Until Dawn was backed up with Sony that’s the main reason why it was polished and high production all the time. I’m pretty sure if they had Sony help the whole time, the other problems you had wouldn’t be that bad at all.

I feel like everything doesn't compliment each other in their recent games like it did in Until Dawn. Like I think a good example is Abi's first chase scene in the Quarry, the setup is solid but the actual direction of the chase is just terrible. It's the first introduction to the monster and you're in its natural habitat, it could have been an Emily in the Mines moment but instead they decided to give Abi like 3 QTEs for the entire chase and the option to randomly climb a tree at mach slug which just highlights even more how she's not in real danger.

Something that helped me love the layers to Until Dawn, is that beside the interpersonal relations, and the ancient supernatural that's the twist, part of that final monster is one of their own making, intentionally or not (insert 'its just a prank, han' here). It's hard to recapture a formula like that with a new premise without it getting old, but I feel like it should be possible. They're obviously trying and I'm full glad they are. Like you said, some of the games each have their moments. Now it's the art to try and get enough time on that dev clock to not rush it to death, that way maybe performance also improves lmao

Something that bugs me: part of the reason why the characters look much worse in the Dark Pictures games is that most of them are modelled on a certain person, but they are voiced and motion-captured by a different person. Only Conrad, Andrew, Rachel and Kate are voiced, mo-capped and modelled on the same actor (because they're the big name for each game). I despise that approach, it almost always ends up looking cheap. The Casting of Frank Stone isn't any better than the Dark Pictures games, but at least the characters look better and like real people cuz they went the Until Dawn/The Quarry route (which hopefully they will stick to going forward).

I’d have to disagree about the remaster of until dawn. Some of the new scenes are fine but I’m real upset with how badly they fucked up the sound design for a game that was already really highly regarded. Updated visuals are great or whatever but it’s the same as when movies started only making prequels and TV started making only spin offs of stuff that has already been done really well then remade until it’s hot garbage series material. It’s a huge money grab on a title that already did really well because their last few endeavours really didn’t do well at the end of the day. It feels like recuperation of losses to be honest.

ok but in my opinion the quarry actually improved with one thing you mentioned here, and that is the characters and their personality. Every character in that game had a very clear personality and natural-feeling dialogue. because... let's be real with ourselves here, the dialogue in Until Dawn wasn't always STELLAR, especially not at the beginning when the characters were still being set up and introduced to us. I'll never get over how Beth went from "Hannah! 😨" to "Where 🤖is🤖my🤖sister🤖going🤖?" in the same sentence, or the whole conflict between Jessica, Matt, Michael en Emily at the start... I haven't met a single person who didn't get slightly confused about those interactions. The Quarry gave us dialogue and character interactions I could see me and my friends having too, the goofing off especially being a part of why I feel that way. It feels more natural, is what I'm saying... but it really feels like in the Quarry that's all they put their focus on. Right after the radio shack scene, when the mystery of the werewolf finally gets revealed and shit is supposed to get REAL scary, it just...... doesn't deliver. There IS no real horror in the Quarry. It's like, entry level horror for people who can't play more intense horror games. It's ALL character and no plot/suspense. You can make the most charming characters, but if you don't put them in a coherent situation, that's all they'll be. THAT is what Until Dawn did right!

  • @MelvaCross
    @MelvaCross 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +12

Supermassive's games need three things: compelling mystery, likeable characters, and well written branching paths. Until Dawn did its mystery and characters so well that they struggled to follow it up. The Quarry did a great job with making the choices matter, and the cast was extremely likeable. House of Ashes was solid all the way through. But these games unveiled their mysteries way too quickly. Little Hope had an intruiging mystery, but the characters were extremely boring, not to mention the cheap ending.
I hope the second season of Dark Pictures is a step up in writing and game stability.

In my opinion, another big factor in why the games they made after Until Dawn just don't live up to it is not only the writing, but the acting. The acting in Until Dawn in phenomenal, meanwhile the acting in every game they made after that ranges from awful to good, but rarely anything stellar. I'm going to chalk that up to the fact that Sony gave Supermassive a big budget, but actors such as Rami Malek, Hayden Panettiere, and Brett Dalton truly bring their respective characters to life and make them so memorable. I'm not sure if it's the direction, the actors, or both, but there have not been many similarly memorable performances compared to the characters I previously mentioned.

My top list of Supermassive games that I played so far
    1. House of Ashes: I really enjoyed the mystery surrounding the creatures, all of the main characters were sympathetic or had nice character arcs
    2. Until Dawn: Same thing I can say about it, it's their scariest game, however while the twist was interesting, it didn't really make sense plot wise. I also didn't like that there were too many characters, therefore some barely got any screen time
    3. Devil in Me: Good cast of characters, not too many of them (which is good), but the villain had inconsistent powers and felt nearly unstoppable, I liked the different endings and the mystery though. I also appreciate how they tried to improve the gameplay, but it was a little buggy
    Mediocre
    4. Man of Medan: Not the best cast of characters, some annoying, some uninteresting. The plot twist undermines the whole story, except for some character developments here and there.
    The bad
    5. Little Hope: The biggest wasted potential in the series, a plot twist that makes what happened in the story completely irrelevant, interesting mystery that only exists in one character's imagination
    6. The Quarry: Half of the characters were likable, the other half seemed lifeless. The worst scenes in the whole series and the dumbest decisions by the characters, laughably bad dialogues at times

Imo it was lightning in a Bottle, Everything was near perfection from the cast to the monster, the set up to the pay off, i think with horror especially once you've done something you have to give it time befor you can do it again, Man of Maiden was poor as they failed on almost every level and whilst it wasnt bad it didn't even come close to untill dawn, other than conrad i didn't really like any of the characters amd whilest the idea of the monstere being hallucinations playing with my freind for my first playthrough ruined the experience as we figured it out from the pro log and basically saved eachother, if i was in their shoes i would have given it a few years to work on a new game, until dawn wasnt perfect as their is a lot more i woild have liked to see such as Matt and Jess in the mines and i would take that into account and make a new game with the flaws in mind, instead i think they tried to capatalise on the success of untul dawn too quickly and failed to live up to the hype

Loved Until Dawn & the Quary. Little Hope absolutely pissed me off. I liked House of Ashes initially, but when the truth about the enemies was announced, it made me cringe & I ended up hating it. I disagree on Until Dawn Remake... The atmosphere is worse and also the new ending is meaningless. It makes the story a lot "less" in general just to make a sequel even though the story has obviously already concluded (just like Life is Strange). Everything that people praise Until Dawn for is present in every other game besides the characters and plot which are both good. Until Dawn has much less "Your choices matter" than even Little Hope. I think it's just overrated, and people don't actually know what they want. Until Dawn's only "choices" are deaths or prevention of such.
