    Nice I like this. I do a California patch all the time. The place I work for Manages 530 Rentals and let me tell I see my share of door knob thru the walls. And fist holes in the wall too. I'm going to give this a try on the next hole. Which will be in the next couple of days. I only use 5 minute mud for everything. You know those screw in anchors which work nice . Easy to install even easier to remove strong but leaves a 1/2 inch hole in the wall. 5 Minute hot mud works perfect for these holes. Nice Video keep them coming.

      Whenever I have to fix a doorknob hole, I'll try to reinforce it as best I can and put in some sort of doorstop as well just to give it a prayer lol

      he's pretty clear that this is for people who don't have the experience or equipment to do it the recommended way. In addition, trying to get someone with your credentials out to fix a hammer hole in dry wall? Good luck. I see neighbors posting on the various local sites all the time asking for advice because they can't get a callback on small jobs. So this is a fine opportunity to do what might end up being a temporary fix, but if/when it cracks a year or two down the line, the homeowners will appreciate what you do and get paid well for all the more. So be glad.

    A different way than I would do it. This seems to take a lot longer than a typical patch that I could do.

    • @MrNathaneasterling
      @MrNathaneasterling  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, I'm not sure how long it took me to do the one on camera, but it always takes longer to film something. If I were doing it as fast as possible, I could probably go from damage to painting in 30 to 45 minutes or so(maybe less, might do a video and set the camera up to just film everything and see). But I really just wanted to give people an alternative for someone who doesn't have a lot of tools or experience. If they can float, a butterfly patch or the traditional way with tape would be best practice.

    Looks easy enough. But I have a question. My wife lost her balance in the bathroom, and pulled the towel rod anchors from the wall. Left a hole about double your hammer blow. Would this patch be strong enough for the screw in anchors to remount the towel bar?

    • @MrNathaneasterling
      @MrNathaneasterling  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, if I were you, I would put the first 2 pieces of tape on the back (top and bottom) and screw a piece of wood going up and down behind the drywall but over the tape and then continue with the repair by completing the tape on the back and doing the rest of the repair. Just be sure to position the wood so that you can screw your towel rack directly into the wood on the back of the patch.
      I hope that made sense. Also, be sure to mix your mud thin enough to inject it. If it feels too thick, just mix up some more until you're happy with it.
      Let me know if you have any more questions.

    • @MrNathaneasterling
      @MrNathaneasterling  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I would say that's probably due to the type of tape you are using, I believe I use Scotch brand tape but if you go with something advertised as heavy duty that may help. The other thing would be that if there is some sort of residue on the wall that needs to be cleaned off or if your paint is very glossy you could also try to scuff the wall for the tape to stick better since you will need to paint anyway it shouldn't matter if it's scuffed a bit.
      I hope that helped let me know if I can give you any more advice 😁👍

      @MrNathaneasterling  ปีที่แล้ว

      Depending on the size, at the end of the video, I show a bigger one that I backed with cardboard, and I would be hesitant to go bigger than that without adding wood to the back, you would need to add that after putting on the first strips of tape to the back. It's kind of hard to explain. But I would suggest a butterfly patch, I just uploaded a video on that today. If you want to check it out, here's the link.

      I still have this example board and it's perfectly fine more than a year and a half later, I've also done this patch in my own house the same way that has been there for about 3 years now also just fine. The only reason drywall needs to be taped is because of drywall mud that is not setting type. The drying type mud shrinks very significantly the setting type shrinks a very small amount and only when it is setting

    • @MrNathaneasterling

      Actually I have since changed my mind and would just use the 5-minute mud for the final coat if it's a small patch like this. Spackle is easier to sand is what it comes down to but I've had better luck just using 5 minute mud and making sure it was a light coat with not much to sand 😁👍

    Very little mechanical strength. You’re relying on the the soft powdery edges of the drywall to hold the mud in place. These are the kind of patches I see in my customers homes that either their uncles friends brother inlaw did or they did it themselves. A few years later it either cracks or falls out. Then they hire me to cut it out a patch it properly. I’m not saying it will fail every time, but any expansion or contraction and the joints will fail. Drywall tape is designed to minimize joint cracking when things move.

      I put this video out there just for someone who may find it helpful in some way. Personally if I were to do this again which I probably will, I would switch the spackle out for just another layer of hot mud. Everyone in the comments always says that's not going to last but I've had a few of these patches up for years and I have all the patches from these videos and they're all fine, especially if you consider it a temporary fix until it can be repaired "correctly" but I think people would find this is a permanent fix.
