MIRACLE ON THE VISTULA. BATTLE OF WARSAW 1920.

  • On August 15th we mark the anniversary of the Battle of Warsaw, the free world’s first major victory over communism. Poles refer to this victory as the “Miracle on the Vistula.” Newly-independent Poland faced a formidable foe - Vladimir Lenin was ready to see his Bolshevik revolution spread beyond Russia’s borders. He was confident that history was on his side and the Red Army invincible.
    But he was stopped.
The victory came on the very day Poles were celebrating the Feast of the Assumption. Watching the Soviet advance they prayed for divine intercession…

In my opinion, Europe should be grateful to Poland for three historical events:
    1683 battle of Vienna
    1920 miracle on the Vistula
    1940 Battle of Britain
Poland is a nation that always saves Europe's ass. Do not thank us. Let us exist.

If the allies were competent and Britain hadn't pretended to be a superpower the war would have been over much sooner with millions less dead and Poland would be much more recognised for its part. The Germans were going to attack France a month after Poland but the Polish defence destroyed so much equipment they had to delay by 6 months to attack in May. That was more than enough time for the allies to prepare a spectacular defence or invasion considering they outnumbered the Germans and 4:1 during the invasion of Poland and had much better equipment with a frontline much much smaller than Poland had with Germany/the USSR.

@Samuel Kováč that would still end in a communist force occupying Checho-Slovakia and Poland at least. That threaght was the main reason Poland didn't allow Soviet troops through their land to help C-S. WW2 ending quickly would probably give the best result for giving the Soviets as little influence in Europe as possible.

You want badasses? I`ll give you badasses. In one story i`ll tell you best and at the same time most heart breaking story, that illustrates what this country is:
Battle of Zadwórze. 330 Lviv Eaglets vs 1st Calvary Army of Budyonny. I wll cry, if i try to tell it in detail, so let`s just say, that "40 - 1" of Sabaton looks like amateur hour near those people- in Wizna defense, we had adults, soldiers, hiding in up to date bunkers- fighting skillfully, with decent gear...
In Zadwórze Battle you had people, who were 15- 17 years old, and guys over 20 were old sweats already, and they were fighting in the open... until ammo ran out... and then, still keeping cohesion, they fought with bayonets and rifle butts. 318 died, soviets, angered by resistance, dragged wounded ones after the horses, cut dead to pieces, shot other in the heads...
I was at Eaglets Cementery, in Lviv, over 10 years ago. I was 20 at the time, and i walked by tombstones, that had dates of birth and death... I walked by people, who died at the age of 15, 16. Probably never saw much beside home town, never actuall touched a girl... And my question was "where the fuck were adults, who allowed that?!"... Like with Warsaw Uprising- it was a crime on young, brave people, who we miss dearly to this day. People, who had the good of nation at heart, unlike those fucking soul selling mutts, that rule us ever since...

Lepiej Bitwa Warszawska 1920, a z dalszej historii np. bitwa pod Orszą 1514, odsiecz smoleńska 1632 albo coś o 'potopie rosyjskim' 1654-1667, czyli o póki możemy nadrabiajmy braki z czasów zaborów i komuny.

    • @maciekk3894
      @maciekk3894 5 ปีที่แล้ว +19

Habsburgowie zagarnęli Węgry, Siedmiogród, Słowenię i kawał Chorwacji, Wenecja wzięła sobie Dalmację, Rosja wykroiła dostęp do Morza Czarnego i okolice Odessy. Sobieski odzyskał jedynie Podole, ale przede wszystkim planował przyłączyć do Polski Mołdawię (czyli dojście do M. Czarnego) oraz podporządkować Węgry i Siedmiogród (Węgrzy sami się o to prosili) a nawet dojść do ujścia Dunaju, wziąć Multany, czyli część Wołoszczyzny, co by cudownie zmieniło naszą geopolitykę. A w dalszej perspektywie dawało nam możliwość na odzyskanie równowagi w zmaganiach z Rosją i odzyskanie ziem zabranym w wyniku "potopu rosyjskiego" (wsch. Ukraina i Smoleńsk).

      @maciejandrzejhrakao-horaws9407 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

+Tom Are you kidding me right now, you must be..! 1939.09.01 - German aggression on Poland from the west. IIWW and Blitzkrieg has begun. 16 days later red army attacks Poland from the east. Poland betrayed by her allies: Great Britain and France; none of them helped... How tf do you think we WOULD "defeat the Soviet military aggression in 1939 or 1945"?! Ignorance. Ignorance everywhere. Stop playing "LoL" (or whatever you grind in) and start reading. Otherwise - stay silent.

Tom. We stopped Soviets in 1920, which gave 19 years without war to the rest of Europe. And, in 1939 Soviet Russia attacked us on east 17 days after Nazi Germany did on west. So, imagine a contry, 21 years afer regaining independece in WW I after 123 years (which were filled with rebelions where many thousands Poles were killed), 19 years after Battle of Warsaw, facing both Nazis and Soviets, two great armies, without help from allies. Britain and France declared war on Germany, and thats all.
And in 1945? At Yalta Conference Big three (Soviets, UK, USA) decided that Poland will be under Soviet "care" - cause Stalin promised he would do "free" election in Poland. You know what Churchill said? "Poor Neville Chamberlain believed he could trust Hitler. He was wrong. But I don't think I am wrong about Stalin". Later, he saw that he was wrong, but our freedom was once again taken, until 1989/1990.
If you want to know more, read abut events I've mentioned. I'm not a historian, and these are some basics.

Tom Now Do you really think poland would have been able to handle a two front war in 1939? They gave a valiant defence for weeks, but theres only so much to be done.
Little more than 20 years to build up the military infrastructure it takes takes to accomplish that.
The real mistake was on the part of the allies. They should have mobilized immediately and invaded west germany while the nazi forces were bogged down in poland. The allies could have ended the was in september 1939.. Theil faith in the maginot line what motivated their honournless tactics.
They did not hold up their mutual defemce treaties..

Tom - You said (among other statements), quote: _"I still think Poland should have spent the years from 1920 to 1939 building up one of the greatest military forces in Europe."_
Your thought process is not only shallow but based on total ignorance of reality! It almost seems that you place your understanding of Geo-politics and history on, e.g. malleable video games, as opposed to cold hard facts.
Here's a quick education: Poland was an annexed territory of Germany, Austria-Hungary and Russia, from 1795 to 1918. By late 1915, Germany had complete control over modern-day Poland. A 2005 Polish study estimated 3,376,800 Poles were conscripted into the armed forces of the occupying powers during World War I, an additional 300,000 were conscripted for forced labor by the Germans. The Russians and Austrians forcibly resettled 1.6 to 1.8 million persons from the war zone in Poland. According to Michael Clodfelter, Polish war dead were 1,080,000, whilst 200,000 Polish civilians were killed in the fighting on the Eastern Front; 870,000 men were forced to serve in the German, Austrian and Russian armies.
In 1918 Poland regained its independence (less than 2 short years prior to the Polish-Soviet War in 1920) after having been a non-country for 123-years (think about that). During this entire 123-year period, Poland and its people were completely fragmented. The only things that kept the Polish spirit alive (unlike your belief - calling it; _"nationalistic jingoism and super-patriotic conceits"_) was the deep-rooted pride of its people, their patriotism and their faith in God. Poles had lost a huge number of their fighting age men during WW1 and was economically in dire straights. In 1918 it had to start from scratch, rebuilding its society, economy, infrastructure... EVERYTHING! Yet you seem to blame Poles - in their now almost embryonic state - for not being able to defeat TWO of Europe's strongest military forces (Germany and the Soviet Union) due to not having built _"the strongest fighting force in Europe"_ within just 18 years of fighting the Soviets?
*Are you serious?* Other 'very long established' nations in Europe were defeated by the Germans alone!
Also, you said, quote: _"I see no value in looking back at 1920 and thinking that the Virgin Mary saved Poland because the battle of Warsaw took place on the Feast of the Assumption and because the Virgin Mary is much loved in Poland. Thinking like that just gets people killed because people think they don't have to prepare for things, but can just rely on God to protect and save them."_
It seems that your obtuseness even stretches to the strong spiritual strength that faith in Roman Catholicism and God provided Poles throughout their history and its' MANY battles and wars, e.g. when Poland defeated the Ottoman Empire from occupying Europe at the Battle of Vienna in 1683 (th-cam.com/video/YyXIMravePk/w-d-xo.html pay attention to the Kings words at 5:00 and also th-cam.com/video/X8zCv0AHnCs/w-d-xo.htmlm5s )... and during many previous successful battles against the Ottomans and other enemies, very often against all odds, due to being incredibly outnumbered sometimes by as much as 10-1. So yes, many would understandably call those victories (as well as the one in 1920) "won with the assistance from God" or even miraculous!
As for Liam Neeson... his role in this video is NOT as an 'actor' but as a narrator. I find it quite shocking that you cannot tell the difference! So, it's clear that YOUR perceptions stem from 'fantasy Hollywood land' instead of being based on historical reality.
And after all that Poland has endured throughout its amazing history, for it to hold the strong socioeconomic 'growing' position it does today - not only in Eastern/Central Europe but also Western Europe - this, by any recognized standards, should never have happened! Of course Polish people are not "super-beings or demi-gods" (as you stated) but after everything that the Polish people have been through, they certainly possess, to use your words "a special greatness"... absolutely! And the two things that Poles of centuries ago and today hold so very dear to their heart... is their patriotism and their faith, so to imply that their behaviour/attitude was/is blinded by _"nationalistic jingoism and super-patriotic conceits"_ is definitely a gross insult.
Need I remind you that in your opening paragraph, you said; _" I'm not trying to denigrate the Polish people"_ ... and then you did precisely that!
Re: 1920, I recommend watching this video: th-cam.com/video/aN73N9EjoM4/w-d-xo.html
      In Addition:
You seem very confused. You said, quote: _"Nations and peoples of the world who still believe in democracy, the rule of law, freedom of the press, freedom of religion (including freedom from religion for those who choose that), etc., must unite to fight the growing cancer of authoritarianism (Russia; N. Korea; China; Trump; Islamism) in the world."_
So, in your opinion Trump is 'authoritarian' and a 'growing cancer' and you position him alongside N. Korea (though the two are on completely opposing sides in every way imaginable), and even though Trump supports and promotes: democracy, the rule of law, freedom of the press and freedom of religion... you call him a 'growing cancer!' Hmmm!!!
Plus, you criticize Trump (who's certainly a figure of 'strength' preparing for potential conflicts), yet you say, quote; _"We need to be strong and prepare for the storm on the horizon."_ Hmm, 'continuity' is certainly not your strong point, is it?!
You castigate both sides of the spectrum and everyone in between, seemingly dreaming for a Utopia of sorts, and yet offer no solution to your perceived global problem(s)? In my book, your statements only reflect an outlook that a naive, confused and ignorant juvenile could and would make.
Thus, I strongly suggest you hit your analytical 'reset button' and re-evaluate your own perceptions of 'fact versus fiction' with regards to Geo-politics, history and current affairs before making more spontaneous and unsophisticated comments on these subjects.

W skrócie - wszystko kwestia dzisiejszej opinii publicznej i tyle...

I don't hold this grudge towards the soldiers of the Red Army however, they were merely pawns in Stalins games (in the same way that the Wehrmacht were pawns for Hitlers, oh yeah and fuck nazis and the ss too), and the fact the red army defeated the nazis, hell many of the Soviet POW's held in Nazi camps were later put into gulags by...you guessed it STALIN.

Mi St I have not forgotten, almost all armies in ww2 committed rape and not all red army solders committed rape in the same way that not all Wehrmacht soldiers committed rape in Stalingrad and prior. While the red army rapes aren't justified (as there is no justification for rape AT ALL) I can understand why some in the red army committed those acts, it was a result of revenge (as one of the causes for war rape is this exact reason) and the fact that Commisars encouraged this barbarity too.

Wrong! From the tactical point of view, it was far superior in the quality the army's and Polish command over Bolshevik. "Miracle on the Vistula" term was invented by italian journalists. After this war polish authorities just start use this term for propaganda what is completely idiotic if we want to describe this battle today.

No re-read the actual battle and you will see the Bolshevik forces far out numbered the polish forces. By any criteria the Bolsheviks should of conquered Poland but they were routed and the defeat was so massive that Lenin decided to postpone all future invasions. No something miraculous did happen here. God bless Poland

Please, do not make a fool from yourself. Win was possible just because of good work of polish cryptographers whom decrypt every single radio message from bolsheviks. According to this Polish command can use their own military experience for make good tactical answer to bolshevik attacks because they know every single movement on battlefield of their opponets. You got very limited knowledge about this battle so you look at her trough the eyes of the child. Don't be like a kid.

Liam Neeson, a great actor, but an even better person. Acting is a game but life reveals who we really are thanks to you and others like Mel Gibson, Clint Eastwood Polish history speaks and the proud Polish people are awakening from a coma called communism. Liam Poland loves you

THANK YOU ALSO ROMANIA !!In 1920, during the Polish-Bolshevik war, Romania was the only country that allowed transports of weapons and ammunition to pass through its territory from Hungary to Poland. The government in Bucharest agreed to the transit of supplies to Poland despite the disastrous Hungarian-Romanian relations. On March 3, 1921, in Bucharest, the "Convention on a resistant alliance between the Republic of Poland and the Kingdom of Romania" was signed. The convention was signed by the Polish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Eustachy Sapieha, and his Romanian counterpart, Take Ionescu. The document said:
Poland and Romania undertake to assist each other in the event that one of them is attacked, without giving any reason on their part, on their present eastern borders.
Friendly relations between Poland and Romania have become the norm. Józef Piłsudski traveled to the Danube state many times, and the Romanian royal couple visited Poland. Mutual relations developed in many areas, from military to education.
