ASH VALUE DETERMINATION
Ash values are helpful in determining the quality and purity of crude drugs, especially in powder form. The objective of ashing vegetable drugs is to remove all traces of organic matter, which may otherwise interfere in an analytical determination. On incineration, crude drugs normally leave an ash usually consisting of carbonates, phosphates and silicates of sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium.

ASH VALUESThe residue remaining after incineration is the ash content of the drug.( inorganic salts of carbonates, phosphates, silicates of sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium) is known as ash content.Ash value is a criterion to judge the identity OR purity of the crude drug
TYPES OF ASH VALUES
1.Total ash value
2.Acid insoluble ash value
3.Sulphated ash value
4. Water soluble ash value
1.Total ash value: Useful for detecting low grade products Useful for detecting exhausted products. Useful for detecting excess of sandy Useful for detecting earthy matter with drug.
Procedure
1. Weigh accurately about 2-3 gm of the powdered drug in a tared silica crucible
2.Incinerate the powdered drug by gradually increasing the heat until free from carbon and cool. Keep it in desiccators
3. Weigh the ash and calculate the % of the total ash with reference to the air dried sample
Acid insoluble ash value :
1. Used for the determination of earthy matter present on roots, rhizomes, and also on the leaves
2. Crude drugs contain calcium oxalate crystals the amount may varies depending on the environmental conditions.

The video is really interesting and everything is explained in detail. I have a doubt, if Whatman filter paper of ashless grade is not available, what can be used? I have come across the usage of Sintered glass crucible (Gooch type). But I don't know how to use it, for determining the acid insoluble ash content? Can you guide me in this aspect?

Thank u for the video...here u use powder sample to determine ash but if the sample isnot powder i.e.vegetable spinach which is raw containing 90%moisture how2determine it??

Mam u have done wrong calculation....how will it come 0.25g after subtracting 36.08 from 35.23.
Calculation is right....In the sheet ...value obtained is 0.15 g ..not 0.25 g.. after subtracting 35.93 g from 36.08 g
