In my opinion, this is one of the most fascinating WW2 lectures that I've listened to on YT and I've listened to quite a few! A really interesting insight into the mindset of British conscripts and the class and tradition-dominated army that they were obliged to fit into. Don't be put off by the negative comments. If you are interested in the 'human' aspects of the experience of those who served in WW2, this lecture is well worth listening through to the end. The Q&A is as informative as the lecture.

There's nothing wrong with class and tradition. Both arise from the essential village origins of British society.
Long ago I grew up in a London which had grown out of a collection of villages which had, over time, merged into a city. Each village had a character of its own. Class? I would suggest an appreciation of and respect for other people's feelings is what I would say class is. Regretably due to the doubtful improvements of immigration, that individuality has now largely disappeared.

Well done and rather entertaining! Really makes sense after listening to the entire lecture as opposed to just the first 13 minutes.

I skipped right to 6:00 or so, getting to 18:00 painless.

Listened up to 13:17 and can't figure out the point of the lecture, other than there were a wide variety of men in the Army.

I skipped right to 6:00 or so, getting to 18:00 painless. Having been in the US Army, trust me, the diversity was mind-blowing, and must be loaded into the forefront of the mind to understand the challenges of making a united army of citizen-soldiers.

I skipped right to 6:00 or so, which made getting to 18:52 painless. Having been in the US Army, trust me, the diversity was mind-blowing, and must be loaded into the forefront of the mind to understand the challenges of making a united army of citizen-soldiers.

As we say in the military, clever enough to shoot, infantry, clever enough to use a shovel, pioneer corps, too stupid to use a shovel, you're a Physical training insructor.
But my daddy knows The Queen, you can't make me a PTI
Why didn't you say earlier, youre off to Sandhurst.

The audiences in American academic lecture appear to have no respect for others in the audience let alone those presenting the lecture. The amount of extraneous noise is appallingly rude.

Silly woman. Obviously nervous, but disrespectful to the speaker by being so silly and unprepared.
