    Best episode to date! I had the pleasure of attending a lecture by the lead boatwright on the restoration of the USS Constellation. He described going out into the coastal forests of South Carolina looking for "knees" of live oak that were used in the restoration of that majestic tall ship. Now I understand what he was talking about. Thank you Lou---your knowledge and the application of that knowledge is truly inspiring.

    You'll have to check the usable angle, but those are some nice looking crotches. Thanks fellow viewer for having our craftsman out to look for what he needed. It may have taken years to find this requirement at a lumber yard. most crotches at yards near me have the smaller leg/branch cut off already.

    The way you're sharpening that saw is the way I've been doing it for 70 years. My preffered brand of chain saw was a Pioneer.

    Who would have thought that this video series would become my "Go To" watch of this, Mid Year 2018...? Not me. Thats for sure. But here I am. On lunch break. Watching a Master at work. Glorious. Great clean entertainment. Such a wealth of information to take in, all in the space of time it takes to squaff down a Steak Pie and a Cola. Perfection in my book. Thank you kind Sir.

    Lou, looking at the two of you sawing great slabs from the trees it got me to thinking: what the hell did they do back in the day when there were no power tools. I guess everything was pit sawn by hand. You'd want to be pretty certain of the integrity of the fork before attempting all that work!

      @cholulahotsauce6166 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ross Munro water powered sawmills, but for a crotch like that I bet you're right, it would likely need to be handsawn.

I have been following your series, told a friend about it because he built a dory, thought he would be interested in your skiff. Curious, how is your last name properly pronounced. I have looked at it and tried to work it out, but I'm sure I got it wrong. Thanks for a great series. Keep up the great work.

    Ring porous woods, like oak and ash, grow with two kinds of wood each season. Spring or early wood has tube structures for carrying water and nutrients. Summer or late wood is solid, and forms the darker rings seen in cross section. When there is narrow late wood rings between porous early wood rings, the lumber is brash, and weaker than when there is wider late wood growth rings.

    Question. The trees cut in this episode. Even though you did not use them, is that unused material still going to be cut up into marketable wood? It looks to me like there is a lot of usable base stock for other projects there. I would hate to see whole trees tossed away after taking just a small piece out of it.

    • @davidj.7779
      @davidj.7779 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If you look again at this episode, when they are making the initial cuts with the band mill, Lou specifically mentions that the cuts are 2" thick so usable material will result, though not suitable for the boat project.
