How Black Queer Culture Shaped History | Channing Gerard Joseph | TED

  • Names like Bayard Rustin, Frances Thompson and William Dorsey Swann have been largely erased from US history, but they and other Black queer leaders played central roles in monumental movements like emancipation, civil rights and LGBTQ+ pride, among others. In this tribute to forgotten icons, queer culture historian and TED Fellow Channing Gerard Joseph shares their little-known stories, connecting the origins of drag in the 1880s to the present day and exploring the awesome power to choose how we define ourselves.

It’s probably everywhere, not just here in the U.S., but, our country has had the nasty habit of erasing and hiding what it doesn’t want to be made known. If we doubt whether or not that’s true, we only have to think about how people didn’t seem to start searching for the complete truth about black history (unless I’m mistaken) until Alex Haley wrote the book Roots, which of course, led to the television miniseries. That’s when people really started to dig to learn the truth about our ancestors.
I took an African American history class back in the 90s, and even then, we didn’t have a proper textbook. The class had to be taught from regular nonfiction books.
We have to learn to embrace the truth of history in all its forms and stop getting angry with people when they make discoveries that they want others to know. Hopefully, we can do that.

Confused individuals having an identity crisis, are lost in pronouns because they don't understand the difference between identity and character/personality. My identity is 5 foot 11 inches tall, 190 lbs, brown hair brown eyes, caucasian, and born male in 1963. That's of public concern. What I do with that identity including how I dress, the car I drive, how I act, how I speak, my sexual preferences... my character/personality, aren't of public concern; to each their own. This is what we're supposed to teach our children. This LGBT nonsensical philosophy doesn't even like to acknowledge that B stands for bisexual; meaning that there are only two genders, male and female, and hermaphrodites are both. It's ridiculously absurd to say that there are more than two genders. Being a transvestite isn't a gender.

Awesome talk! I learned a lot about drag culture, and we often don't get to hear much about William Dorsey Swann, even within modern gay culture. It's important to remember where we come from.
To the individuals who want to silence gay people, drag queens, and others of different identities, you are the oppressors in history. You claim that we should be silenced because "everyone is equal" and then you throw us behind bars for being who we are. Never forget that if you don't have to worry about being exactly who you are, it's because you are privileged enough to not have to hide.

Black queer people were instrumental in black liberation, but not black queer culture per se. That's a mostly, if not wholly, an American invention. There have been elements of black culture that can be traced back to Africa, that could be considered queer according to modern sensibilities. But there's never been a case where queerness has ever largely characterized African or black subcultures. There just isn't enough historical precedent for that. (Or none that I'm aware of.) Queerness was tolerated and accepted but was relegated to the fringes of most African societies or capitalized on for specific functions, eg. Gay bodyguards and eunuch servants for female members of royal families. Outside of those contexts, it's never really been a thing for black people culturally until our identities got wrapped up in American and eurocentric societal contexts

Just to hear these histories is near miraculous in the context of the suppression of Black History more broadly. I am delighted to witness this champion of research and applaud the effort that has been made in bringing these cultural tributaries into the mainstream of history.
One thing troubled me though, that a great man like James Baldwin was not sited among the names in this all too brief exploration of Black, Queer History. I am so ignorant of the state of contemporary Black history presentation that I really need to see a broader perspective. Queer culture has always focussed on the visible, the show, the attention seeking behaviour. What of life for those who did not dress in camp outfits but tried to challenge the oppression with their intellect, their art. Is their effort not of value in the broader, all erasing sweep of history which leaves only the most doggedly persistent, the most flagrant and uncomfortable for historians to find and faithfully represent?

The few well-known queer Black icons are just the tip of a grand iceberg of legacy - a legacy which extends across cultures worldwide. It started being reclaimed by these groups in the late 80s, in a celebration of the difference that the word “queer” represents, and that is now the predominant usage today.
