Idk I don’t follow you on any other social media because I don’t really use them so I’m probably just dumb. These guides are good year round and for years to come. I've been watching them that are 3 and 4 years old because I want to try watercolors. I want a good travel brush, like if I could only have one, maybe a round 6? Is that a good size? I picked up some Prang to start with.
I did pick up at Costco for about $16 in November a Watercolor art set. It has 10 Tubes of colors, 1 Tube of white Gouache, 12 watercolor pencils, 2 drawing pencils and a sharpener, 3 wimpy looking brushes, an instruction book and 10 sheets of paper. No real pigment info or brand names on the colors though. Oh it has a little 6 spots pallete too.

@@recoveringsoul755 I usually use a size 6 or 8 for watercolour because its really versatile for large areas and details but it's down to personal preference I guess. The brushes I use are Royal and Langnickel (I'm from the UK, I don't know if they have them elsewhere) but they're really inexpensive and work well for me
I really love using white gouache as well it's so helpful for watercolour!! And having no pigment info is fine until you want to go further with art, like if you wanted to display it or sell it, then you might want to look into a brand with light fast information to make sure your paintings last :)

I just picked up an 8 color set of Prang because of this channel. Just intrigued by watercolors and not sure if I will be any good at it. Now I'm wondering if I might be color blind to some extent. I was watching some videos of artists using markers, and the Vivid Green marker looked like brown or tan to me, and the Burnt Sienna marker looked like a Dark Olive Green. Oh dear.
I wouldn't go so far as to die for a set of paints thoush, not this $6 one that I got. My life is worth more than that

Also don't forget there's usually a 60% off coupon during the holidays at Michael's. (Keep in mind I'm speaking as someone from America idk how/what coupons apply to other countries) I just bought a 24-color set of Koi watercolors that would've been $40 total and I got them for $16 after using that coupon. Its definitely worth getting the Michael's app because they have a default coupon almost everyday you can get 40% off an item. And if you join the Michael's rewards (its free) you pretty much get like 2 bucks off your purchase. Combining that rewards discount and a coupon has saved me so many times from having to dish out a shiz load of a money when buying my art friends gifts.
Here's a list of cheap Michael's products/tips that helped me when I was a beginner I wasted my money sometimes so you don't have to lol:
-Artist Loft Alchohol markers they aren't the best but they get the job done and in my personal experience there is little to no streaking
-Artist Loft sketchbooks are great. The biggest size one was $5. Great for graphite sketching and anatomy practice. I paired them up with crayola supertip markers when I was a beginner and there's no bleeding. Keep in mind these do NOT hold watercolor well.
-Crayola supertips they come cheap asf 50 markers for $7 this was super useful when I wanted a less heavy medium and there's great color variation. Cheaper supplies tend to be less concentrated or "juicy" helping you build hand coordination before moving on to harder mediums
-XL Sketchbooks I gt mixed media with 50 pages GREAT FOR WATERCOLOR These usually are like $12 but with the 40% off coupon from Michael's you get it for 6-7 bucks depending on taxes.
-For the love of god DO NOT BUY CHALK PAN WATERCOLORS. Michael's typically sells artist loft chalk pan watercolors DO NOT USE THESE. These do not emulate professional grade watercolors in the slightest they dry all dusty on your paper and make it crusty
    .._________..
Anyway those are some tips I've learned over the years! Happy holidays and remember you get expensive supplies on a budget just pay attention to discounts as much as you can 🎄💗

    • @soniccookie655
      @soniccookie655 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

1, the Artist Loft markers are okay but there are actually way better options these days. Go for Ohuhu instead. Cheapest alcohol marker out there right now but pretty good. Only available online sadly.
2, I should try those whenever I get to a Michael's next. Right now my Walmart has some 12x8 sketchbooks for only about $2 and they're amazing for the price (I just use them for random sketching and sometimes markers, they hold up well to about two layers of marker but none after that. But for sketching they're good if you want something a little nicer than a notebook and don't want to waste a good sketchbook on graphite and pens. they're ok for colored pencil)
3, supertips are amazing I love them.
I agree about the watercolors, in my opinion Crayola is the best cheap watercolors out there right now (although for some reason it's really fun to use dollar store watercolors in my sketchbook).
Good tips, just wanted to add a little of my own experience.

@@soniccookie655 oh yeah feel free to add input these are my experiences and they definitely will not match up with other experiences. Everyone adding their two cents can definitely help someone else who wants to gauge what materials are best for them 👌
Supertips saved my life as someone who wanted to improve technical skills before attempting more expensive supplies
Also I have Windsor and Newton as well as Koi watercolors that are pretty damn expensive and I STILL use crayola they are *that* good

The prismacolor premiers are wax based, where as the polychromos are oil based. Now, for me the prismacolors break so bad and so often no matter how much I babied them, that it is worth paying more for the polychromos that pretty much never break, and are super pigmented.

@@viiviolet I have ended up with many that were basically unusable because as soon as you tried to use it, it would break. As soon as you sharpened it and touched the paper with it, it would break again. Not the tips either, but the entire core. I have tried all types of sharpeners, and sharpening methods, they are stored in a padded case and still they break so often. It is more like the cores are broken up in the case already. I love how they feel when they work, I guess I just keep getting the bad ones in the bunch. I have heard of others with similar complaints though. However, I got polychromos recently and I tried them out pressing harder than I ever would need to, and they just did not break. To me that made them well worth the extra money. I wish prismacolors weren't such a pain for me because they are nice when they aren't breaking.

You probably got a different formula. I think they're softer so that you can blend them easily. But I personally never had any of my prismacolors break on me unless I add too much pressure... However, it's probably because I'm very light handed but all in all, it just really depends on your personal liking and the formula you're more comfortable with

Another thing to give artists is gift cards! Cannot go wrong with that either so that way if they do already have some favorites, they'll be able to use it towards those items. Also getting stuff like masking tape, a hair dryer, a dish to wash their brushes in, a paint palette they can put their paints into for color mixing or making their own custom palette, even palette knives, X-acto knife, a safety ruler (helps prevent a LOT of cutting accidents), is other things that artists may need.
Few different places you can look for gift cards/certificates:
    -Walmart
    -Hobby Lobby
    -Michaels
    -Local art shops
-Jerry's Artarama (their canvases are more expensive there so not the best place to get them)

For those who don’t follow me on twitter, I just want to give a quick update:
Posting has been sporadic these last few months because both my 2 year old son, who we all lovingly call Da Babes, and myself have had some serious medical issues.
Da Babes has Goldenhaar Syndrome, which is why he has his little special ear. Goldenhaar can sometimes result in low lung function which, in itself, is hard to deal with. Babes also has severe asthma and has been hospitalized multiple times since he was about 20 months. Not only that, but I’ve dealt with some pretty scary medical issues of my own that will persist into the new year.
All I ask for is a little patience with my upload schedule (95% of you have already shown your support and have been so incredibly patient and understanding) because we are going through a hard time right now with lots of ups and downs.
I’m posting this here to make sure I’m reaching the majority of my audience, which is here on TH-cam. I’m also posting this to clear up any talk that I’m just “lazy” and that I “don’t care about my audience”. These notions are absurd and completely untrue. All I want to do is make my videos and art and have a happy, healthy life with my happy, healthy son and husband. This is not the reality right now.
Every day is a concern and Babes needs a lot of extra attention right now, which means he’s attending daycare less in order to stay home/go to doctors appointments/receive treatment. This means I have significantly less time to work, even with an iPad or phone with me on the go.
I’m hoping that with the new year comes health for my son and myself, and I can’t wait to engage more with you all.
To those of you who have been understanding and supportive, thank you. From the bottom of my heart, you have made this difficult time so much easier for us. I feel safe when I know that I’m not alone and you all have gone above and beyond to remind me of that.
    Much love,
    Emily Artful
Just in case someone didn’t see it. I hope you and Da Babes get better, Emily. Love you lots! -Nae

The strathmore watercolor journal is also nice and holds up very well to a lot of water but I don't think it's cotton. It ranges around 12-30 dollars I think, depending on size.

My love for art now has made me even teach my boyfriend a little about art as he is naturally quite good at sketching compared to most when he never draws. Today he bought a moleskine sketchbook which is awesome. I'm still not as good at art as I'd like to be but it feels good to not be the type of person to shred everything I draw now and have a consistent sketchbook. Even when I mess up a piece I now leave it instead of tearing it out. So hoping to invest in a lot of nice materials soon to continue this hobby I was once terrible at and am now okay at

I absolutely adore my Canson XL Mix Media. I sketch, draw, use markers (water based), use acrylics, and watercolor. It doesn't hold water very well, but I can layer cheap water-based markers in it, and layer acrylic up a ton. They are not technically double sided (both sides have different tooth feel), but it's not too big of a difference. For some things I prefer the "back" side anyway.

Some other affordable products that are good quality! : (most of these are on blick's though Jerry's Artarama also has very good deals too)
Royal Langnickel Zen brushes, range from ~$2-4 on Blick's, they work great with watercolors, gouache an acrylics as far as I've seen
Blick Alcohol Markers, can be purchased individually and a set of 12 is going for $15.75 on their website rn and individual markers are about $2 each. I've never used them personally but I've had a friend who made amazing art with them and the reviews for it are quite good as well
Reeve's Gouache, a pack of 24 is only ~$13 on sale atm on Blick's
Faber Castell 9000 pencils,, good god they're such amazing pencils for graphite work and have a wide range; about ~$1.40 for individual pencils, online
This isn't an art supply per se or that good of a gifting idea,, but if you want a porcelain surface to mix watercolors/gouache on I would just buy a ceramic plate or bowl from walmart lol, it works very well imo. There will be an issue of not having separate wells but paying big bucks for a specialize porcelain palette that usually has 6-7 wells at most is a bit eh.
Also if you have one near you, Daiso has super cheap and super cute crafting supplies which would make nice gifts if your artist friend (or you) is into that!

For an inexpensive, but archival, watercolor paint at student grade Van Gogh watercolor sets are an absolutely amazing value. You can get adorable pocket boxes for about $20 US and they are slightly better quality than even Winsor and Newton Cotman paints. The paintings will hold up under light. They rewet like a dream and use real pigments. The only drawback is they lift a little easier if you work in layers than professional quality paints. A teenager or adult starting out in this medium would be ecstatic to receive these. They're easily available in art supply stores, both online and in physical stores.

About Master’s Touch from someone who works at hobby lobby: it’s great 👍 Master’s Touch is Hobby Lobby’s “generic” store brand, which is why it’s only at Hobby Lobby but I personally love the Masters touch brand and their watercolor and oil paints are just as good as the acrylic. They also make really great canvases, and sketchbooks, and gift sets too. Also, you can watch the website for the sales cause the entire brand goes 50% off like every other week or so (at the time this video came out), and if it’s not on sale when you go in, there is a coupon on the website/app for 40% off of one item. Just load it up on your phone and they can scan it at the register.
I wanna say that although I do work at Hobby Lobby, they just pay me to run a cash register, not review their products. I’m just someone who works a part time job and I appreciate when I can get good products at low cost and I wanna help other people in similar situations get the best deals. Thank you for taking the time to read this far. 😊

Heya, just another tip for less expensive supplies, check out good dollar stores too. I live in Canada and a big one here is dollarama and they have stuff going up to about $4. Some of their paint brushes are REALLY good for the price, I have a bunch of the golden taklon ones and some white as well that work very well for acrylics AND some are not bad for watercolor either!! I don't buy the super cheap ones, they're not very good but the ones that are about $3-$4 for a set of 3 or 5 are pretty nice. They also have cheap canvases and canvas boards which are pretty rough but sand them down a bit and a couple of coats of gesso and they are good for practice. Lastly I have found wood panels as well!! The ones here are smaller... 5x7 and maybe 8x10 but for only $2-$3 each they are great too!!! Hope this helps others out there whether for gifts or for your own uses!!! I find it works great and i can use the money saved from there to spend a bit more on my other supplies such as paints and pencils!!

I’m not a professional artist or anything but I use derwent watercolour pencils. You can use them as normal colouring pencils or use a watercolour brush once you drawn with then and they practically turn into watercolours. I have a pack of 28 colours and you can get them from hobby craft. They are probably in the more pricey section but not luxury.

I went to Berlin 1-2 months ago, and I was allowed to pick any art supplies I want for christmas (of course not too many)
I picked a cheaper set of watercolor, even though I could have picked some expensive artist quality ones, but I know that I should not start with the artist quality ones. I already know that I'm into aquarell and that I like to work with that medium, but I never owned aquarell in a set like that, so I leaned towards the cheaper ones, to test that out. When I get better I can buy the better ones with my own money
But I wouldn't tell you that if there wasn't a plot. One of my best friends, Liz, is very very new to art. She barely touched the surface and she never made a "real finished piece". She doesn't even own a sketchbook (thats why I'll gift her one as a christmas present)
About a week ago she told me that she is going to get a watercolor set for christmas. An expensive one. Very expensive. Artist quality. She never ever used that medium before and she doesn't even know if she likes using it at all.
Of course I'm happy for her, but uhm yeah.. I don't think that that is an appropiate christmas present. It would be so much better if she just got a cheaper one, student quality for example, and for the money her parents didn't spend on an expensive set she could buy lots of different cool art supplies in an local art store
(I own a lot of "cheap" stuff my mom bought there, and I LOVE it)

If you have a little more money, I'd recommend folk art by plaid for acrylic craft paints, at the very least get black and white from folk art! they're a little easier to work with than apple barrel imo and the lighter colors don't require as many coats

I use the canson XL mixed media sketchbook, and I can put on watercolor without buckling, inks, and acrylic paint perfectly. I have some problems with normal pencils and colored pencils because they rub off to the other side.

Thanks for the tips. I hope you and yours are well and I’m praying that Da Babes has a complete break from his asthma for the rest of the Christmas season. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

I started painting with those. My third painting was surprisingly good.
