      I've thought long and hard about the benefits of keeping the record outside of the cover and opted to keep mine in. I use the Blake sleeves though, in such a way that the flap position corresponds to the cover opening so I can get the record out without taking the sleeve out of the cover.

      Open it, brush it, play it, catalog it, flip it over, (outer) sleeve it, shelf it; having enjoyed the process so far: repeat from time to time.
      It's not rocket science, after all...

    The first thing I do is wait until I get a stack of about two dozen or so records, which I take to my SpinClean. After cleaning and drying, I then put them on my turntable to give
    them a listen. Clean records only on my platter!

    Great advice Frank on preserving the exterior packaging of the record. The stickers add cache to the record exterior and the plastic sleeves guard against fading of the cover art. In my own situation space became an issue so the removal of the packaging and exterior sleeves was necessary. I cut out the stickers and put them in a box. Keep on spinnin !

    My current ritual.
    1) Remove the shrink. Remove the LP. Most new releases have those card paper inner sleeves that do nothing but scratch the hell out of the record. These can be tight and stuck to the record due to static. Care must be taken to remove the record without causing any scratching or scuffing.
    2) A cleaning on a VPI 16.5 RCM. I use the AIVS number 6 fluid which is there one step fluid. I have the three step fluids, but those only get used on really dirty records.
    3) Record is placed in a MoFi sleeve and the cover is placed in a 3mil outer sleeve. Most records are stored in the outer sleeve behind the jacket. The original sleeve is placed inside the jacket. Hype stickers that contain additional information (like the Pink Floyd reissues) are cut off the original shrink wrap and placed inside the original jacket as well.
    4) Add the record to my collection on Discogs. If the release is not yet on there, I will add it to the database first.
    5) Playing them might be done at the same time. Sometimes I must wait until I have enough time dedicated to listening.

      10 to 15$, I think. I went back after RSD, on the Monday, to see if there were any spare copies of Penny Lane / Strawberry Fields Forever, and he said "sold out 15 minutes ago, so....come back later..." - that was the guy I pissed off with the MoFi's. So grown up, getting even with me.

  • @FatCityVinyl

    I was skeptical about the anti-shrink thing myself until fairly recently...when I was buying records in the 80's I always used to do as you did here, open but leave the shrink on and those records still look pretty good today. So when I started buying vinyl again I did the same...now I am going through my shelves and finding things I bought 3, 4 years ago or whatever and the corners are getting creased from the plastic constricting. Not all, but a few. Never had a problem with older used records that still had shrink or were sealed. I use an Excel spreadsheet as well, not switching to Discogs at this point in the game and spend 1600 hours of my life re entering everything. Cheers Frank!

    • @Channel33RPM
      @Channel33RPM  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good info! I will keep close tabs on the records I have with shrink on them. The only time I will keep it on is it's a non-gatefold, and there is a cool hype sticker.
      I'm with you on Discogs. I just can't re-enter everything again.
      Cheers!
      Frank

  • @MattHayesVinyl
    @MattHayesVinyl 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    A great idea to keep a spreadsheet! I did start one on Discogs but it took a long time to look things up and I lost interest. Maybe an Excel spreadsheet would be better (although it won't tell you the value of your collection automatically).
    When buying records I always keep them stacked up until I have at least 10, but ideally more like 20, and then I'll Spin Clean them. I store my records the same way as you with the record inside a sleeve (sometimes MoFi but usually Disckeeper 2.0) at the back. I then use a 3mm sleeve to put the whole lot in. I have the sleeve opening at the top which may sound illogical because dust can get in...but have you ever tried pulling out a record horizontally when the opening is on the side? Good luck getting it out without the record and/or sleeve falling out.

    I used to have a spreadsheet for my collection.... But i have to tell you discogs is one incredible data base. It only took me a few hours to enter over 300 records. Just type the catalog # or scan the barcode with Your phone.

  • @AndyP126
    @AndyP126 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Discogs has a great phone app. Just scan the bar code and add it to your collection. You can group by folder and add comments. It's very convenient and easily searchable on your phone when you see something in the thrift store and you're 100% sure if you own it already.

    I process my records to MP3 I use Sony Sound Forge Audio Studio 10 to convert the recording to digital. Whilst on the turntable, I play the record "wet", which means I apply a mix of water, methylated spirit and dishwashing liquid(in roughly equal parts) to the disc while it rotates. This lubricates the surface and also eliminates static charge, helping also to dampen the clicking and popping noise from surface scratches(as long as they're not too deep). If I encounter looping-click...er looping-click...er looping-click...er looping-click.....I can edit it out easily by finding the point where the repeated portions begin and end, and with a mouse-click, the repeats are gone!

    • @neilforbes416
      @neilforbes416 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah. I bought a turntable a while back but it needed a new stylus. I took the cartridge and headshell to a place I knew in Newcastle(NSW, Australia) to get the right type(Audio Technica model, number unknown), I've now to reinstate the turntable and make necessary adjustments to get back into transferring some recently-bought 45s to MP3. Cheers!

    I thoroughly inspect it before I clean it with my Nitty-Gritty vacuum machine. I check out the deadwax info and then go to Discogs for any details that may not be on the inner sleeve or outer jacket. Then while playing it I enter it into my spreadsheet. Then after it passes inspection I record it at 96/32 resolution. My biggest problem is that I haven't bought any albums in 6 months. :(

    I've got a question. I take VERY GOOD care of my LP's and have a decent turntable ($400 in 2000). I've noticed that Pink Floyd's Endless River is riddled with noise after only 4 plays and my David Gilmour Live in Gdansk lp#5 (Echoes acoustic) is getting some noise. I use MO-FI sleeves and take good care of the Stylus (bought a new one two years ago). What in the heck is messing with my vinyl? The Endless River is so bad, I'm going to buy another copy. I know it's not the turntable because other vinyl is DEAD QUIET.

    If it's a plain sleeve like that, even though it is black, why not slide it back into the actual cover? You're never really gonna need to get it out, after all. It's not like one of the ones with art or a tracklist on it.

    If it's used : dish soap bath/rinse, wood glue, Gruv Glide. If it's new : just Gruv Glide.

      Channel 33 RPM I like it a lot. It completely gets rid of static, and puts a super slick coating on the record that virtually eliminates pops and ticks, and minimizes wear on both the vinyl, and the stylus - kinda like playing the record wet, but less messy, and waaaaaaay less dangerous. The record needs to be as clean as possible for best results, it is not a cleaner.

    Dude, you couldn't have picked a better album to go with, Lucifer are amazing! Now, hurry up and go get Lucifer II and Lucifer III if you haven't done so already.. oh, and I don't go that far when I get a new album, take the shrink wrap off, put it into a plastic sleeve, and always use a vinyl brush before playing.. is enough for me.

    Thoroughly cataloging your ongoing collection on Excel is pretty wise, especially for insurance purposes.

      Funny you mention this... I started cataloging my records years ago at my wife's suggestion... for insurance purposes. That said, I still need to get a special rider for them.

    Hey dude, I have several albums with a minor warp. Still playable but the warp bothers me. Do you suggest a "record clamp" or
    a "vinyl flattner"? Whats the difference? Thanks!

    • @Channel33RPM
      @Channel33RPM  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've never tried a vinyl flatter, but it's basically the equalivant of placing a record between two pieces of plexiglass and applying some mild heat. A record clamp is a clamp that fastens your record to the centre spindle off your turntable. Hope this helps.

    World wide shipping on T-Shirts? Will they ship to a APO address now?
    Mike in Germany

    • @Channel33RPM
      @Channel33RPM  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mike... good to hear from you, and good point... Unfortunately, still no APO. Also no shipping to Canada's northern territories (not related to you, I know, but for anyone this may affect).
      It's a weird glitch in the system, but I think it's related to the fact these goes out via courier.
      Cheers!

      Yeah, I thought it was still the same. I have a forwarding address in the States, but I have to pay a charge for it and shipping also from there to me. Probaly better to just order the T-Shirts to my German address.
      Anyways, I always clean my new Records before playing them the first time also.
      Order placed!!
