I heard this as a child at church by an older woman. I taught it to my daughter years later. My daughter was 8 years old when she learned this poem for school. She recited it for a few years at different churches. This is a great poem I’ll never forget ❤️

So glad I found this! What a beautiful description of Creation...I first heard it in grade school and always remembered the first few lines and the author's name. Thank God for this poem to help others visualize Gods desire for a family to share His creation and love with!! 💞

I did the same but in the 6th grade. My grandfather was an attorney in Miami, OK and represented a Baptist church gratis for 30 years and they gave him a framed print of this poem for his office. Truly one of the finest poems of the 20th century.

I have loved the "Fred Waring and the Pennsylvanians" version for 65 years.... but to hear James Weldon Johnson read his own work is a special completion! Thank you very much!

My junior high school teacher played this for us 55 years ago. I never forgot it. It's fantastic!

Fantastic poem. It's a psalm, really. It's one you want to read aloud--and loud!-- yourself. It is interesting to hear how the poet himself read it. I have to admit liking it better delivered in a more folksy style, like a soulful preacher. It is fun listening to other youtube videos of people reciting it. Thank you, James, for creating this poem for the world.

Thank you so much for this video. There are a lot of interpretations of this poem, but there's nothing like hearing it from the great poet himself!

This was the first poem I memorized at 10 years old. I am reciting it tonight for a Toastmasters Project (Interpretive Reading Project 2 - Poetry). Thanks for posting this. I never heard James Weldon Johnson read it. Cool!

I recited this poem in high school in the '80s. Thank you so much for sharing. I didn't know he was African American and never heard him recite it until now. God Bless you!
