I felt sad for him too. I'm so glad he grew up and learned the truth - that he indeed is the disciple Jesus loves. I figure the story demonstrates what can happen when teachers lose the plot and miss the point of why they're there. I don't know if you're familiar with the band, Tenth Avenue North, but the Mike in the story is the lead singer in the band. And he's the one who tells this story of when he was young.
