I use a $300 pair of bluetooth headphones, but hard-wired in (powered off) and in conjunction with SoundID Reference. I just recently got serious about mixing, so it was insane to realize how awful my headphones actually were before the correction. They have loads of bass and a massive dip in the high-mids, so when I try to turn off SoundID it just sounds like everything is underwater through them!
I am using the Trinnof for 4 years now and it completely changed my game. If i do a bad mix these days, it is because i suck,. not my room and not my speakers.

Like all my other videos, this one was made to share what i use and how i work. There has been a massive amount of questions around this box and i just wanted to share my experiences and why i use one. Happy mixing🍕
It’s a stand alone computer solely dedicated to room EQ and phase correction. I LOVE IT. If you aspire to be or are a professional, it’s not really expensive at all. What’s expensive is NOT hearing correctly in your work space. Not trusting what you hear.
I have gone deep into the room correction rabbit hole for a few years, trying out hand built corrections using RoomEQ wizard and calibrated microphones, Sonarworks, even looked seriously at building my own hardware unit. I finally threw down the bling and picked up a Trinnov. All I can say is, this thing blows Sonarworks away. The quality of the correction is not even close. Highly accurate phase correction makes transients crisp and reverbs are much, much less smeared. Listening to Gaucho is pure ear candy. Yes its expensive, I'll pay it off. IMO, if anyone is wondering or on the fence, the answer is yes, do it.
Tbh. If being in a mixing room is your profession, 6k ain't that expensive. Especially for the gains you are getting. Especially in the case of Trinnov. For professionals I would recommend spending 6k on the box versus a vintage compressor for sure. Especially if you are running multi channels.
I do feel that this topic of accurate room monitoring is so important and should be one of the first things taught when it comes to critical listening. Thanks Warren and Marc!

I use two pairs of headphones. I don't use any sort of corrective software. I'm used to the headphones and know what a good mix "should" sound like in them. My mixes are translating pretty well. I'm not saying they're good mixes. But they sound like I expect them to. The reason I use two pairs of headphones is because they have very different frequency response. I mix first in a pair of Sennheiser HD650 open-backed headphones. They give me a very clear picture of the midrange and top end. Then I switch to some really cheap Bluetooth headphones with super-hyped low end and not much high end. Once I have the mix working in both pairs of headphones, it generally means it's pretty balanced. I do have headphone correction software, but I've never found it helpful.
I’ve had an ST2 for two years now and I’m still blown away by what this box of Voodoo can do with a whole lot of FFT and other maths! Genius and an essential tool in my mind. To note, my studio was heavily treated before the ST2 and already sounded fantastic, which set my expectations low for the Trinnov being able to make it sound much better. How wrong I was.
I've been using Genelec with the GLM system for some time. Right now I have the 8351B with a small Genelec sub. GLM analyzes the room for EQ and phase. but I'm guessing not to the extent that the Trinnov can. The results can then be stored in the monitor's memory. I'm very happy with it. I have to be, because I'd have to save my pennies for a long time before I could afford the Trinnov. Lord knows I'd love to have it. Love these vids. Wish I had your ears. I use AKG K712, Focal Listen Pro and Focal Clear MG Pro headphones.
I produce with a pair of grado RS2e's and a 3" FREKVENS speaker from ikea. its a unique combo, helped me more deeply understand the relationship between different aspects of sound- more than I think I would have with a pair of studio monitors!
Using the latest Sonarworks, and it's a godsend for my bedroom studio. I see it as a way to supplement sound treatment, but also to measure what needs to be done in an untreated room. I will say though, I don't use it at full 100% because it does something weird to me. Blending back in 30-40% of the dry signal seems to sound natural but still nudge my nearfields toward a more ideal flatness.
I'm in a small room, and I've been looking for a rack unit to do just this. It's probably out of my price range for now, but this is pretty great. Also...that bass tone at the end. Butter.
Lots of comments about the price of the trinnov ST2. it is not inexpensive but it's comparable to a high quality microphone. Microphones might be sexy to look at but they only can only be used on one track at a time. When you're mixing they sit on a stand or in a cabinet and do nothing for you. The trinnov is something that will constantly be used through an entire workday whether you're mixing or tracking. A note about tracking with one. They have some ms of latency that your DAW won't compensate for so tracking DI in the control room can be an issue. However, bypassing it for an overdub isn't a problem. Or have the player use phones and you can hear what you're getting while it's going in.

I have a Trinnov ST2 and was a sonarworks user since 2019. For me, the biggest improvement over sonarworks is that imaging now sounds accurate. My sonarworks correction is similar but imaging was really terrible. I'd describe things as sounding hard left, hard right or sort of in a mound around the center. Now panning sounds really distinct. The clarity of the eq correction with the trinnov works in tendem with the improved imaging. Sonarworks with a pair of headphones and a corrected eq curve is actually similar to the trinnov as far how panning and eq clarity is perceived, in my opinion. Comparing sonarworks eq correction to trinnov eq correction on my speakers is similar but also different. It's hard to separate the imaging experience from the perception of the eq balance when switching back and forth. I should probably try it with mono source material. The ST2 with my monitors vs sonarworks with headphones comparison sounds more similar than sonarworks with monitors to sonarworks with headphones to me. I prefer the trinnov and monitors to sonarworks with phones for lots of reasons. However, after working with the trinnov I do feel that I could trust sonarworks with phones way more than I ever did before. Unexpected outcome.
😱 this is not what I wanted to hear 😬. Just upgraded to the new multichannel version of SW, which is supposed to now have phase correction (will be recalibrating my room tomorrow). I was really hoping to not have to spend $10k on the Trinnov, but if what you and Marc are saying is true I may have to bite the bullet 😩😩😩.
@@delmixedit I'm still only working in stereo and definitely considered the implications of atmos and other immersive formats. If I ever get into that I suppose I'll just mix in stereo and then fold out to the immersive positions after I've got everything where I want it. It's a bridge I have yet to cross.
I would say that the most important equipment for me is also my ATCs and my Trinnov. All other equipment I would consider optional these days. If I had known how much better the Trinnov makes my room, I would have bought it much earlier and rather sold/not bought other equipment.
The 100'ish Hz stuff is probably the Allison Effect created from floor and ceiling bounce. A sub in each of the front corners of the room would probably help with that. Phase wraps in the before measurements should be the crossovers in the speakers, although, the measurement there doesn't look like the transfer function is set quite right which is putting them at the wrong frequencies in the measurement. The Trinnov is likely using all-pass filters to "flatten" those wraps. I believe the Trinnov makes a big difference in things.
im a fan of the Trinnov.... i have best results when i work at solving bass issues first, with bass traps etc, before using a Trinnov.... if you get the room to 90% good, the trinnov will really shine.... but in a lousy room, it can potentially overdrive bass drivers, especially if you crank it! so here is a question.... what DB SPL do you set to allow the trinnov to calibrate??? i use 85 DB SPL,, its as loud as i want to go.. but sometimes some people think a studio is a party stereo, and its too loud... i use ATC 100 as a mid field, with trinnov.... its epic.
Thanks Marc,,, One of the hardest things to get right, but the most important to understand. Any one that has mixed a song they thought was perfect, and play it the first time out of the room, and it crumbles... lol... As well, when you have created a great mix room with great translation, the first time you heard really good translation, you realize its worth ;) Well, that's how I understood all the money I spent was for nothing, except experience in learning the tools. Even though I was hearing incorrectly, I still gained experience eq, comp, etc..., just not as accurately as we can actually require. Treating the room is real important before adding speaker/room correcting software.
I use Genelec 8030A with 2 8" Presonus subs and Sonarworks SoundID. Sonarworks is my savior not only for mixing but for enjoying music in general. It really clears the mud for me. Thanks Marc and Warren
4,5 k is pretty wild for most of us though. I believe you that it's great, but a lot has to happen in terms of success before one can contemplate buying an advanced room-correction tool for 4500€. But sure.. I'll buy that kind of room-correction before I buy a compressor for 4,5k.. if that's the point you're making, you made it well.
I use Yamaha HS7's and just picked up a JBL Sub. I use DT770's for my headphones. Calibrated with Sonwarworks. I also have room correction with wall hanging wood frames with wool. Is it perfect? No clue. Am I hearing everything? I hope.
Have you ever tried Dirac, I'd imagine they do very similar things but believe Dirac doesn't let you touch as many of the functions much like an Apple device. The new Active room treatment function sounds pretty incredible but wont be available on most devices for a while outside of the Storm Audio Processors.
Warren, an unrelated question! Do you have a solution for where to keep cables like XLRs TRS and guitar leads etc? Mine are wound up and in a cardboard box! Help! Thanks!
Sorry for the interruption,but sometimes I see the phase plad with the asentopes for the brick wall slope in the secuence of the 1/3 octave frequencies (e.i, 96hz, 125hz, 200hz etc) or in a unison structure
in live sound we use smaart live (theres a few other pieces of software) but do the ajdjustments to our crossovers to get each driver working together. curious that there are phase aligment issues, im no where any kind of expert or even intermedate at anylising speakers, but from dabling with pa tuning i thought when you saw those kinds of phase traces it was crossover that needed adjustment, either using delay, or sommetimes different types of filters to get them to line up.
TLDR: it analyzes the sound of a room super accurately so your ears can actually hear what's going on. Rather than the perception that everything sounds okay... Until you listen to it in another environment.

It’s the Trinnov mic itself. It’s a “3D” mic. Doesn’t come with the ST2 package, you have to buy them seperate. If you know somebody with a Trinnov mic you can borrow his/her. You just have to load in the preference from the mic(you get that when you buy one)

Time alignment and phase correction use a lot more processing power. Trinnov is a standalone system that does the dsp processing outside of the computer system you use your DAW on.
Yes, great tool and great explanation but maybe it´s important to say that if you got a 10 dB dip at 100 Hz such tools can´t do magic because after the corrections of phase and so on the energy you put in more at 100 Hz will still be chanceled out because of the room. Therefore you would need a room solution like a specific tuned absorber to avoid this drastic dip at 100 Hz.
Does it support multiple subwoofers? That’s what I use to get rid of the floor bounce dip around 100hz, but I probably need to time align with my mains.
Yes, the st2 supports two subs. I have an st2, I know it has at least 4 outputs, maybe 6 but I don't remember since I use it with two mains and one sub. I don't know how it handles time alignment with two subs and frankly I don't remember if it shows the location of my sub in the speaker position tab. What I do know is that a sine wave sweep from 20 to 150 sounds very even volume from about 30hz on up. There's a small dip at @90 hz and a little bump @ 120 hz and the "after" graph indicates this as well. Those are my biggest peaks and dips in the before tab. I have a lot of treatment in my room but it's quite assymetrical. Edit: The ST2 has 4 channels of analog I/O and 4 channels of digital I/O. In the configurations tab you can select what inputs and outputs a preset uses. All connections are XLR. I know you can use combinations of digital and analog I/O. I run mine with digital in and analog out. It has a bass management configuration where you set crossover point, etc. It profiles the subs separately from the mains.
Hi Tim, just to clarify, it does support 2 subwoofers and you can setup with bass management (managing crossovers) and it time aligns the subs too (you have four analog outputs to play with, and, 2 stereo AES outputs). The Trinnov does many great things, but, it's greatest achievement for me is the definition below 80hz. Incredible difference for me and I'm no longer guessing at the LF moves I'm making.
Love your content! 💜🙏💜 PLEASE HELP! My studio is 5.5 X 9 feet. Adams TV5. I mix facing the short wall as per recommendation. Not enough width for bass traps due to desk. Long walls have several art canvases to diffuse sound. Carpet floor. Room sounds terrible, speakers honky. I was looking into SonarWorks. Was told not to bother electronically calibrating as room isn't treated well enough. What say you? Thinking of moving to open back headphones instead, but if calibration is worth the dough, despite my terrible space, and will make a diff., then I will fork it out. Don't want to waste the money if it's not going to make enough of a difference. Can you please advise? I can't find help anywhere! 💜🙏💜

It depends on how severe your optimisation is, but, very little. Less than 32 samples for me. When tracking with it on, I don't notice it (nor do my clients).
Sonarworks doesn't do anything in the time domain. HUGE difference. Trinnov is way better. It corrects the amplitude, the phase aswell as the time alignment.

ST2 is around $5k US without the mic. Depending on where you buy it, you might be able to borrow the mic which you only need during setup. Still a lot of money.
It's impossible for most of us to pay for Trinnov. Ridiculous how pricey it is! Maybe it's worth the money but it is not possible for the average person to buy this...
The last mile is always the most expensive in any specialized field. There are three main applications where a Trinnov is super valuable tool. One is when your room ia about as well setup as you can practically achieve but an issue/issues remain. Another is having to work with the same gear in two different rooms that don't sound the same. The third is needing to work somewhat longterm in a place where remodeling isn't possible. It looks like Marc is working in a residential bedroom and not a space designed for mixing. Treatment helps but looking at his "before" graph shows just how important the last mile is to his situation.
That’s not true, it may require sacrifice but a good used car is around 5K. It depends on your priorities and what music creation and/or mixing is to you, a hobby or profession.
Both Marc and myself are professionals that yes, do have TH-cam channels, however you’ll notice my SSL, Pultec, CADAC, U47 were all there from the first video I ever did. We got our gear from making records
😂😂😂😂😂 most TH-camrs aren’t rich, and certainly not rich from TH-cam. For a professional engineer or producer one album easily pays for this. It’s all about priorities and what level of work one does.

I use Genelec 8030A with 2 8" Presonus subs and Sonarworks SoundID. Sonarworks is my savior not only for mixing but for enjoying music in general. It really clears the mud for me.

4,5 k is pretty wild for most of us though. I believe you that it's great, but a lot has to happen in terms of success before one can contemplate buying an advanced room-correction tool for 4500€. But sure.. I'll buy that kind of room-correction before I buy a compressor for 4,5k.. if that's the point you're making, you made it well.

I use Yamaha HS7's and just picked up a JBL Sub. I use DT770's for my headphones. Calibrated with Sonwarworks. I also have room correction with wall hanging wood frames with wool. Is it perfect? No clue. Am I hearing everything? I hope.
Do your mixes translate? If so then YES!

Have you ever tried Dirac, I'd imagine they do very similar things but believe Dirac doesn't let you touch as many of the functions much like an Apple device. The new Active room treatment function sounds pretty incredible but wont be available on most devices for a while outside of the Storm Audio Processors.

Sorry for the interruption,but sometimes I see the phase plad with the asentopes for the brick wall slope in the secuence of the 1/3 octave frequencies (e.i, 96hz, 125hz, 200hz etc) or in a unison structure

in live sound we use smaart live (theres a few other pieces of software) but do the ajdjustments to our crossovers to get each driver working together.
curious that there are phase aligment issues, im no where any kind of expert or even intermedate at anylising speakers, but from dabling with pa tuning i thought when you saw those kinds of phase traces it was crossover that needed adjustment, either using delay, or sommetimes different types of filters to get them to line up.
Sonarworks helped me out a bit in my small room, so I guess this box would have much more impact for professionals..
There are professionals using SW too 😉.
Yes, professionals use both Sonarworks and Trinnov
TLDR: it analyzes the sound of a room super accurately so your ears can actually hear what's going on. Rather than the perception that everything sounds okay... Until you listen to it in another environment.

It’s the Trinnov mic itself. It’s a “3D” mic. Doesn’t come with the ST2 package, you have to buy them seperate. If you know somebody with a Trinnov mic you can borrow his/her. You just have to load in the preference from the mic(you get that when you buy one)

Time alignment and phase correction use a lot more processing power. Trinnov is a standalone system that does the dsp processing outside of the computer system you use your DAW on.
Yes, great tool and great explanation but maybe it´s important to say that if you got a 10 dB dip at 100 Hz such tools can´t do magic because after the corrections of phase and so on the energy you put in more at 100 Hz will still be chanceled out because of the room. Therefore you would need a room solution like a specific tuned absorber to avoid this drastic dip at 100 Hz.
Yeah, that dip is insane. So is everything below 70 hz as well

Does it support multiple subwoofers? That’s what I use to get rid of the floor bounce dip around 100hz, but I probably need to time align with my mains.
Yes, the st2 supports two subs. I have an st2, I know it has at least 4 outputs, maybe 6 but I don't remember since I use it with two mains and one sub. I don't know how it handles time alignment with two subs and frankly I don't remember if it shows the location of my sub in the speaker position tab. What I do know is that a sine wave sweep from 20 to 150 sounds very even volume from about 30hz on up. There's a small dip at @90 hz and a little bump @ 120 hz and the "after" graph indicates this as well. Those are my biggest peaks and dips in the before tab. I have a lot of treatment in my room but it's quite assymetrical.
Edit: The ST2 has 4 channels of analog I/O and 4 channels of digital I/O. In the configurations tab you can select what inputs and outputs a preset uses. All connections are XLR. I know you can use combinations of digital and analog I/O. I run mine with digital in and analog out. It has a bass management configuration where you set crossover point, etc. It profiles the subs separately from the mains.

Hi Tim, just to clarify, it does support 2 subwoofers and you can setup with bass management (managing crossovers) and it time aligns the subs too (you have four analog outputs to play with, and, 2 stereo AES outputs). The Trinnov does many great things, but, it's greatest achievement for me is the definition below 80hz. Incredible difference for me and I'm no longer guessing at the LF moves I'm making.

Love your content! 💜🙏💜 PLEASE HELP! My studio is 5.5 X 9 feet. Adams TV5. I mix facing the short wall as per recommendation. Not enough width for bass traps due to desk. Long walls have several art canvases to diffuse sound. Carpet floor. Room sounds terrible, speakers honky. I was looking into SonarWorks. Was told not to bother electronically calibrating as room isn't treated well enough. What say you? Thinking of moving to open back headphones instead, but if calibration is worth the dough, despite my terrible space, and will make a diff., then I will fork it out. Don't want to waste the money if it's not going to make enough of a difference. Can you please advise? I can't find help anywhere! 💜🙏💜
Hi Jennifer, Room treatment is always a good idea and really helps in every way! I would do as much as you can to improve the listening experience, getting rid of excessive issues.

How much latency does it add?
It depends on how severe your optimisation is, but, very little. Less than 32 samples for me. When tracking with it on, I don't notice it (nor do my clients).

This vs SonarWorks SoundID?
Sonarworks doesn't do anything in the time domain. HUGE difference. Trinnov is way better. It corrects the amplitude, the phase aswell as the time alignment.

ST2 is around $5k US without the mic. Depending on where you buy it, you might be able to borrow the mic which you only need during setup. Still a lot of money.

It's impossible for most of us to pay for Trinnov. Ridiculous how pricey it is! Maybe it's worth the money but it is not possible for the average person to buy this...
The last mile is always the most expensive in any specialized field. There are three main applications where a Trinnov is super valuable tool. One is when your room ia about as well setup as you can practically achieve but an issue/issues remain. Another is having to work with the same gear in two different rooms that don't sound the same. The third is needing to work somewhat longterm in a place where remodeling isn't possible. It looks like Marc is working in a residential bedroom and not a space designed for mixing. Treatment helps but looking at his "before" graph shows just how important the last mile is to his situation.

That’s not true, it may require sacrifice but a good used car is around 5K. It depends on your priorities and what music creation and/or mixing is to you, a hobby or profession.

Trinovv is for rich TH-camrs
Both Marc and myself are professionals that yes, do have TH-cam channels, however you’ll notice my SSL, Pultec, CADAC, U47 were all there from the first video I ever did. We got our gear from making records
😂😂😂😂😂 most TH-camrs aren’t rich, and certainly not rich from TH-cam. For a professional engineer or producer one album easily pays for this. It’s all about priorities and what level of work one does.
