Having been the recipient a contentious down-field free kick as the buzzer sounded on Saturday night, the Carlton recruit made himself an instant hero with a remarkable goal after the siren to secure a stunning four-point victory over Fremantle.
Pressed deep against the boundary fence, Newnes' 45m set shot drew back to perfection, sparking wild scenes of celebration as the Blues plucked victory from the jaws of defeat to win 5.10 (40) to 5.6 (36).

An exciting game and a thrilling highlights reel, but did we really need 5 replays of Kade Simpson getting the ball to the face? Personally, I got the idea after the 1st replay, and TH-cam does have a rewind function.

Crab Dan Thank you for your suggestion. It would have been a great suggestion if I was a) impatient, and b) able to see into the future. I’m neither, and neither can I see the point of seeing the same thing 6 times in a highlight reel. It looks like poor editing, while the rest of the video was really good.
MrNScatt if your so annoyed about it don’t watch the highlights then. And if you do, there is an unlikely chance the AFL channel will see your comment.

As a Fremantle supporter, yes we were robbed, but I don’t care. Carlton deserved the win, honestly, Newnes did to us what Robbie Gray did to them. You can’t win them all, although after the sirens are the worst games to lose.

Shattered. Absolutely devastated. Carlton played a 3 quarter peformance whereas we played a 1-2 quarter game at best. Our defense was strong but you could see it coming. Free kick probably wasnt Newnes' ball but bloody good kick. Deja vu from round 15 last year against the blues, except worse.

Carlton need more depth, composure and disposal efficiency. Watch any carlton game in 2011 and see how slick Carlton were and then watch this game and you will see how bad the skills are. In 2011 Carlton players could hit a needle with their kicking. Today they will be lucky to hit any part of the boundary fence.

Yeah, Carlton fan as well. Bloody amazing kick, but a shame it came from 2 pretty bad decisions from the umps. I think the umps were pretty inconsistent both ways today, and also Carlton didn’t have much of a forward half this game. I’ll take the win, but we have a lot of room for improvement based off of today’s game.

Then every game players will be giving away free kicks to bring the ball back and drain the seconds.
So I guess it was the right call to have it down field, but Gibbons should have had the free.
It doesn’t matter now, that’s football - some are good calls and some are bad.
The free was given to Newnes cos he was the closest player to Docherty at the time of the offence

If you watch the kick again, the free kick was paid to where the ball went out of bounds and gibbons was the closest -
That’s why the Fremantle couch said Carlton pulled one over the umpires.

@@SirSSau yes me too, but the kick was paid there because the free is usually paid where the ball lands. As it went out of play it was paid where it went out but the person closest to Docherty takes the kick not the person close to where it lands. That is why the umpires told Newnes to take it

Great kick to win it but it was about the 4th goal in the highlights that Carlton shouldn't have got. Freo were ripped hard by the umps in this one. Never should have been paid deliberate out of bounds, or down the ground. As usual the umpires fcked over the purple army.
