I haven't been here in over 25 years, so I do not remember the observatory or "Sunbeam" which may not have been open at the time, but I do have a photo of me in the dining room (allowed at that time). There was a cute story about the finial on the flagpole outside the house: they didn't have one so they took the old hollow float device from one of the unused bathroom toilets, painted it gold, and stuck it on the top of the pole (it may have been replaced since). The back garden is spectacular in the spring and summer. This house comes a a surprise to many because they think "Abraham Lincoln = log cabin" without realizing that his son Robert was a very rich lawyer who became the president and then chairman of the Pullman Palace Car Company. Excellent video.

Thank you so much Louis! You are DEFINITELY due for another visit! In March they’ll be opening an exhibit dedicated to Peggy, and they are constantly refreshing and renovating different parts of this old gem ❤️ It makes for a unique experience each time. If you have that photo handy and don’t mind sharing I’d love to see it! It’s very cool to see the progression of this historic site. The Friends of Hildene have done a remarkable job ❤️

@@travelpixiestyle I really have no idea how to get an old photo (1980's) on-line. Also, I'm not on any other sites. Now that the only Baccarat outlet in America has moved from Manchester to Florida (last I saw), I don't tend to venture up to VT.

Happy to see Robert and his family had some peace and happiness after surviving so much tragedy early. Thank you for sharing this with us.

Same - they for sure had plenty of heartbreaking tragedies. Standing on those grounds is SO peaceful - It makes my heart so happy they got to enjoy the beauty of this place after such rough beginnings!

Wow, wow, wow! I am completely flabbergasted and astounded! I never heard of this beautiful place before. That house is in the most charming, serene setting where peacefulness and natural beauty abounds. It's interior is stunning, tastefully decorated and reflects a level of graciousness and contentment that is heartfelt. Yet, the house, while quite large, is not overwhelming. The exterior views of the mountains and acreage landscapes are enchanting, extremely calming and very humbling. A wonderful place to pursue personal reflections. This place is definitely on my bucket list.
What an awesome video tour of this fabulous place. Thank you so much for allowing me to come along! May GOD continue to guide, protect and bless you always!

Kenneth I am so glad to be able to introduce you to such a wonderful place - it’s one of my absolute favorite new places in the world, hands down. There’s so much charm and natural beauty and you can get such a sense of the adoration this family had for this unique property walking through it. It is one of a kind. ❤️ You absolutely have to share when you get there yourself some day!

We visited with Hildene with our children who are now in their forties. Saw that top hat when it was not glass enclosed and there were also original hand-written notes by A. Lincoln that one could still actually touch; saw the reproduced original wallpaper in the entrance and stairway (there are 4 differently carved rails there); saw the stained marble sink where Peggy had recently used to develop her photography; that screen with photos was used in the White House by Mary to allow her children to select bedtime stories; the child's rocker was also from the White House nursery. Our young family did craft shows in the back meadow and my sons swam in those creeks---thanks for lovely memories for this early patron, now in her mid-seventies! The Equinox Hotel in Manchester Center is where the Lincolns spent summers to avoid diseases then common in DC. [As aside, Mother Myricks, in town, has some of the best eatable goodies and treats in all of New England.]

Amanda thank you SO much for sharing! That is amazing ❤️ I love hearing everyone’s visiting experiences and the progression of the house restoration! There’s original wallpaper in Peggy’s room (formerly Mary Harlan’s) and the screen in there was reproduction made - it’s very neat to see the original and recreated side by side! The top hat really is something special.
