    The funny thing about Stanley Turrentine is that he's got his own unmistakenly distinguishable sound, as young as I was in the 1970s I could hear that it was him playing and knew that it was him. What a great soulful saxophonist he was!!! Thanks.

    I grew up on Stanley and the thing my dad taught me about him was that he was organic soul. It was pure and part of his being and it always came out in his playing. He was the prototype for the sound concept of CTI records.

    Stan the Man Turrentine...in my opinion the best tenor player around. All you haters don't get
    excited... that's my opinion, live with it!! RIP Stanley.

      These levels of musicianship do not allow for concepts like "better" or "worse" any more. Is Stanley Turrentine better than Michael Brecker? Is Brecker better than Coltrane? Is Coltrane better than Wayne Shorter, Shorter better than Bob Berg, Berg better than Dexter Gordon? I simply cannot tell. I do think that at a certain level categories like these do not make sense any more.

      None of us were alive at the time but when Charlie Parker played Koko he changed the way 'all' horns were played.

    This is the sh*t! God that unmistakable tone and those super tasty lines...the one and only. We used to play "Sugar" in a band I was in. I haven't heard any Stanley in so many years. What a gem. Forget all the double-timer technicians out there. This is how a tenor is supposed to sound.

    It's quite frustrating that there seems to be so few videos of Stanley. I have no idea why this is, but I look frequently, and rarely find any. He was out playing all the time, I wonder why so few recorded him....

    • @jimneely861
      @jimneely861 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's beyond me... in my opinion Stanley was the best. His phrasing was brilliant and uniquely his, a mix of blues and bop. I have about 10 of his cds and a couple vinyls. RIP Stanley.

    • @StevenCharlesJazz
      @StevenCharlesJazz 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kazire4591 Huh??? So you actually believe there's not many videos of him because he's "not as creative as many others"? That's quite a stretch. I see tons of videos of players who can't hold a candle to him, I doubt you can draw any conclusions as to someone's level of creativity by their numbers of TH-cam videos, that's a new one on me. And he was an influence on many players, including myself, and even Michael Brecker named him as one of his, so he must have had something unique going for him. And in this age of tons of players, who one can't tell from the other, just having a sound & style is a great accomplishment in itself. How many cats can you recognize just by a hearing a few notes?
