  • Can you propagate Croton in water? Watch this video to learn how to grow Croton from leaf in water - believe me, it's really easy to propagate Croton plant from leaves and you can do it with the help of only water. However, once you see the roots on leaves, it would be a good idea to transplant them into soil.
    Please let me know if you have any questions and I would be glad to assist you. Thank you very much for watching and have a great day:-)

      Hi, I have a croton plant, actually 8 years old, grown from a single leaf, it has its weaker times, leaves fall off, but soon I get new growth and what usually helps me, I remove leaves which are faded or look sick, mainly those lower ones, by now my plant looks like a small tree because it makes new leaves on upper parts. You can even cut a branch and it will start growing new from that point. I water it only with spray bottle in summer, maybe every other day, it stays on the window without much moving air but with sun in the morning till noon, and if I get worried about it, I simply air the soil with a thin scewer very carefully, add a few spoons of fresh soil on top and hide a tiny piece of plant food stick close to the roots. In few days you hopefully will see changes to better. I also spray or gently shower the leaves. They show be dust free. Cinnamon on top soil can help protect your plant from all kinds of sickness. Happy gardening.

      Croton leaves don’t have the capacity to produce a bud from a leaf. There is even a name for this phenomenon: a rooted cutting that never produces a plant is called a blind cutting.
      A single leaf will develop a surprisingly robust root system. But to produce a new stem and, eventually, a complete plant, it would need an axillary bud. It is only from this bud that the plant can regenerate.
      Pretty roots but no plant will ever grow from it.

    Unless you include the stem i.e the top part of the plant in this video, these leaves will not grow into a plant. They may survive for years as a leaf which may appeal to some. However, please do not chop your plant up hoping to get more plants from the leaves alone. You need the stem!

    • @Mystikphobe
      @Mystikphobe 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Yup! The node on the stem is precisely whats needed to produce a plant though. you can have the stem and accidentally not include the node in your cutting and therefor wont have another plant produced. im sure you know this i just wanted to add some detail for those who do not know

      @suburbanearth9076 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@tyblips this reference video would not help you with your monstera adansonii. Different types of plants altogether. If it DID grow roots, then you had a cutting that would’ve developed into a plant. You usually cannot get roots without a node from monstera varieties. If you still have the cutting, put in only a small amount of water to prevent rot on the stem, only submerge the node area. You can use super thrive to help with shock and root growth. You can also place cuttings in with other rooted cuttings because the hormones that promote root growth will be at great levels. Monstera can take a very, very long time before there is substantial root growth. As long as your cutting doesn’t show signs of rot, or leaf death, the cutting should still be completely viable and on the process of sending out hormones for root growth.

    So now I have to whip somewhere a couple of leaves ;)))
    One more think - croton as Euphorbiaceae should give white toxic juice when you are removing the leaves from the stem and I can't see it, why ? I also know that parts of such plants should be first immediately put into light warm water ( ~36*C =~human body ) to let the juice to go out. Otherwise it becomes hard and blocks taking water, blocking whole possibility to live.
    Thank you for your work and congratulate to your 'green hands' :), as we are saying here, in Poland :).

      @Isha Kapoor - Beauty Consultant, Sorry for taking time to reply, Broadband not working because of lockdown. Anyway, Thank you SO SO much for your feedback, appreciate it. But, plz try with stem cutting and that way you would get the result much faster. You can use just plain water and keep the stems in water. Changing water once a week would be more than enough. Good luck :-)

    I started a leaf cutting in the late summer- it developed many roots. I planted it in a good, quick-draining potting mix. The leaf stayed healthy for 6 or 8 months, then, in the spring, the leaf gradually deteriorated and died, without any evidence of shoot development.

    • @montanateri6889

      Croton leaves don’t have the capacity to produce a bud from a leaf. There is even a name for this phenomenon: a rooted cutting that never produces a plant is called a blind cutting.
      A single leaf will develop a surprisingly robust root system. But to produce a new stem and, eventually, a complete plant, it would need an axillary bud. It is only from this bud that the plant can regenerate.
      Pretty roots but no plant will ever grow from it.

Some people say it's better to change the water, some say it's better to just leave it and just top off the water when too much evaporated. What's your opinion on that? Or is it different from plant to plant? It might also make for an interesting experiment video. Keep up the great work!
