I am now creating annotated videos for my extra content Patrons, but because this video discusses rather complicated subject matter (which probably made it the most challenging video for me); I decided to make the annotations for this one accessible to everyone. So if there were any parts of this video that you thought were unclear, or if you are interested in some additional information, be sure to check out; ant.umn.edu/fijpchgsex
Cool video, the accent with a couple words you pronounce in a particular way...sounds very very familiar, makes me feel at home! Thank you for the video! This could have helped me a lot about 2 weeks ago, luckily music was my first love and brought me back. Now clearer than ever and finally at peace with myself. Grtz, a no longer wondering Hollander! ;)
Kristopher Mancini for one it got me into cinema, which is a huge part of my life now. Also it introduced me to a new form of narrative when I'm writing. But the movie itself, which I watched many times puts me into some form of meditation, grounds me and stimulates a sort of existential acknowledgement, which inspires me to write unpretentiously and clearly.
I am a big admirer of Malick but it has to be said that Knight of Cups, Song to Song and To the Wonder were all very big disappointments. I can see what he is trying to do but it’s a big ask of the audience to join him on the journey that the characters in these films take. Days of Heaven and Tree of Life as well as his other earlier classics hide the fact that Malick has 3 duds on his CV.
@@davidwebb6793 I don't buy this statement. I don't think the films are duds at all. I think they work on a different level but they do work. They have a transcendental quality that are unique and fascinating. After seeing A Hidden Life, which was excellent, I can see how they've influenced Malick's filmmaking style.
Akin to Carl Jung's process of individuation. The approach to the Self, according to Jung, is a circumambulation. A circling or spiraling towards... the Pearl. As we circle once and once again, the eternal return, we get closer and closer, although never reaching some finite point - the Self is a process, never a destination.
I actually think that movies like this are very necessary right now. I think the message, whether it engaged all viewers or not, is what we need in a world that hands out pleasure and instantaneous gratification seemingly for free. I can't speak for others, but I must admit I struggle to find meaning in day to day life... I have trouble living in the present... I find myself chasing things that I am convinced I want by someone else. Thank you for this analysis of the movie.
When I saw this film today, I knew I had seen something really deep and thought provoking but apart from the general questions it raises on having a purpose in life and feeling the need to find a direction, I couldn't really gather much given the unstructured narrative. But this video opened my mind to a whole new layer of meaning, like all other videos of this channel. Awesome work!
Thank you for making these beautiful essays. I've watched this one at least 5 times already and it's my favorite. Knight of Cups is a movie I like very much too now but I never would've even known about it if it weren't for your channel. This movie is pure art. It conveys emotions I never could to anyone in any way about how I feel, and where I am in life. I hope I make it to the light. I'm tired of this abyss.
i loved your analysis, when i watched this film, many people disliked it, even loathed it, as self indulgent and innacessible, even saying that it was the "New Emperor`s clothes" but i knew deep inside that Malick crafted a big mirror on today`s collective unconscious, at least one from the American way of life that puts meaningless and wandering as its core, how can you like meaningless if you are part of it without knowing, even to the point of denying it? for me it was that. The Search is symbolic and it never ends...
This movie is by far his deepest film. Every one has philosophical questions and answers throughout, but this one is packed with so many you'd have to watch it multiple times to understand in the slightest way. The multitude of different characters and their own views of the world and the Knight of Cups, create a story with endless layers.
This is the third time I've watched this video, and every time I learn something new! Thank you! Thank you very much !! next time put a subtitle of videos
Wow. Again. Your analysis of these powerful films holds potentially greater power than the source material--that is my experience. Thank you again for another brilliant piece of work.
Wow!!! I like a lot of the formal, technical video essays (a la Every Frame a Painting) on TH-cam but a lot of thematic analyses resort to really loose observations and trite/reaching conclusions (especially with a slightly oblique filmmaker like Malick) but this was stunning. Well researched, strongly supported by both the narrative and style of the film, and genuinely enlightening. I can't wait to watch the film again with this new insight. Edit: Oh you did that Moonlight video too! I must've forgotten to subscribe when I saw that because that was great too
Thanks! There's tons more little details and quotes in the film that suggest links with Kierkegaard's philosophy (and existentialism in general) which made rewatching it for this video very interesting to me, hope it does so for you as well :)
This video hit hard. Reminds me of two quotes I have on my wall from Spinoza: "It is in the nature of reason to perceive things in the light of eternity," and "the highest activity a human being can attain is learning for understanding, because to understand is to be free."
Excellent analysis! Thanks for sharing this with us. I didn’t think I could love this movie any more than I did but your video made me want to watch it all over again straight away. Thanks!
Your videos deeply touch me sir; I am certain they make a difference for others as well. Thank you for making them.Thank you for putting in effort while you do so.
The Knight of Cups in Tarot is associated with Sir Galahad {called also the bearer of the cup} as one of the few knights from the Round Table to find the Holy Grail.
Thank you for creating and sharing your content. It is definitely enlightening. Thanks again for taking the time to create it. It’s helpful to me and many others!
I always felt that this movie could be interpreted in more than one way and I'm glad you stated that in your video, specifically when you mention how a movie like "Knight of Cups" needs to be explored in more detail. I appreciate it.
I disagree with your take on the ending. The way I see it, the film has been demonstrating aimlessness the entire time, and at the end tries to break out of that world by addressing the audience directly, telling us not to repeat the mistakes we just saw but to live up to our potential. The film opens with a tale about a prince who fell asleep, and it concludes by telling us that we, as that prince, should wake up. A little cheesy, but I do believe that's what Malick meant by it.
Pope Innocent III Looking for the pearl....you go thru your trails and tribulations. After many times you beg God to end your suffering, till one day you realize....you have become the very pearl you were looking for....
After stumbling upon this essay, I think this deserves a rewatch. Having The New World, Tree of Life and The Thin Red Line as a few of my favorite films of all time, I remember feeling a bit lost and frustrated with this one. I was familiar with Malick, but somehow I couldn't get myself on his frequency here. Maybe I was too restless and not comfortable enough.
Excellent work on these videos-found your channel from One Big Soul and watched everything, really great videos! I would love to see video essays on To the Wonder and Song to Song!
Thanks a lot for this enlightening approach of one of my favorites. Such clever perspectives and in deep analysis that elevates the discussion is more than welcome in those times of oversimplification. Keep up the great stuff, greetings and salutations from France.
I viewed this film from a perspective that a relative few could view it. Many of the scenes were shot on the lots of major studios in the Hollywood System. It is a system in which I worked for 30 years, a system that I have been retired from for 12 years now. One of the scenes was shot mere steps from the spot on the Warner Bros. backlot, where I made the decision to retire, still 6 months out from the time I could retire with a minimum pension. That place where I experienced a recurring theme in my life, that of the power of intentionally letting go of situations that have become oppressive to me. For example, to push past the fear of losing my job by intentionally giving the job up, setting my life on a completely different trajectory, far more fulfilling than remaining in the situation out of fear. The Tarot card that I identify with as a life strategy is the Hanged Man - who has a beatific glow around his head since he put himself in that position. I understand it signifies the power of taking that which you are struggling with and casting it to the ground, and walking away. The Tao Te Ching says that when we gain, we lose. When we lose, we gain. The latter being even more powerful when the loss is intentional rather than involuntary. It caused me to do the miraculous and unthinkable thing of retiring at the age of 54. My coworkers continued on with the Hollywood death march, some of which are probably still working and lamenting that if they don't work 80 hours this week, they won't be able to crack their monthly nut...
But on another side... Thank you... Really THANK YOU... for everyone who works in this industry so we can watch beautiful movies. We all sacrifice somewhere... sometimes without rewards.
