts, and so does the shark. I think his process to do so is to leave the creatures on a confined place for long periods of time, alongside with several types of potions. He can release the shark on the bigger tank to see how it reacts, using the nearby cage for diving himself safely, but he only does this when he knows people aren't going to come inside and accidentally jump into his pool. It is an illegal and unethical experiment, and it probably has a flawed premise, but he thinks he has some merit and no one has come to bother him all the way in lake hylia, so he continues with it.
That shark scared me so bad I had to force myself to dive to get the heart piece (can I get a 'what what' from my fellow completionists?) and never thought about why it might be there. Between this and the eel from Super Mario 64, it's a wonder I didn't develop hydrophobia
I always thought it was a cheeky nod to nintendo's dislike for game modifiers/cheat devices. So they took a shark, like a gameshark and put it in a cage.
I'm so happy I Hadent played this when I was a kid, when I would travel a lot, visit hotels, and there pools... I would have never gone close to one of them after seeing that
When you mentioned the saw, harpoons/spears, and boat, my first thought was the teacher in Windwaker who teaches Link different sword techniques. That would also give him a connection to the shark (if I remember right). I know this vid is old but I thought I’d share my thoughts anyway
I mean, Link wanted to eat an Octorock in the CD-I games, so I don't see why the scientist couldn't either. Also, I'm sure that people have eaten sharks at some point in history (assuming people don't eat them now), so maybe the shark and the Octorock are more dishes that he was planning on having until he could get some eyeball frogs
Why do you think the Lab Scientist has a Shark in his pool?

Interesting thoughts :)
Thanks a lot!
So you are saying ruto married that shark ?
What if it's a model to scare anyone that dives deep enough so the old man doesn't have to give them a prize for reaching the bottom?
That's a good one
Maybe
The other day in BOTW I had realized I had missed a stable because I had found a random one and the shrine wasn’t activated-
*that was nice*
That's a big oof
Hyrule Gamer
Yup. 😂😅
What’s wrong with missing a stable?
Hamza the great
I had sworn I got them all 😂
Which one was it?
Taking this seriously, I feel you're missing how much of history involved rich people having "pets" that were not treated well, and kept on small areas. The old London Zoo was filled with gifts and kept in tiny cages during the Victorian era, for a modern example.
I can easily imagine this guy finding a small shark (maybe a young one that could swim up river), deciding it was cool, and yoinking it.
Fun fact: female great whites are on the smaller size just over a half meter (~2 feet) larger than the biggest males. Dude got a lady shark.
That intro just sadly reminds me how the weakest part of BotW was the water activities.
Aww :(
@@HyruleGamer it looks like I'm not the only one who wants to see it return in number 2. I just hope there's little to no cave diving.
Divine Beasts: allow me to make an entrance!
Clearly the shark committed shcrimes (shark crimes) and had to go to schjail (shark jail)
I think you are onto something :)
Lol
Everyone talks about the Shark, but no one talks about how Lord Helix makes an appearance in Legend of Zelda
Wait what
Who, what, where?
Lord helix from Pokémon?
He showed us an octorock in the teaser, but we get SHARKS?? I feel cheated...
Oh, my bad lol
If Im not mistaken, white sharks cannot handle being locked up, and need to always swim in order for them to breath, even though Im not certain if that is the shark specie, is very likely dead.
Then there's me. I always thought it was dead.
Could be, who knows
True, I mean if it was an illegal Shark, then the scientist might of had to get rid of the evidence.
I think it was a nod to the movie Jaws.
Maybe yeah!
I read this as "I think it was a nod to the moving jews". I'm very sorry for this.
Doctor Mizumi is one of my favorite NPCs in OoT! Glad he's getting brought up as more than just a creepy face.
Is that his name? If so cool! :D
@@HyruleGamer It's the name he was given in the manga, but it pretty much just translates to "Lake Doctor". Well, "Doctor Cool-Water", but also Lake.

There's a SHARK in oot?! I NEVER saw that thing
Yeah haha
Yeah i never noticed it either
Come on, you must be joking.
Here’s my theory:
Since he transported it, he wants to study it.
My theory is that the scientist could be a pirate or a fossil collector.
Maybe an ex-pirate?
I love these smaller theories that don’t change the entire series.
Glad you enjoyed :)
"I have no doubt he would eat an Octorok as well."
My Scottish brother, that was the perfect opportunity for a Wand of Gamelon reference, lol.
Yeah I missed it haha
Maybe it’s a tunnel that acts as a transport between the ocean and/or zora’s domain, and a shark happened to swim up to the gate since it looks openable and closeable
Very possible :)
If the developers put it in the game to scare people it 100% worked on me as a kid, that shark really freaked me out as a kid!
I can imagine haha
Nice theory. The only problem I see is that Great Whites cannot live in captivity. Maybe the shark's cage is just a tunnel leading to a body of freshwater. Lake Hylia might even be a saltwater lake.
Yeah
Wow, you were talking how he might eat an octorock and you didn't even pull up the CDI Link scene! and you call yourself a zelda fan...

Considering that shark can't move, which is a requirement for them to breathe, that shark isn't "living" at the bottom of that pool.
Large sharks like great whites do not do well in captivity. They need such huge amounts of space, they tend to die because aquariums just can't provide it.
i’m playing through oot right now, and i never noticed the shark! time to head to lake hylia lmao
Lol
The only issue is...
Sharks need to keep moving to breath, probably an oversight by the devs who didn't know that, though that shark is most definitely dead.
That's where the slack of being a video game comes into this haha
There was a shark in there I've beaten ocarina of time 27 times how did I miss that?😵
It is fairly easy to miss I suppose :)
Maybe yeah :)
I love the Nintendoblackcrisis reference😂
Yesssss :D
No god please no
He is just wondering about and doesn’t understand why there is a giant measuring instrument. That’s why he’s just there looking at it.

I always thought that shark had just swam through pipes that brought water into the lab😂
Maybe haha

bad sharks get imprisoned for their crimes
Yeah it can be really enjoyable :)
and really? I did not know that!
How do you open the cage?
My original theory was that he made the tank with a tunnel as a trap to catch Octorok and other creatures that swam in directly from the lake connecting to him. He notices less and less creatures swimming in to the pool for him to study, he goes to investigate the lake and the big shark is killing all his test subjects/food! A big Jaws fight/chase ensues and he traps the shark in the tunnel, blocking off the entrance to the pool so he can still use it while also keeping it away from him and the lake.
I also assumed the shark was dead and preserved like Rosie the Shark
Oot is cool, but Twilight Princess is still my fav

i liked that one part where you showed Zelda's butt. just saying.
You're welcome? lol
theoretically it could be a bull shark. They can survive and thrive in fresh water, don't require too much space, and have been reported to swim from the Gulf of Mexico to lake Michigan so if the river connects to the ocean it could have made it to lake Hylia and that is where he caught it
That is possible but it looks more like a Great White imo
That scientist was also closely related to the Zora in Majoras Mask, maybe he had something to do with the Zora developing shark like features in botw. Maybe he was working on splicing their genes or something, he definitely gives off mad scientist vibes
Others probably have said it already, but what I've heard, it's an Easter Egg for the Gameshark.
Is that actually confirmed anywhere though?
@@HyruleGamer I am not certain. I found a few videos about it, but I'm not sure they're accurate.
I always assumed the shark was dead
Hylia is on top of where Racoon City used to be. The shark experiment from the first game survived in Lake Hylia because it was far enough underground to survibe and the testing scientists did let it live in fresh water. The Lake Scientist was one of the scientists who worked on the shark back then and is alive because he found a way to use the virus to extend his life with minimal side effects which is why he looks so messed up.
OOOH! That “personality” joke, it killed me!
You could say...he was so hungry he could eat an octorok

I'm here because I was watching a boundary break video and there it mentioned a "shark" in Lake Hylia. I was surprised because I don't remember noticing the shark being there in my playthrough. Seeing it now, that's a scary lil' guy.
He is going to eat the shark
Also, who is to say that having a shark is illegal in Hyrule? He is keeping an octorok in a very tiny tank out in the open

Oh snacks and drink? Nah I just starve
Oh
i love how there are some people who are able to theorise and prove the potential of their theories
and there are others who are like "devs probably put it in cause they thought it looked cool"
Lololololol
Between this and the eel from Super Mario 64, it's a wonder I didn't develop hydrophobia
i actually had a snack for this.... a Pop-Tart
I always thought it was a cheeky nod to nintendo's dislike for game modifiers/cheat devices. So they took a shark, like a gameshark and put it in a cage.
Maybe

My god that shark terrified me as a child
Yeah maybe :)
