  • We took a couple of old Surge milking stalls we pulled out of a scrap pile, restored them, and put them back into use! It was pretty spectacular to milk cows finally in the parlor!

    Hi. . . I milked in a surge parlor in the early ’80s in College Place, WA. The parlor was 3 on a side setup. We willed around 150 cows. We shipped to Dairy Gold in Yakima, WA. Your dairy is very nice!

    • @vnthomas16
      @vnthomas16  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there! Growing up, I rode on the milk truck with my Dad to the Walla Walla area regularly. He had an entire milk route down there. He even picked up milk from the penitentiary dairy at one time, but that was before my time. The route as it was when I was riding pretty much stretched from Touchet all the way to Walla Walla along 12. But, he also had a shipper on the Oregon side in Umapine. That was the first dairy farm I ever worked on, in 1999. Thank you for sharing and the complements!

    I love it! Years ago I worked for a while at a 100 cow Guernsey dairy. They had a triple side open parlor. At times, I was the only one milking. I’ve milked a few cows in a similar setup. It should be marvelous for your scale.

      Hello! Yes, you don’t see many side-openers anymore, although they are still available new. When I visited Guernsey in 2012, we visited a new installation. Since starting our project, I’ve fallen in with some small dairy groups, and I think we’re going to see a resurgence in side-openers. There is one fellow on the east coast who just built a small barn, with a two stall side-opener parlor just like mine, and he built the stalls himself from scratch! Anyway, I’m glad our video was recommended to you and we’re glad you subscribed! Happy to have you along for our journey, stay tuned!

    Well Stacy, nice job on getting your parlor painted, now all you need to do is get the cows in there so they can rub all the paint off! Also, I would take that anti-kick device you have and throw it out the door. You need the big clamp that goes over the back. I tried one of those devices that you have and it came off the cow's back and hit me in the head. ;)

    • @vnthomas16
      @vnthomas16  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ve never had a problem with that kind of anti-kicker. I’ve used them in every parlor I’ve worked in. Luckily, we haven’t had to use ours yet! The big clamp type probably work better, but you’d have to climb up to the cow platform to put it on. With the “C” style, you don’t even have to leave the pit! I guess that’s why you only see the “C” style in raised parlors.

    Love this whole process! Could you remind me, with your calf sharing, are you separating the calves at all now? or in the future? How much milk are you getting? Does either cow give more consistently? Your videos sort of read like a more technical and well cow version of James Herriot. Very easy listening. You could do a children's book with lovely illustrations, sort of like Moses the Kitten. (I always look for the kid angle, long time littles teacher and granny). Maybe sometime you could be a field trip destination for folks/kids.... Partly history of milking, partly healthy food and livestock for the future. Keep up the good work.

    • @vnthomas16
      @vnthomas16  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We are calf sharing. Currently, the babies are with their mommas 24/7, but we may start separating the calves at night here in a few weeks. Right now, we are getting about 20-25# per cow per day that we can keep. I would say Buttercup is a little more consistent, only because Rose is lazy in the mornings, and sometimes when we go out to do the morning milking Rose is still lying down, so Dodie hasn’t had a chance to nurse yet. When that happens, we get 20+ pounds from Rose just from the morning milking.

    Clover Mountain Dairy I Admire your Hard Work you and your family have put into building your Dairy, few families today are willing to work as hard as you on a day by day schedule. I hope you are able to hire someone to help when the work load gets to much for you and your wife. Also you might have Dairy gold and Carnation Dairy Corporations knocking on your door to sell out, that happened a lot in the late 50s and early 60s when so many family Dairies sold out, could not find younger family members to take over.

    • @vnthomas16
      @vnthomas16  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes indeed. The first big demise of small dairies in this area was in 1956 when the local processors switched from accepting milk in cans to requiring bulk tanks. Then of course you had the federal dairy buyout program in the 1980s that put out a lot of the small farms. And of course like you said, many of the children didn’t want to take over the farm.

    Did you guys have plans drawn up of the milking parlor or did you just free hand build it as you went ? Specifically how wide is it , long , and how deep is the pit

    • @vnthomas16
      @vnthomas16  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We had the stalls from the beginning, so we worked around that. The room is 12’x24’ because it just fit neatly into building everything in 12’ increments. (We find for the best utilization of building materials to use numbers divisible by both 2 and 3). I think we could have fit it into a room 11’ x 18’ if we really had to, but really appreciate the extra space. The pit is 34 1/2” deep, which we found works well for the both of us. We’ve both milked in shallower and deeper pits. You can make it whatever depth suits you the best I suppose. The cow platform overhangs the pit by 4” which provides a nice “toe space” to make it more comfortable. The pit is 16 1/2’ long which was determined by the stalls, and I’m not exactly sure, but I think it’s about 4 1/2’ wide. Thanks for watching!

    • @vnthomas16
      @vnthomas16  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Surge miller’s are great! Unfortunately their use is not really conducive to milking in a raised parlor, as to use the Surge, you have to put a surcingle over their back, and then lift the milker up to the cow platform and then bring it back down. A pail milker that just sits on the floor just works better in this situation. Thanks for watching!

      If you’re handy with metal working, you can build them yourself. Otherwise just start asking around at every place that was an old dairy. That’s how we found ours. They were in a neighbor’s barn and we salvaged them. Paid $150 for each stall.

    No, no, no, you don't need a pipeline for a small dairy, it will just waste milk and they are hard to clean. I sold mine and went to milking with floor milkers like the one you have using NuPulse vacuum-driven claws. Much better system IMHO. :)

    • @vnthomas16
      @vnthomas16  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      For our small herd, the bucket is fine, but if we add to our herd, we may look into a pipeline. Even so, I’ll still use my NuPulse claws.

    I just started using my tandem stanchion. 2nd time one of my cows stepped one of her back feet over the pit edge. She was reaching for a fallen pellet. Her head reached over and rear end shifted opposite way.. she sustained a 2" x 1/2" scrape, hair off. Now I'm keeping an eye on her leg.
    Have you ever had that happen?
    Mine is Not surge brand.

    • @vnthomas16
      @vnthomas16  ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry to hear that. No, we’ve never had that happen. Our stalls are set in from the edge 4 or 5 inches. Maybe you can install a curb? That’s common in milking parlors.

    • @robbinedick9930
      @robbinedick9930 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@vnthomas16 We went right the next day to put in a curb. We couldn't have any accidents happening! And think you'll get for your quick response. Love watching you guys!

    on the side closet to wear you stand i took and mixed op my own cement and made about a 2 inch high ridge about 4 inches wide cause i had problems with some cowws slipping off the edge. and even after i did that i still had a few slip off. and they will poop sooner or later.

    • @vnthomas16
      @vnthomas16  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      We went back and forth on a curb. From a milking perspective, we like not having it, but from a safety standpoint, we see it’s value. Ultimately, we went against it. We did set our stalls back from the edge a little extra, and with the girth of the cows, their feet end up being about 18” from the edge. Hopefully this is enough, but we’ll re-evaluate if necessary. Thanks for watching!

    Gee,
    Old side opening Surge,, spent many a day milking in one of those back in the late 60s, early 70s. One was a double 2, the other was an inline 7. I must say, vacuum pump needs to be outside!!!

    • @vnthomas16
      @vnthomas16  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ve milked in a double-2 before, I really liked it. No need to put the vacuum pump outside. It’s an ancient piston pump, so it’s not too loud, and it doesn’t exhaust oil. That said, I have a bigger DeLaval 76 vane-type vacuum pump. It’s definitely got to go outside since it’s an oil-blowin’ screamer! Thanks for watching!

  • @scottsnodgrass4361
    @scottsnodgrass4361 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Very cool but I would absolutely move that vacuum pump. It’s so loud an I think your good cows would enjoy their milking a whole lot more if it weren’t so loud.

    • @vnthomas16
      @vnthomas16  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good advice! The vacuum pump always seemed louder in videos than in real life, but yeah, it was moved out of the parlor some time ago. Not only did the cows enjoy the quieter milking, so did the milker! Haha! Thanks for watching!

    Wow I respect your patience, but would have much quicker with a spryer.... but great job.....
    Probably you have already done it, but some concrete sealers would help big time to keep it all clean....

    • @vnthomas16
      @vnthomas16  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello! Good morning! If the stalls were outside, I would have considered spraying. I really just don’t like spraying inside. Sure, brushing was slower, but prep time was minimal. It’s a trade off I guess. I got the mils I wanted, so I guess I did ok. Yes, the concrete is sealed. We seal all our concrete, interior and exterior, no matter it’s use. Thanks for watching!

      We salvaged ours. They were originally in the barn across the road. We paid $150 per stall about 10 years ago. Probably another $500 per stall in new bushings, hardware, steel, paint, etc. Might check out the Facebook group “used milking equipment”… I’ve seen them come up on there before.

    How many pounds of milk per cow per day?

    • @vnthomas16

      It varies since we leave the calf on the cow, but I’d say on average we’re keeping 20-25# per cow per day for ourselves. Thanks for watching!

    Nice wheel, but I've seen better ones. Also, I use an Android app for that that works ok. I find it hard to believe that they aren't made any more, but perhaps they aren't. For visuals, they seem to be hard to beat for your 1 to 300 cow dairy herd.

      Hi there! What wheel do you prefer? I have people asking about mine all the time, but since mine in particular is not made anymore, I’d love to have an alternative to steer them to… I would think that apps and computer programs have largely replaced wheels and such, but I love that at a glance, I can get all the info I need. When I paint tubes I put nitrile gloves on and use a car wash mitt dipped in paint and wrapped around the tube. Super fast. This may come in handy in ten years when you need to paint more tubes 😂
