    So I've been getting a lot of comments saying this reddit poster meant to say "fighting arts" in their section on what guardians are. I'm not entirely sure that's what they meant. I personally thought they just forgot to put commas between fighting and art since the school does teach things like pottery. Either way, my point still stands. I just wanted to bring that up before I get 500 more comments about it.

    If guardians get paid, what's their life insurance plan? Do they get laid-off? Do they have medical insurance? Do their families get coverage? Do they go on strike? Is there a promotion tier? How much do they get paid? Does it depend on the importance of the quest?

      If someone asked me to make a tier system for a guild I would actually go with what most people use as rankings because it’s somewhat easy to use depending on the job depends on the coins however there would be “basic” jobs that everyone can do to either make some quick cash if needed you don’t even need to be a adventurer to accept it just make sure most monsters aka the ones you can’t reason with don’t go near the town if you run into a monster or can reason with try that unless you used up all options
      Example pay for each
      Highest I’d say 100 gold pieces
      Lowest i’d say 10 bronze pieces
      You can do the math for in between but the monster hunters ones I would say is in the direct middle or lower or higher depending on what exactly the monsters are if they can be used for food tell the butchers essentially the guild is supposed to help everyone out in some way

    About what a guardian is, I think we actually already know half of it. A guardian is a hero archetype, they can be classes like fighter, mage, elf and dwarf. They learn to do dungeons, fight big and small monsters, defeat the villain's henchmen and so on. They also get the opportunity to train in AD&D like skills such as ancient runes, blacksmithing, pottery, dragon taming and potion making. We can see what they learn, the biggest missing pieces are why they are learning this stuff and what their role in the community is.
    Imagine an anime about a couple of youths in our world joining a military branch and training to become soldiers. We would know what a soldier is, why there are soldiers and how they fit into out community. However, imagine people from an alien civilization who doesn't have war were watching this anime. They would notice that a soldier is trained to kill people who in turn are trying to kill them. They would also notice that the soldiers are trained to do so in a scale that is far beyond what's applicable in a law enforcement situation. They would not understand why someone would have soldiers and what their purpose is.
    We are kind of in the same situation with Guardians. Since HGS doesn't do any world building, we don't what a guardian's role is in the community. With my example of the military training anime, we don't need that much world building since it takes place in our world, the aliens however needs it. Imagine the anime for some reason still did a lot of world building where it shows what war is and why they occur. Now the aliens would be far less confused and have a much better grasp of what a soldier is.
    Unlike the military training anime, HGS needs more world building since it takes place in a fantasy world. Unfortunately, just like the show doesn't explain how magic affects the community and everyday life, the role of a guardian in the community is also not explained. The reason we don't know what a guardian is isn't because the writers forgot or missed adding an explanation, this was an unavoidable problem once the writers failed to do world building. There is no way of knowing what a guardian is without knowing their role in the community no more than you can fully understand what a soldier is without knowing about wars and a soldiers role in them. As such, there does not exist a way for the writers to tell us this without doing some world building.
    What we are left with is what they are doing, but we have no context.

      Also this made me realize that truly - what are the Guardians supposed to be doing? The Triumverant are secret so they're not being trained to fight them, and the monsters and quests they do are for school stuuff, so .....also asides from Rose's mother, we never see any other guardians. Contrasting this to Little Witch Academia, the first episode had Akko see a performance from a famous witch and you get an idea on what Akko wants to be. But I have no idea why everyone else wants to be a Guardian asides from Rose. Heck, I don't even know why Amaryllis and Snapdragon are sent to school to become Guardians. Is it mandatory? Is it by choice? Why are people like Slime Boy and the blonde girl who got scared in the school? ough my head.

    How does an entire team of writers craft the script for this show, and FORGET to include an exposition scene where someone explains what a "Guardian" is? Because not only do we not know what a Guardian is or what they do specifically, we don't even know who or what they are "Guarding" or "Protecting." Are they servants of the Crown and must go into battle along with the standing army whenever trouble arrives? Are they elite problem solvers who are sent in like navy seals or the Thunderbirds (the marionette puppet show) to carry out special retrieval or rescue missions that no one else can handle? Or, do they go to this academy to earn a certification in Guardianship but are then thrust out into the world and must stake a claim and find employment as a Guardian on their own, of whomever or whatever may be in need of one.
    NONE of this is established.

      Honestly I think the writers either knew what a guardian was and assumed the viewer would too (a very common writing mistake), or they didn’t know what a guardian is and wanted their fans to write it for them. Either way it’s inexcusable for them to let that fly

      The maddening thing about that particular aspect is, what a "Guardian" is and does is such an important aspect of this story.
      It's part of the Title, and one of this fantasy world's defining features, and apparently an important part of this world's society, so what they are and what they do is a pretty darn important aspect of world-building, and not the kind of thing you can leave vague (like Hunters in HunterXHunter or something like that).
      *But more importantly,* since the main characters and all these other students have gone to this school to learn to become Guardians, and two important characters were Guardians in the past (Caraway and Lavender), then what a "Guardian" is and what it does is pretty darned important to character motivations, and thus character writing. Definitely not something that can be left vague or up to interpretation (since there wouldn't be a school teaching kids how to be one if it were). Oh and since the show is about these kids becoming Guardians, then what they are and what they do *ALSO* ties into story stakes, and thus story writing.
      ... When Rodriguez released those tweets saying one of the aspects of the show the "low budget" affected was writing, this was one of several counters to that. "What's a Guardian/what do Guardians do" is a core concept of the world and story; this should have been figured out before the show even got pitched or had a budget. This particular problem is 100% Rodriguez's fault.

    A quick note on _High Guardian Spice’s_ budget. By Raye’s own admission, HGS was a first for this studio. Doesn’t it make sense for Crunchyroll to not put a lot of its eggs into an untested basket? Give them a little money, and if season one turned out to be solid, they logically would’ve granted more for season two. Makes sense.
    Crunchyroll is another stereotypical big heartless corporation, yes, but it still gave Raye an opportunity that thousands of creators across the internet would KILL for: shining a light onto a complete unknown. If Raye and this studio had had their priorities straight, they could’ve made an amazing series with half the money. Other creatives have made fantastic movies on shoestring budgets because they had the shrewdness to decide what to do and what NOT to do with their limited resources. But look at HGS’ final results: no road map for the story; multiple episodes that go nowhere; inconsistent world-building and characterization; a major, apocalyptic plot element that receives next to no attention. These are not budget problems, they’re “the creators weren’t thinking” problems, and Crunchyroll giving them four times the budget wouldn’t fix those. If anything, more money might’ve made things worse.

    • @otbaht
      @otbaht ปีที่แล้ว +21

      @insulttothehumanrace3807 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      The "what is a Guardian" thing further exemplifies that lack of budget was not this show's core problem.
      Considering how important Guardians are to the setting, the characters, and the story, what Guardians are and what they do should be central to the story. That's the kind of detail the creator should have nailed down before money is even a factor; can't blame budget for that.
      Also, bad allocation of the money they did have. But that's all been covered before; hiring writers for sociopolitical reasons rather than hiring for talent, too many storyboard artists, yadda yadda... Problems having more money would not have fixed, and in fact might have made worse.

      Basically what happened, is a big company gave a literally who creator some money to make a product and he pissed it away. No more no less. It's the equivalent to giving your kid some money to go buy you a carton of milk and they buy candy with it instead. The fact that Raye completely blew their investment on a vanity project, and then had the gall to turn around, point a finger at the people who gave him the money to make his dream project, and blame THEM for its failure by claiming it wasn't good enough is honestly pretty shitty of him. In fact, I'd be willing to bet the whole reason Crunchyroll interfered and began forcing him to add violence and swearing and such was because they realized he had no actual interest in telling a coherent story and they were trying to force it on-track.

    I can accept an implied explanation of what a Guardian is if a show just wants to get to "the good stuff", even at the exact level the show does. But instead of letting the girls go out and do quests or have their slice of life adventures they keep reining them back to basically say "no, you must study and learn what a Guardian is!" and then proceed to not tell them. The show pitched the idea of the school because people would like that but then proceeded to think people wouldn't be interested in it so wrote it having nothing to do with any of the plots or even fan fuel.
    Magic classes, heck yeah! "Nope, we're not interested in that" Magic school? That can still be fun. "Nope, we leave it most episodes." Big new city, exploring that could be cool... "What are you crazy? They have to be in the school we don't like writing about!" Oh, school dorms could have some interesting challenges... "Oh yeah, definitely, too bad we won't. Man, if only we saw them more often, lol." Oh, new potential friends? That's going to be fun seeing them develop and grow past their characters clashing- "THEY'RE BEST FRIENDS NOW AND NOTHING WILL EVER CHANGE THAT!!!" ...
    Seriously, you can have the girls messing around with magic in their backyard and still get the same antics.
    What if Harry Potter books' school setting was written as if it was waiting for 6 book for after he graduated to get to "the good stuff". Heck, even then it had more creativity in the mundane of its world... And I don't even care that much for HP!

      The difference is, is HGS tried to be positive. It tried to have a world where being gay or trans is fully accepted, it tried to have frank and positive discussions about why such things are okay, it tried to be cheerful and colorful, and it tried to have a main character who is a good person at heart. Velma is just this ugly, dark, spiteful, hate-filled world where every character is horrible, everything that happens is mean and hateful, the main character is just this cruel, mean, racist, sexist, hate-filled, nauseating little gremlin without even a shred of a redeeming factor who is, frighteningly so, just a self-insert for its creator, and really the only worthwhile thing that could happen is if a nuke was dropped and everyone died.

    There is no in world evidence that the rot is caused by new magic, but there is a fairly strong evidence that this was at least at some point intended by the writers.
    The evidence can be found at episode 7, when the guardian trainees are going into the death cave to get healing water. At some point the main gang escapes crab monsters and the following dialog takes place:
    Parsley: Why would a Travor (the crab monsters) be evil?
    Sage: The well was dry, maybe without magic they mutated.
    Later when the girls escape the death dungeon with some healing water and heals a rot infected tree, we have following dialog:
    Sage: "It's healed, but what caused the rot in the first place?"
    Thyme: "I don't know, but the healing water's drying up has to be connected."
    Sage: "Is the level of magic in the earth fading?"
    Thyme: "I think so and I plan to stop it!"
    Combine this with Sage in an earlier episode while talking to Neppy Cat (in his normal cat form) and implying that when you use magic, you draw it from the earth. The difference between old and new magic in this context is that new magic is more powerful and has no cost to the user, meaning that new magic users can draw many times the amount of magic an old magic user can. So, with new magic people can and will draw far more magic from the earth than before and if the level of magic in the earth fades, healing wells dry up, monsters mutate and the rot becomes a thing.
    Now, there is no actual in world evidence that the new magic is draining magic faster than what the earth can replenish. For all we know as far as in world evidence goes, even the increased use of magic caused by new magic can still be just a drop in the sea and instead the rot comes from the fire creature in episode 9 and 12 and the machinations of the Triumvirate. However, it seems unlikely that this is what the writers went for. I can not imagine the writers setting up the whole thing with magic draining the earth, new magic being possible to be used at far greater quantity than old magic and then just go "nope, that has nothing to do with anything". That said, I can imagine the writers forgetting about it or abandoning the idea later on.

    • @WhiteManOnCampus
      @WhiteManOnCampus ปีที่แล้ว +9

      They definitely abandoned the idea once one of the writers (probably the showrunner) latched onto making old and new magic into allegories for conservative and liberal ideologies. New magic has to be fundamentally better, with no drawbacks, because they can never admit that the ideology that helps comprise their worldview and identity could ever have negative points or even be dangerous to the world as a whole.

    • @12fuzzyrats
      @12fuzzyrats ปีที่แล้ว +10

      With everything you pointed out both in this comment and your worldbuilding comment, HGS has the potential to be interesting in the hands of competent writers with what was already set up (granted a few changes are made here and there). Imagine this, the reason the role of the guardians is never explained is because the rulers of that world don't want the people, including the students, to know the truth. The purpose of new magic is to further their control of everyone by making them abandon their connection to the earth and traditional values.
      The rulers of that world know about the rot and what's causing it and the guardians are their way to distract everyone from it. Meanwhile, the group we believe to be the bad guys are actually an underground rebellion trying to save everyone and Mandrake gets punished by them for pushing the cat girl to the side of the guardians through his arrogance (and he could potentially be a traitor to the rebellion and intended for the cat girl to join the guardians to increase their numbers).
      Although if Mandrake was just arrogant, he could have a character arc where he makes up for his actions and brings the main 4 to the truth and brings back the cat girl.
      Also, a clarification on why the rulers are intentionally vague about guardians, it could be established that in the past the guardians did have a clear role as protectors of their people. When corruption took control of civilization the rulers started to change what being a guardian meant so that a guardian went from being a protector to basically, a hired gun. The ethics teacher at the academy being a demon could also be very intentional as she could slowly be corrupting the minds of the students (this would also explain why they seem to keep trying to kill the students and shame those who point out that the assignments are unreasonably dangerous).
      Idk, this was just me playing around with what we got. lol
      Side note, I honestly think the art style of the characters is kind of ugly. There's just something very off about their pseudo-anime character designs.

    • @Crystalgate
      @Crystalgate ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@WhiteManOnCampus What you are describing took place before the death cave trial. The problem is that Sage one episode later reverts to her "I'm so anxious about using new magic" phase and it's written as if we're supposed to think that Sage is in her right, meaning that the writers likely forgot about the conservative allegory they earlier made. We can't really get away from the fact that the writers in episode 4 (where they made the conservative/liberal allegory) implied that being anxious about new magic is unwarranted while in the next episode they implied that using new magic is the "easy way".
      What makes me think the writers abandoned the idea that new magic causes the rot is that they in episode 11 suddenly decided that new magic is less stable than old magic, a drawback that is not needed if new magic causes environmental disasters, and that in episode 12 you could suddenly combine new and old magic to cast an even more powerfuller spell than with new magic alone despite earlier implying that the teachers could see no reason to even bother with old magic.

Regardless, I've seen many good ideas posted that are vastly different from each other and that tells me that the writers simple didn't really do anything with their idea. I feel like the reason why magic and guardians aren’t explained is that the show relied way too heavily on tropes. It assumes that since audiences are familiar with magical warriors in other stories, it can just breeze past the necessary worldbuilding that would explain this stuff. Guardians are basically DnD adventurers who go on quests, which the writers expect us to know based on what we’ve seen in other fantasy works. Similarly, magic does whatever it typically does in the fantasy genre, hence why it barely gets explored.

    • @frankwest5388
      @frankwest5388 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Which leads to another problem of just assuming what your audience understands from tropes. See even if you assume your audience just gets what you mean, it doesn’t really help much often, because it can still contradict with your world building
      Like adventurers in DND are for the most part not taught to be adventurous. Sure some do have training in their field from other sources, like general wizard school or knight training. Or are entirely self taught and improvise as they go along. Which explains why they all have such random skill sets. It is largely an unorganized occupation after all.
      But by making it a school and requiring licenses, you run into the issue that now there must be a system that backs the warriors and to a degree dictates their actions and directions.

    • @d.j.mulcahy1657
      @d.j.mulcahy1657 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@frankwest5388 A possible solution would be to axe the school setting. Not only is it unnecessary, but it would probably lead to better worldbuilding. Instead of the girls going to school to learn about being adventurers, they could join a guardian guild run by the teachers, where they travel to different villages and fight monsters. In fact, Treasure Hunt, the animated short that inspired High Guardian Spice, was simply about Rosemary going on a dungeon crawl and finding loot.

    • @frankwest5388
      @frankwest5388 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@d.j.mulcahy1657 well at that point you are making a completely different show.
      But that is part of the problem of having such an unorganized mess of a series.
      Because nothing has any real focus and is thought out, removing or focusing on any element would make the show something completely else in a weird ship of Theseus kind of thing
      Wanne save the show by focusing on the school aspect?
      That means dropping the DND classes and adventure parts that make up a part of the show
      Wanne focus on the adventure and as such roll bad the school?
      Sounds good but also like another show
      Remove the grand epic and instead focus on moral/lesson of the week edutainment content?
      Again something completely different.
      Drop everything and make it the Amerlilys solo hour?
      Arguably the right move to do but also once again different show.
      When proposing a “fix” for the show the first thing people tend to bring up is one concept they find interesting and focus on that one specifically. But that would change the show altogether.

      To make a point of comparison, My Hero Academia is a show about super heroes, something that most people will have at least some passing knowledge about how they work in fiction. But My Hero Academia lays out very meticulously how super heroes work in this setting. How the education and training for them works. How they function in the legal system. What the regulations are about super heroics. How they are viewed by the public and fit in the broader culture. How super heroes generally get their powers. It doesn't just assume "Oh, everybody knows what a super hero is. I don't need to explain how they work in this setting."
      Little Witch Academia, which is basically what this show wants to be (a show about a group of girls at a magical school, impulsive and spunky lead character who isn't too bright but makes up for it with wide-eyed innocence and enthusiasm, aimed at a young audience while tackling some darker themes, slice of life with hints of a long-running plot), isn't quite as detailed on this front, but they do explain what witches do and how they integrated into the culture and history of the world. It does assume that you probably don't need to be told that a witch is a woman who can do magic, but they do explain what their role has been in the show's setting. They don't assume that cultural knowledge of witches is a substitute for worldbuilding.

How that would mean Caraway's gender-change magic was "bad" magic (which could be construed as "gender changes are bad"), and would mean the school was ignorant at best and evil at worst, none of which they were willing to have since they seem desperate to have the school and its staff as infallibly good as humanly possible.

  • @cts1234567

    The whole thing about if guardians are paid is a good point to make about world building, we as people expect a job or quest to pay because of the fact that is how it works in real life and videogames, but what if guardians didn't get paid. What I mean by that is what if guardians instead get "paid" by selling off the monster-bits/loot to people who make potions like in Zelda BOTW/TOTK the stronger the monster you kill the stronger the parts are and the more they could have been sold for, so killing a dragon means you can sell off the parts of it for way more then you could a giant spider, it would then add an interesting bounty system for old magic as if in, do you take a job that pays up front but they keep the loot but you don't have to deal with selling it or you can keep the loot but are expected to take care of all the smaller details of a job. Like what do you eat, do you wait for a monster to show where they have been spotted or go out and hunt/track it, and how do you bring the loot back to be sold and what can you do to keep "poachers" away from your loot.
    This could have been explained in the show and add a new magic old magic dynamic, old magic uses monster parts for potions like in your abridged show and also for some spells maybe, but new magic allows for a spell to be cast instantly and to the degree you want, potions are still used to save magic for healing and such, but it causes a market crash in the value of monster-bits. This leads to upfront payment being the preferred option now and requires Rosemary and Sage to be explained about the situation in an organic way, as everyone thinks they are crazy to hunt monsters for their parts and we the audience are then told on how the old and new dynamics that exists works by them and Parsley and Thyme, or even Caraway who tells Rosemary that isn't how monster hunting works now, and that they are paid upfront and the monster parts are mostly disposed of unless they are rare like dragon parts.

    I believe the problems with HGS started with the fact that CR never polled its audience (particularly paying customers like myself) to ask if we would like to see an original Anime made by them. I wouldn't have necessarily down voted it, but it would've been nice to have been asked first since I and many others felt we were supporting Anime by supporting a legal streaming site like CR.
    It then went on to make a huge deal about their "diverse" creative team behind HGS while what we did see of the show was mostly uninspired concept art. How is your original anime different from the things it initially got compared to - like Little Witch Academia? They never really sold us on the strength of the project. There was never a "Yes this looks kind of silly or derivative, but please give us a shot, it's our first try at anime of our own and we want your feedback on how we did!" It had a very troubled production on top of that with most of the known crew being relatively inexperienced with animation.
    The series could have received far better PR if they had just told the audience this anime may be rough, but give it a shot ok? It would also have benefitted from at least a couple more experienced animators or story board artists being on hand.
    We in the anime community are no strangers to budget anime. I love Fushigiyuugi the Mysterious play and some of its reused animation or cheap outs are laughably bad. Trigun was so short on budget and time, PREVIEWS for the next episode were rushed and unfinished. We're also no strangers to diversity in animation on either side of the pond - heck, many of the most famous voice actors in animation are Females like the voice of Goku, or, over in American shores can you tell me how many of your most beloved characters don't physically match what's on screen? My favorite voice actor for Sonic the Hedgehog to THIS DAY is Jaleel White (Yes, Steve Urkle from Family Matters) and finding out that HE was the voice of Sonic really surprised me. Mainly because I was familiar with the dorky persona from Family Matters, but Sonic was the coolest thing to me. It even got me into "voice chasing" which has lead to a number of other examples of VAs with wide and varied careers and amazing talents. In short, I don't care who's behind the scenes as long as what I get as the actual product is good.
    Ultimately, I believe it was the backlash during production combined with likely mismanagement of what funds they did have that lead to HGS being buried and forgotten.

    Anywho, yeah the world building in the show is pretty bad, especially since there’s numerous fantasy tropes that if utilized properly, could have made it a decent watch.
    The Guardians getting paid actually reminds of the manga scene in Demon Slayer where Tanjiro (who grew up poor) receives his first pay and he’s confused about the whole thing. Then one of the other characters confirms, “Yeah we get paid, you didn’t know that?” But, DS does show the Corps is run by an old, wealthy family and they have numerous benefactors who want to support the Corps. Even the villain is shown working within the economy to fund his goals.
    In HGS……. Yeah, how does this all work? Surely the numerous drug rings aren’t the only prevalent and viable markets in this universe.

He pissed their investment away on a self-insert vanity project, and then he turns around and blames them for not giving him enough money and not giving him complete freedom over the project, when in reality HE is to blame for letting the scope of the project balloon far beyond its budget and not being able to adapt a story to studio mandates? Studio mandates, I might add, that weren't even all that restrictive or unreasonable: "it's a fantasy story about warriors so add some violence" and "it's a fantasy world about young adults so add some swearing" aren't exactly the kind of things that would ruin a project.

    Y'know the funny thing? My OU has people called guardians too. After some time I decided how I wanted them to be and stuck with it.
    Basically as an experiment God appointed an archangel to be the elder guardian of Earth, whilst 2 angels, Solis and Luna were assigned to his assistance as midguardians.
    Ignis, Aquae, Terra and Ventus, the beings imbued with elemental power would defend the planet as guardians (no prefix).
    Overtime, the guardians and midguardians had children with humans, and their powers mixed in all sorts of strange ways, leading to newer, more complex guardians being born, and given the same task of doing their part to drive back the forces of evil as superheroes.
    There was...one other person. Not a guardian. Something vile to the core. A being of pure darkness gained sentience and mainfested a spawn after consuming Luna. That child became known as the antagonist of the guardians, Tenebris Umbra, and its spawn would slowly spread across the planet, dubbed the children of Umbra. If they win, Earth, the last spark of life in the entire galaxy, will be suffocated by darkness.
    I'm just using this as an excuse to explain my guardian lore, but it loops back around to being relevant because at least I'm not afraid to do so.

    There is an EPIDEMIC of people who are unable to accept or give criticisms to things they enjoy and it really saddens me. I wish people had a more open minded view on criticism and its purpose. There's nothing WRONG with enjoying something that's flawed, and a lot of the times, these flaws can be ENDEARING, or in some rare cases, elevate the piece beyond it's surface level. It's a big factor that makes art compelling to me, personally. Seeing the way an artist can fumble with their ideas and execution is learning process, not something necessarily done out of malice.
    A lot of the media that I have a great love for is extremely flawed, and I enjoy discussing these things and understanding WHY they are flawed, if they could be done better, if I might enjoy it more or less due to those things, and so on. I love to understand why I do and don't enjoy certain pieces of media. I'm of the opinion that if you truly love a piece of work, you can accurately pick it apart all day long - "If you can't write an hour long hit piece on your favorite anime, it's not REALLY your favorite anime" type beat. A lot of criticism as a whole stems from passion, or strong emotion towards a work.

    This was after the fighting teacher guy revealed there would be only one winner for the trials. Parsley felt bad about winning over Parnell (she felt like he did more work) and the teacher says something about how she could be disqualified in order to forfeit the trophy. Knowing this she lands the hammer on Aster while he was insulting someone, not over anger but rather so she can be disqualified and give Parnell the victory over her.

    Now granted, I haven't watched the show, but from how the courses sounds I'd assume a 'guardian' is like a DnD character. Exploring around, slaying monsters, helping people, that kinda stuff. And the artistic courses would be there to make sure these adventurers don't turn into murder hobos, and glyph classes are to give them knowledge that might save them later. Again, just guessing as I haven't watched the show, I'm just here for the commentery and laughs.

    The other type of reddit oddity of HGS fan's levels of love for a show only being able to be measured by how much they can hate a TH-camr is one that I will never understand... I assure you, fellow HGS fans, there isn't a "enable brainwash" button on these critical look videos, and you don't need to make something out to be perfect for your fandom love to be validated. That’s when a certain something called "personal taste" comes into play, speaking as someone who really really isn't into Arcane.
    Being critical and thinking about it is what I love doing for any piece of media I'm a fan of. Something I feel I can't be allowed to do if these types of HGS fans are the ones I meet. It doesn't seem like a lot of fun if the only conversation allowed to happen is "I like this show" "Yes, I agree" "..." "..." *repeat with no explanation of specifics*

    I know that the whole so-called "magic system" featured in HGS is supposed to be allegorical for "conservatism" or "Old Magic" and how it's "inefficient in the modern era and that's what makes it bad" vs. "progressivism" or "New Magic" and how it's "the efficient and sparkly new thing that everyone is supposed to be on board with and you're just a dinosaur if you disagree" but, from a narrative perspective, I feel as though the writers/producers kind of...shot themselves in the foot with this concept.
    Now, granted, it's been a hot minute since I've last consumed *ANY* HGS content from anywhere, but if memory serves, it's implied that "New Magic" is what's causing "The Rot" to take place. *NOT* "Old Magic."
    If the showrunners wanted to include a narrative uplifting their personal, progressive beliefs/ideals and how they believe that society would be better ran under these beliefs/ideals, then WHY, pray tell, would they insinuate that "New Magic" (Progressivism) causes "The Rot"?
    Are the writers actually *THIS BAD* at doing their jobs when it comes to keeping these things consistent?

    Even the two dudes starring in it point out how lame or stupid some plot points or character motivations or the acting in general but they still love the show and so do I

    I feel like the "what's a guardian?" question is a great example of poor writing and/or planning. Like would we be as confused if they were called soldiers, adventurers, or mercenaries? Guardian sounds so grandiose and what they teach the kids doesn't mesh well with the actual definition of "defender, protector, or keeper". Are they supposed to protect the peace like police officers? Why would defenders take up quests to collect magic water? What does an elite school for mercenaries have arts and crafts classes but can't help teach a kid how to use an axe because he's too skinny? The writers thought that the audience would be able to pick up what a Guardian is, but added all this extra stuff so they no longer matched the actual definition.

    Bruh I just realized I could explain what a gaurdian is much better than the show ever did. Considering this is a DnDish world with magical races and shit, gaurdians must be the adventurers of the world. They get paid by doing quests commissioned by the people, which are regulated by the triad, and are basically mercenaries in that regard. They must also have to undergo an approval process to accept a quest based on previous history and credentials they have accrued through their career as a gaurdian.
    But that's just my fanfiction! A fanfiction better than the shows explanation!

    I think the closest real world comparison to a guardian is probably a monk, or some other similar religious thing. They're a group of people who may or not get paid, study a lot of varying things that may or may not be useful, and most of what they do is based more so off of tradition than moral correctness, or benifit to society, or even really their own beliefs (the bible doesn't say anything about monks at all).
    I haven't seen the show, but based on how you talk about it, I'm willing to bet that this is a coincidence and not intellegent commentary about tradition.

    • @jendoe9436
      @jendoe9436 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well, most monasteries usually had some form of income source or ability to be semi-self sufficient. Alcohol that’s hops and barley based was actually a common product of monasteries because it was usually healthier and more fulfilling than water, and people would actually pay for it.
      Depending on the order, some monks either would be very intellectual or theology based, while others were very community service oriented, then the mix in between. Overall, they did require some upkeep and help from the community but it was a mutual benefit as the monastery could continue to run and the community had a group of intelligent and religious they could turn to for help.

    So, a guardian goes to school to learn to fight and art, but in the show its stated they go to school to later become a guardian, so does that mean the purpouse of HGA is is to be for the sake of being? aka you go to become a guardian by being a guardian because of studying how to be a guardian?
    Also i always though new magic is specifically never shown as efficient perse, its literally the "brute force" way of doing magic because of a virtually infinite source of energy for any spell, which is a basic inference even thou the show kinda fails to explain it, it really is only efficient due to the total lack of information the show has about how the stones are made and a lack of an explanation on the method and reasoning of old magic.
    The more i think about it the more it annoys me how easy it would be to fix the fucking magic system by deleting sage aunts and giving a couple of basic explanations :T even the seeming contradiction about sage mom "giving back to earth" can just be fixed by explaining that more costly spells in old magic cant be solely supplied by the mage own energy and so they have to drain it from the sorrounding, and so, measures like "giving back" exists to prevent rotlike effects on the sorrounding, Therefore new magic is just forcefully prepackaged concentrated ambient energy which is the connection to the rot. And mixing new and old is just using old magic efficient and resilient techniques with new magic extreme energy output. Easy aint it? but propaganda goes first i guess

    Hoooooo boy, when they tried to categorize the magic into new and old, how is it that HGS criticals know that new magic begins and ends at terraspheres but a fan didn't?
    Also, I agree that runes have been implied to be the old magic way of casting and I can accept that, but if I were really to nit pick some things surely unravel. Like drawing the runes themselves is inherently magical, combining them later seemed to have nothing more than surface level effects, and it still didn't completely negate new magic. Is this the HGS method of using a bunch of electric fans to power a wind turbine, or Futurama's dropping a block of ice into the ocean to "slow down global warming"? Can there possibly be a way to draw a rune with a Sphere without even combining it or does it automatically combine it every time, in which case why is it a learned skill? The only new and old difference seems only to be casting methods seeing as it's been said that they're not excluded from doing any spell, it's just the work effort that's supposedly different (I mean, Sage still actively needs to learn it by the end of the series, she only combined it with her crutch method type, and it's been a very active struggle), so are there other methods to casting magic beyond "old" and "new"?
    Also, for fun, here's a list of all the other magics that weren't categorized, in the post or in the show. Long comment, I guess.
    Race magic differences and race exclusive magics (unless the show just wants to admit already that they're just basically humans with a height difference 🙄), animal specific magic (you saying the Trixies used human magic?), witches (are they just what humans who can cast even one spell are or is there a greater difference?), humans who can't even cast magic (is it a learned thing or is there a reason why? Can terraspheres help? Can they even use magic items like potions or enchanted swords?), magic areas like the healing springs and fairy woods, shapeshifters (race or magic?), magic buffs (first episode protection magic is mentioned, is this a forever thing even without a Sphere?), spark spells (can they only be cast by a terrasphere? And how the heck were they made?), Immortal beings like the Triad and if they have specialty magic, heck, do the Guardians have specialty magic or skills that they're taught exclusively at the school? Because I'm sure they would have nothing else going for them to get hired by local rulers that any other well trained person can give them or any one else who likes questing and just didn't need to go to their school for. Unless this really is free labor, in which case would the Guardians look down on people who actually want to get paid for their crafts and effort instead of being "paid in exposure" like them and having a hero complex? I'd rather call in the local knights just as well trained than to write to some far off Guardian who probably didn’t even know what the situation was before yesterday, thanks. That's even true if it is a paid job, considering the knights would still be a public service thing, why should I pay extra for some random dude there’s a hundred more of? They're not exactly roaming as an army.
