I loved this man and his music, composition, and lyrics. He was an original soul with precious abilities and tremendous insights on the spiritual tier that 99.95% of human beings will never comprehend. Only the Indians will know!
Mankind has been truely diminished since we lost Harry back in '81. Native Americans have a highly complimentary term for someone of his stature. They refere to such individuals as "human beings". Harry was truely a man among men. Your music was part of my generation & I for one will never forget you Harry. Your son & brother Tom continue to carry the tourch you lit supporting the charities set up in your name. Rest in peace Harry. You've earned it.
Well said, I'm a Long Island guy and Harry, whether people are aware, is still a major force for good. We need more people like this and less geedy hateful people.
"what ever we once had was gone", has been going around in my head for a whle now but couldn't quite place it until I found this clip - thanks (i think).
A unremitting tragedy is this man's loss, no question about it. 32 years passed the fabulously talented storyteller and whimsical wordsmith sung his last and left a world of appreciative adulation in utter disbelief. 38 is far...far too soon. It seems he was just too busy doing everything for everyone and eating improperly at all the wrong times,( seems we still have that culture today). On the road to another charity concert he left the lane abruptly, collided with an oncoming truck and was rescued from the ensuing inferno of his vehicle by the driver of THAT same truck. He was removed to hospital but was found to have expired upon arrival, and so the world continues on its journey without another wonderful human being. 32 years, might as well be yesterday such is the sadness.
An absolutely brilliant and touching song by a master storyteller, who left us too soon. The story is heartbreakingly poignant with a daring musical arrangement that incorporates many intricacies and subtleties. It is a song that almost anyone can relate to whether or not they have found their love. And of course you have to credit Harry for being so confident in his own work to include a stanza of Sylvia Plath's poem in the lyrics. Both artists were here for too short a time, but live on in our appreciation of their work.
Harry Chapin and Jim Croce had to have been formed from similar molds and then immediately broken because you'll never hear powerful music like they provided from anyone.
Oh, where you going to my lady blue? A smile seemed to come to her slowly, it was a sad smile just the same. She walked away in silence....we both got what we asked for such a long long time ago. And me I’m flying in my taxi, taking tips, and getting stoned. Cool lyrics.
You are truly a genius, and the first person I have ever met to link them. Both are, in the truest sense, a trubadour, and probably the two greatest. You might also consider putting Dan Fogelberg with them. And sadly, all of them taken from us, with untold lyrics, music and singing that we can only imagine. You truly have a great appreciation for finer things of music.
The Amazon prime channel has an excellent documentary about him and the brothers Chapin. Very interesting to note his wife wrote a poem of cats in the cradle to which he set to a song. Also interesting and unexpected that he signed the biggest record deal at the time in the 60s on the strength of that band and his ability to tell a story.
agreed i can only imagine what he'd be doing now with music and maybe movies possibly or writing books. sucks all these good artists aren't here anymore :(
We visited Harry a few years ago, WE found the cemetery but no one was around there or in the shops to tell us where to look, the place was just empty and we are sitting in the car in the cemetery taking one last look that no one else was there and someone tapped on the window and said follow me. it rather startled us but he knew where to go and told very interesting stories about Harry. WE knew it was his brother Steve but he never told us t hat.
That haunting voice of "Big John", just incredible.
what a shame this man died so young but we still have his music and that will life forever
Man Taxi is awesome. Brings back the past.
This Man..Was a Man in every sense of the word...Charitable beyond measure...I miss his talent..But mostly i just miss him
I'm 16 once again on a rainy day when I hear this song. Music is a time machine set on rewind.
Watching this man, Harry Chapin, sing this song, tell this story..magic moments all the way through.

How awesome is it to be able to listen to this song...now, how awesome is it to be able to WATCH them play this song as we listen to it...
Soundstage back in the 70’s had some great talent walk across the stage. Harry was one of the best. BB King, and Chicago are right up there as well.
Supreme story-teller in song. Missed sorely.

One of my fav songs. Love the vid. Thanks for sharing.
Such a great "story song." There's not many that are better than this. Poignancy, melancholy, regrets-- it's all there.

The motto of the 70s: I go flying so high when I'm stoned.

I completely agree with you!!
I want to make a movie based on this song!

@GiggleBlizzard I believe someone said something along the lines of "....good artists borrow, great artists steal..."
everytime i hear it
Do y'all want to hear Harry's best? Get the album "Sniper and Other Love Songs". I'm sure you will figure it out. Relevant today.
Great "burbling" bass accompaniment. Les Paul bass?
Baby's so high that she's ski'in
Baby's flyin'
Afraid to fall

Baby's cryin'
