I have a cornish rocker too. Excellent system and really simple to adjust. I’d be a bit wary of quoting 40% improvement in production though. Maybe in winter compared to a flatter orientation. But at similar cost to a fixed system it’s definitely a winner!

I started with a Zappi Charger for the car, then got a 6Kwh Array - roof mounted - half on a flat roof, half on slate. There are solutions for most roof types. Back end of last year I got a 9.5Kwh GivEnergy battery - not as sophisticated as the Tesla, but much cheaper. My panels generated 6.2Mwh last year. I also insulated the loft and we replaced our windows which gave a big improvement in reducing heat loss. Also got a dehumidifier to reduce mold which is prevalent here in Guernsey. Already thinking about getting a bigger battery and a Heat pump. (no subsidies or grants here). biggest saving is probably the car which is free to run over the summer.
😃Good of you. You could look ar IR-heater. They use your house, itself as the thermal mass, to heat the space inside your house. It was on one of the very recent shows of either the Fully charged show or everything electric channels. I think you would do very well with that to for example dry out your house and heat it at the same time.

Very nice! I'm a fan of ground mounts when one has the room. Maintenance and cleaning become very simple. There are no issues with optimum direction and tilt that one might have with a roof. If one really wants to splurge for high wattage, tracking systems cost a bit but there is no human intervention required in their tracking the sun from dawn to dusk. These days, PV is so cheap that the decision to track is mitigated by simply putting in more panels. It depends on the technology, but mine produce about 20% of the wattage during total overcast, so I simply multiplied my home's needs by that amount. Produces a huge amount of excess, but so what? The cost was minimal.
Great approach. We've added 6.4Kw Solar to our roof with an ASHP and an eddie to our two bed 1960s semi bungalow. Did this two years ago and never regretted it, but I was really envious of the battery and gateway. The one piece of the jigsaw is that we need cheaper batteries. Liability 5Kw £5k and the Power wall at £10k doesn't make sense without an EV. Love the whole Fully Charged output.

If you have the space, ground mount solar MUCH better than putting on your roof. You have to keep the solar panels clean and easier to clean when on the ground. Great setup with the heat pump as well.
I feel like at some point we need a description of what all the various bits n bobs in the closet of all these houses that get shown do. With all the different companies hopping into the "electrify your house" space, saying things like "Eddi" doesn't mean much (especially if its a UK-only brand).
There must be over 100,000 videos on youtube that explain what all the various bits and bobs do, and it feels like I've watched all of them. If only there was a way to search the internet for something!
An Eddy is an excess energy manager. So if reads a storage device is full, and the user configures whether that excess energy goes to grid, or to another energy storage device like the hot water tank's elements. I don't know the industry term for the device but they likely don't go deep into details because every product has its own features and benefits :)
Nice range of technologies here, I particularly liked the Cornish rocker. I did raise an eyebrow at the location of the heat pump outdoor unit - with a wall facing it like that you'll get a lot of recirculation of cold exhaust air, which will reduce efficiency. As an installer that would not be where I'd recommend putting one. (Also a couple of hours with a few quid of lagging and some cable ties would noticeably reduce losses from those pipes - the existing stuff looks a bit gappy)
To add the step of viewing what you may get as an incentive or reduction in bills as a future budget is the way to go if you can. I understand it’s easy for older people with disposable income to take this view but our politicians & policymakers need to make this a reality for all.

Snow removal and perhaps washing the panels comes to might right away. Do look carefully at the cost and strength of tracking or seasonally tiltable mounts. Too often, the extra cost of moveable mounts provides Less energy than spending the same money on more panels on a fixed mount. I'll concede that tiltable mounts might make more sense in the extreme north(or south) than for those closer to the equator.
Great foresight by Gerald in planning for the addition of an EV to his power consumption. If only governments were as wise in countering the extra demands on their own national grid supply that the increase in EV numbers will cause. Instead of all the hand-wringing over the grid failing due to EV charging demand they should be incentivising PV installation to promote electrical self--sufficiency and increased generation capacity on a national scale while also increasing the economic viability of EVs.

Living in a 18thC home would like to know more about the heating system, e.g. what temp is the system running at, how big are the rads, how much power is used over winter. We run our solid fuel/wood system on low 24/7 to do similar to them, i.e. keeping it constantly warm which helps stop damp. I know some people 'up the road' who took out their air source as it was using so much power, but I think they where trying to use it like a standard oil boiler, with a big heat input morning and evening.
Rads run at 40 degrees C, No need to change pipes and only had to change 4 single side rads same size 60cm X120cm but double sided and we use about 1000 Kw per month over this winter so far.

This episode was very eye opening to all the tech. I would love to do my house to save on outgoings and do a part for the environment but living in an early 80s 2 bed with a craft room in the attic have no space for all the modern tech😭😭. Oh and Emily you are a very good presenter of these episodes.
This content is so alienating. Everyone that has featured on this kind of episode is a financially stable older person or couple. Who have the means to take advantage of every government incentive and benefit. The young people of this country are being left even further behind not being able to access all of these incentives and support simply because they haven't had the time to build wealth and resources yet.
I understand your frustrations😇...from experience start small by accumulating PV system components(even used)...it may take years...Save 💸& sacrifice of 'wants' (eating out vs. home for example) . Once you accumulated minimum size (Array + inverter ) & get operational (find an electrician &/or DIY with them or skilled friends on weekends /holiday for example) . Then use those small savings off energy & REINVEST to expand...we had poverty level income & did it this slow way over a decade...we now have over 10kW system💡!🤓 🗽
Gerald did mention the possibility of people investing in Renewable energy co-ops as a way to be environmentally involved while making back a return on investment that might be used to eventually move to smaller more direct projects of your own.
Understand your frustrations, but we were also young once with no room or means to invest - but also this stuff didn’t exist! I have a ev and Aotearoa is a mostly renewable power grid moving to 98% by 2030. Wood burner is next on the chopping block. To be replaced with electrons at some point. Solar and battery eventually.
A very friendly host and interviewee, but it’s so disheartening being a young person in this country seeing content like this. The already well off middle aged and older folk have their energy bills paying for itself while the young are left perpetually stranded without homes to be able to do this and paying the mortgage on someone else’s second and third home.
Great! I would suggest to mount the array of panels a bit higher so that the ground beneath it could still be farmed and also to keep them cooler with better air flow.

My main reason to go for ground mount is that my house is surrounded by trees.
It's amazing how much solar PV tech has improved. His 3.6kWh array is HUGE. I've got 3.2kWh and it's on only 10 panels on my roof.
Certainly has. The 11-year old ones on my roof are 235W. The ones my company installs now range between 360 & 400W.

Also the addition of the elevation solar adjustment is about 30% extra energy generation when you change angle in summer and winter.

Looking forward to more houses doing these installs, then having them passed onto the next generation. Would be lovely to pass down to your kids and have them not pay for fossil fuels their whole lives without the big upfront cost burden!

As per Emilie's request. I have a ev and Aotearoa is a mostly renewable power grid moving to 98% by 2030. Wood burner is next on the chopping block. To be replaced with electrons at some point. Solar and battery eventually.

It isn’t true that slate roofs can’t take solar.
It can't go in my roof because of the roof construction (rag slate), shouldn't be a problem with standard modern slate roofs.
My panels are east south and west and i can make more power in a day than a friend who has a more powerfull system than i do .
A very friendly host and interviewee, but it’s so disheartening being a young person in this country seeing content like this. The already well off middle aged and older folk have their energy bills paying for itself while the young are left perpetually stranded without homes to be able to do this and paying the mortgage on someone else’s second and third home.

I would suggest to mount the array of panels a bit higher so that the ground beneath it could still be farmed and also to keep them cooler with better air flow.
The key is loading up on the panels!!! They are NOT expensive - 13,000 Watt system is brilliant! Love this guy ❤️💕❤️🩹🇨🇦
