At first I thought it were acquaintances or socialites, but it would probably not have been possible to kill them off like that. The assumption is, just as mentioned, that those people ill-advised her. Instead of leading her in virtous ways it is implied they put and reinforced bad behavior and immoral thinking into her mind, thus she and them were punished by killing them off.
