  • Guitar mic'd separate with an SM57 for high quality comparison!
    In depth discussion, comparison and review of three similar phaser pedals on three different guitars.
    We look at the MXR Phase 90 CSP101 Script 74 but with LED, Phase 90 block m101, and my favorite hidden gem, the DOD 201 vintage Phasor (not a typo).
    We use three different guitars. A Stratocaster with custom shop 69 pickups (The Abigail Ybarra ones), a Les Paul with Burstbuckers and an Epiphone Casino with p90.
    First we go over why we are even looking at these three, where to find them and last, what they are gonna cost. All three of these can be easily found used sine they are pretty common.

    Hey everyone thanks for watching. Like many people, I'm trying to make the best of things being stuck at home unable to get our there and work during Covid19.
    It would mean the world to me if you would subscribe so, I can try to monetize my channel.
    Every little bit helps right now! Thanks and peace to all!

      Thank you for stopping me from spending $45 on the DOD phasor! I was just about to do it, but I prefer the Script MXR and don't really NEED a phaser. I subscribed, but you only have 296 subscribers... BUT imagine if you wrote a great album and then presented outtakes of it track by track on your channel and then charged $10 to purchase the album? if it was really good and 100 of those people purchased this month that'd be $1,000... though I the younger generation no longer values music enough to pay for it since it has always been free streaming (maybe your guitar playing subscribers are the older generation). Oh wait, no one has money to spend on anything and that's the whole problem isn't it? Crap!
      Anyway, good luck and stay safe! Thanks for saving me $45!

    i have the block font Phase 90, and I bought it because I use phaser sparingly, meaning I usually turn it on for short bursts, then off. The main difference I found between the block and the script was that the block spews out a lot of white whooshy noise, and the script runs a lot quieter. If you want a noisy phaser, then the block is the one for you. If you want a quiet phaser, the script is a better choice.

    201 got that vibe pulse being a 2 stage, with a very transperant result . Mxrs being 4 stage, have more of an even but thickker sweep and with coloration for "that" phase 90 sound. Having both I noticed the 201 to be to subtle when SUPER clean but comes alive with a little crunch. The mxr coloration makes it seem bit more noticeable espiaclly in the mix. U can take more of the 201 over time it's more natural but almost too subtle but u can leave it on, where as the mxr it might get obnoxious over a whole song , both awsome tho, almost two different effects

    Only difference between the block logo and script logo MXRs is that the block logo has an extra feedback loop in the circuit to add extra resonance to the phasing sound. My understanding is that you can open it up and clip the connection for that feedback loop and basically have a 'script logo' MXR. I've also seen where you can adjust the 'phase points' on the circuit board and give the phaser an almost-Univibe sound.

    The DOD is the most transparent of the three, retaining your guitar's low end especially well. Put it in front of high gain and it makes your tone deliciously chewy and thick. MXR phasers bump the midrange and have more a cutting sweep, which is great for soloing in a band context.

    The DOD 201 has been my favorite phaser (phasor) since the 1980s. It’s the most Uni-Vibey of the various phaser pedals I’ve owned. The reissue from 2013 or so is great, pretty much identical to the oldies. I also really like EHX’s Small Stone (mine is a mid-‘90s Russian version). The DOD is great for rhythm playing, where you don’t want your guitar to piss all over everything else. Of the MXR phasers the 45 is my fav, followed by the script 90. The block 90’s feedback loop makes it too overbearing IMO. Allow controlling the feedback amount with a small pot & it’d be more useful.

  • @gobeco
    @gobeco ปีที่แล้ว +1

    +1 for the subtle DOD 201, the best phaser for chords and arpegios. Always on and it makes me no hear fatigue like the others 4, 6, 8 and 12 stage. I sold mt TC XII phaser cause even on lead guitar it is too much for my taste. I keept my 70s EHX Small Stone for some leads only.
    I dont want increase my GAS and buy more phasers but to anyone that will buy I would go for the more versatile MXR Phase 95 (2 & 4 Stage).

    Mxr changes the sound drastically since it shifts 90 degrees. Dod is just 45. I'll go for block for massive distorted swirl effects, script for wobbly screaming lead and Dod for almost everything under the sun including echoplex sounding clean.

  • @MrScary-dp6oe

    In all fairness, you should've compared the MXR Phase 90 vs. DOD 401. The DOD 201 is equal with MXR Phase 45.

    • @BuddycatAFK
      @BuddycatAFK  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      For sure! Fair points. I just started out planning to compare block with script and decided to throw in a 3rd option since they are not too expensive for vintage and easy to come by - that and I it’s what I had 😄

      @@BuddycatAFK, understood.. thanks for sharing the video.. I have the old DOD 490 and it's incredible. The swoosh is so much more defined than my Boss PH-1r. The old school DOD phasers/phasors from the 70's and early 80's are top of the line. MXR's are good too, but I think EVH made them famous so there really never was a genuine contest. It's about time someone like you brought it to everyone's attention. Eventually, the old school DOD's will be the sought after Gem's.

      @MrScary-dp6oe 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I concur with FFGG22E... I believe the old vintage DOD 201 and 401 are incredible phasers/phasors. Curt Mitchell uses the DOD 401 for his Van Halen instructional video, but he doesn't actually tell you what he's using. You can see it vaguely a couple of times throughout this video.. th-cam.com/video/46vBZLIIRX4/w-d-xo.html

      If you are playing it live and loud, any of these phasers would do the trick because a lot of fine detail gets washed up in the band's overall sound. The difference would be heard more in the studio, but who is going to play a cover song exactly like the album in the studio?

  • @JesseJuup

    • @BuddycatAFK
      @BuddycatAFK  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah. I agree about the block.
      Especially when it’s live and loud it just doesn’t come across as well and can even make the guitar seem a little quieter when you kick it on.
      The other two seem to just add the right amount of flavor.

  • @jameshill2015

    Block logo MXR sounds cheap..maybe it's just it's being compared with a much more natural sounding script logo MXR.. I am not gonna lie..the DOD was impressive!! It seemed to be more Leslie sounding than phase.. it did a beautiful job but comparing it to the Script it seemed to lack some of the effect..even more subtle than the Script. There is clearly a reason the Block logo is so much cheaper.. put on a Page tune like "10 years gone" lead part and compare, with the Pink Floyd.. well.. the DOD was where it impressed me most.. it has a slightly different tone but it's a sweet tone.. thanks for your comparison vid! Well done! I ordered (about an hour ago) a Script 90 Analogman modded w phase intensity control knob and true bypass with power light added. It should cover all bases. Can't wait!

    The DOD does that thing some phasers do that I really dislike - it sounds like it’s turning the treble up and down on the signal like a tremolo. Sounds more evident with the single coils.

    • @BuddycatAFK
      @BuddycatAFK  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think it depends on the setup. Played quietly and placed after overdrive it really kills the treble. Almost to the point of sounding like volume going up and down. However, placed before an overdriven amp or before a pedal used to over drive the amp it sounds pretty nice. It took me years before I realized this after seeing Paul Gilbert explain where He puts his phaser (think first Van Halen). This doesn’t apply to heavy dirt or fuzz of course. I that case you want the phaser after. Just my opinion but probably why a univibe works better with fuzz. Less of the horrible effect your describing.

    • @GuitarBob6
      @GuitarBob6 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@BuddycatAFK Yeah, I realize placement changes the sound of a phaser and I've owned several phasers but the ones I've kept (HBE Psilocybe and Subdecay Quasar DLX) have settings that don't do that, no matter where they're placed.

  • @stephen3164
    @stephen3164 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Script sounds so much more usable to my ears. I have a no-led Script (oh, one note and you know it’s on!), and a block logo 90. The block logo is more over the top, less subtle.
    I played with putting them before and after my overdrive pedal. Definitely get different effects where it is placed.
    Using two phasors at once just sounded bad. Using a wah pedal with one of these and it just turns to garbage.

    • @BuddycatAFK
      @BuddycatAFK  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agree about the script. Once things are cranked up it doesn’t let your guitar get quite as lost in the mix. It’s like it just ads something rather than just completely changing your tone.
      Anything Over the top never seems to work out loud and live.
      A little like an improperly used fuzz at home that sounds massive but then live your guitar disappears when you click it on :D
