This is pretty cool, right? I can remember so clearly Edward coming over that night and wanting to be part of the music I was working on. I know this is crazy but I believe he was into the moment as much as I was (if that's even possible). He was simply so happy. I can remember him playing those beautiful chords and the little melody in the right hand. Then several months later when I listened to the 5150 album and heard a song called "Love Walks In," I was struck dumb. I thought, "Oh, man, this is the song Edward played that night when he came over!" It was an extraordinary feeling and much like the way I felt when he would come over and play me tracks of the as-yet unreleased albums. Really overjoyed you're all digging this. I think it's a real part of the Van Halen legacy and I'm honored to share it with all of you.
You were great for him Steve. What you did was gave him a CONTEXT in which he could show his ideas to you while he was involved in the process of creating them & this clearly had a positive effect on those very projects he was working on (Paul)
Incredible. What we are witnessing on this tape was Edward evolving and trying out ideas for a great piece of music. He had all the parts in his head here already. He had the chord sequence and structure, and he was getting the other musician to play this sequence so he could play on his guitar over the top of it what would become Sammy Hagar’s Vocal melody. And in 1985 this was before Sammy had even any idea of the vocals or lyrics. Ed could hear all the different parts together in his head and would show Steve and this other person how he wanted to develop it. With the synth bass register too…I personally think Love Walks In was an even better keyboard piece than anything on the 1984 album…And. Ed was clearly writing vocal melodies on his guitar knowing in advance that Sammy could achieve the top range….Another interesting thing about how this particular track evolved between 1985 and Feb 1986 when it was being cut in 5150 was that on the lull bits where it reaches ‘and then you sense a change’ words Edward realised that it couldn’t be played to a click track because just before that lull there was a slight retarding of the tempo which wouldn’t work and would sound too robotic if you recorded to a click track. So Ed played the keyboard live with ALEX doing the tempo by EAR and FEEL without a click track in his headphones to get the feel of that lull just right. Thanks for this footage. Fascinating historical time snap of Edward’s creative processes. (Paul)

Oh. My. Gosh. Love Walks In. I saw them on this tour at Alpine Valley in East Troy, WI in May of 1986. Thanks Steve!

Do you have any unheard audio of Sammy talking about being in Van Halen?😂
TOO BAD DAVE QUIT THE BAND IN 85, I WOULD OF LOVED TO HEAR WHAT DLR WOULD HAVE DONE WITH THESE SONGS.
