  • Host Herb Hake tells the story of how on a stormy July evening in 1881 Kate Shelley crossed the railroad bridge over the Des Moines River near Moingona, Iowa, to warn the station to stop the passenger train when the bridge over Honey Creek was washed out in a flood. This program originally aired in central Iowa as part of the Iowa TV Schooltime program. This program originally aired on WOI-TV in central Iowa in April 1959 as part of the Iowa TV Schooltime series of programming. This episode is part of the "Landmarks in Iowa History" series.

    Why didn't they just leave the Des Moines river bridge in place when they took up the track

      Often bridge components were (and are) reused. Also liability.

      Parts of it are now under highway 30.

      Would be cool but they’d need to lay all new track and rebuild the bridges.
