It was indeed. I was just a tween when this came out and I went and saw it several times in the cinema as I was crazy for the soundtrack, HDS, NK, and a brief beautiful scene with the Texas female punk band, The Mydolls.

Ry Cooder's score is stunning. I bought the soundtrack immediately after seeing the film. I'd place the film on my top ten favourite films of all time. Hollywood films with all their sound and fury just couldn't compare to the simple beauty of this film.

Perhaps it's the mystery and the conjecture it causes. Who is this guy, what has happened, why is he trudging in the desert with a water problem (the discarded bottle and the last slug of water.)? Why the suit and tie? Will his shoes hold out? Great photos or paintings are great because they are so intriguing.

Great film with soundtrack to go with it. On my first trip to experience the Big Bend country in 1977, I drank a cold beer in the bar where Travis passes out. The area has changed somewhat but the film will keep it the way it was, forever

While a great flick, like so may films set in or about Texas however, little attempt is made in researching the state on which they have set the film (and it's not just Texas). Classic Hollywood arrogance assuming that Texas is this one monolithic, topographic landscape. Paris Texas is about as far from the desert as one can get in this massive, diverse state. Paris Texas is in the lush rolling hills of NE Texas not far from Dallas, nary a desert to be found. Like Spielberg's "Sugarland Express" a decade earlier, the town of Sugarland as suburb of Houston is not a couple of hours drive from Mexico, try a 6 hour drive and 350 miles. And like Paris Texas, Sugarland located in SE Texas, HAS NO DESERT!!!.

Completely agree. I live in Paris, Texas and it (as all of NE Texas) is lush piney woods and oak trees, heavily wooded. Most of the movie Paris, Texas wasn't even filmed there, as William Wenders was offended by some things said and positions taken by some of the powers that be in Paris, Texas. I was there, so I know what happened.
