- Brewing with a Pressure Rated plastic FV has become more and more popular in recent times due to the low oxygen brewing benefits as well as being able to ferment under pressure. A recent addition to range has been the Kegland FermZilla Gen 3.2! In this video Stiffo and Rob get hands on and ferment a beer using this Fv as well as set up and track fermentation using the RAPT Pill Digital Hydrometer!

Love your beer dance in the beginning.
I love the Kegland products, they just work. And they're affordable which is always a bonus! I brew on a Brewzilla 35L 3.1.1, ferment in a Kegland all rounder and use the RAPT Pill. None of it has ever let me down.
Good video guys, only one thing to add, it’s advisable to smear a little keg lube around the o rings on the Pill as it can be extremely difficult to screw the two halves together.
I use food grade silicone lubricant but same thing.
Top work Rob! You guys are making some fantastic content! Good idea using the box to keep the FermZilla dark!
Version 4 already in the works;)
I do the closed loop transfer to get the beer into the keg if you have the FV higher than the keg. beer to beer line, gas to gas line pull the prv on the keg to start the siphon, saves on co2.
I also purge the keg with fermentation co2
Top job chaps. Love the expensive jacket to keep the wort in the dark!
Works a treat!
Enjoyed the video very much - good job! The thermal jacket for the Fermzilla does a great job of keeping out any light and holds in the heat.
Just started my first fement yesterday with that heat belt connected to a rapt controller and can already see from the portal graphs that the control is way tighter than my old setup of tube heaters in the fermenting fridge. Very promising.
Added bonus, the box with insulate the the fermenter, bonus points for those who toss over an old blanket/sleeping bag.
Great video, I finally upgraded to using both these products just a few months ago. Im still getting used to the triconical after using a bucket for many years. But so far its turned out a couple of lovely beers. The pill is amazing, i wouldnt be without it now, especially since i realised recently that I can have it feed the data straight in to my grainfather app!
We hadn't seen that they are now in the GF software! Great news!
@@themaltmiller8438I've tried to send the link to the instructions I followed, but I don't think youtube likes external links. I found some instructions on a Spanish site, from memory it involved a creating a custom integration in GF and a webhook in the RAPT portal. Very easy to do and works a charm.
Santa has got me the Fermzilla gen 3.2 so I'm looking forward to giving it a go myself. Cheers to the whole team there at MM
Thanks Sarah! I know you'll have fun with that!! Hope you're well?
@@themaltmiller8438 All good here thanks. Looking forward to some time off over the holidays and chance to get a brew on. Hope everyone there is good.
Used to use a Grainfather conical fermenter, but became tired of the small volume and having krausen spewing out of the top. So changed to a 55l Fermzilla. Very happy with the results..my beers have improved since being able to pressure ferment. Typical Kelgland genuis, great producs at low prices.
Awesome second instalment with the kegland range and how easy it is to use 👍 I just wish that when the collection jar isn’t on you could invert the stand so the vessel sits lower then you can get it into most diy under counter fridges for temp control. I had to go for the all rounder which has less features but still a good FV looking forward to see what other items you stock in the future. I see with your brew days you use the grainfather might be worth adding a brewzilla option 👍
Was thinking similar thoughts, I may have to Billy Butcher the top of my old fermentation fridge with an extension somehow 🤔
You could sit it in a bucket, cut it down to a height that suits.
Great info! Thanks for sharing. The Fermzilla Gen 3.2 is looking like a solid next step up from my current Catalyst Fermenter.
Cut the dip tube line to length. Don’t close the valve and leave trub/yeast in the collection vessel they explode. Believe me.
curious about how well the pill works under pressure (heard pressure alters gravity readings) & (more for my situation) how it would work in a detached garage - a bit far from the wifi, with the fermenter in a stainless steel fridge...
The dry hops and use of the bottom to dump the trub - along with the pressure issues, that would have been helpful to see...
Now I'm off to look for videos on that process. Want to see that thing taken off while there's still beer in the thing.
Also, your set-up on moving beer would have been nice - all the things you mention at 20 minutes. I get the time is an issue, but maybe make those videos and have a link?
Here you go! - th-cam.com/video/Ehe1zjT3gS8/w-d-xo.html
We've used the Pill under pressure, worked well. As with all digital hydrometers, you can't entirely replace manual readings with them at the start and end of fermentation. They are a great tool for monitoring start and end of fermentation and triggering key points in your fermentation such as temperature ramps or cold crashing
Excellent video gents, I'm currently using an allrounder and it is much better than the glass carboys. I do have kind of a sidebar question though, more of an opinion, I set my spunding valve at about 5-7psi after 4-5 days of fermentation and let it finish out fermentation while naturally carbonating. The questions is, which do you prefer, natural carb or carbing from a "commercial" source? I have found that natural carbing seems to end up with a bit of a smoother beer, not so much co2 burn if you will.
It really depends on the beer style we are brewing. If it has lots of hops added at any stage such as an IPA or NEIPA then we force carb after fermentation so as to not put too much pressure on the beer and risk muting the hop aroma. Most other styles then we will try to naturally carb as you suggest
Dry hopping with the yeast harves chmaber is not recommended , since the hop oil will embraced by the yeast cell. The best way to do it is to use kegland hop bun.
Yes, the Hop Bongs are great and a preferred method but we wanted to show what can be done with it out of the box. As long as you have dumped yeast first then this is a viable way to dry hop
I have bought one from TMM but haven't used it yet. You will need to be able to cool the fermenter somehow (larder fridge or std size fridge as was suggested by sam) especially during the summer month. I only have an under the counter fridge and I am intending to go for the Brewolution's Ferminator Connect, which is basically designed for the Fermzilla, lots of other uses too! Unfortunately it isn't cheap, about £390, but it heats/cools and fully protects from light. My current set up is Brewtools/GF Conical Fermenter (without cooling) and corny kegs for dispensing.
The only issues with the Ferminator connect is that it uses Peltier Cooling which is costly and somewhat inefficient.
Great video have you covered the procedure for bottling from a Fermzilla
Not yet! But I have added it to the list!
Yeah I'd like to see something about that too
Be a hell of a job cleaning that in my sink LOL .But one heck of a bit of kit .
I wish I saw this video last week, I was trying to register the pill using an iPad and an iPhone, it got increasingly confusing. All set up now but what a great explanation on how to set the pill up. Note, did you check the temperature for accuracy?
Only against the external thermometer on FV's we have used it with and it's pretty accurate. As with the gravity readings though, we do suggest that it's a guide rather than precision
If you want to make the UV risk inconsequential, why not just use a LED or sodium vapor lamp? That would allow you to see things whenever you want (a benefit that all home brewers love) as opposed to hiding things in a box or whatever. I got an awesome motion-detection dual 4' LED lamp (looks just like flourescent) for about $20 (may well be $30 by now).
Or pop it into a fridge where you can also control the temperature
That’s what I do:-)
With the repeated concern expressed about the beer being light-struck, I'm a little surprised you didn't use Kegland's insulation jacket--not only does it keep light out, it also provides some measure of thermal insulation. Of course, a cardboard box costs a lot less...
🤣 Yes it is! Plus we don't have the jackets yet!
How did you dump the trub? Looks like you fermented without the bottom container on?
we added the collection vessel during fermentation 👍🏻
Brilliant. 🍺
Enjoyed the video.
Could you provide a link to the Kegland Heat Wrap? Couldn't find it on your site.
Also I was hoping you'd pass judgement on the accuracy of the Rapt Pill by doing a comparison between the gravity at start and end given by the Pill versus a hydrometer.
here you go! www.themaltmiller.co.uk/product/fermentation-heating-wrap-belt-with-velcro-strap-30watts/?v=79cba1185463
We've not done a side by side of the two yet, however using the RAPT Pill, we've found it to be very reliable
Hi, thanks for video.
Can i ask you, do you open your yeast collector from the start, when you fill it with wort or wait for the end of primal fermentation and drop it to collector?
Yes, open it from the start. Then close it when you need to remove the yeast or dump hops etc... Always dump the pressure from the tank before removing the collection vessel though.... could get rather messy
Thank you, bro! And one more question. Can't find any detailed information. You got blowtie2. It' s aimed for pressure 1 bar.
All calculators count pressure minimum 1,5 bar for ales for temperature about 20 degrees.
So, 1 bar is enough to get good co2 in beer and when do I need to start using blowtie?
The only issue I have is when you remove the collection vessel about 100 mls (nearly half a cup) spills out all over the bottom of my fermentation fridge. I've put a plastic tray under it but it's still a messy process.
Agreed, we've tried loads of different ways to stop the splash when yo take off the collection vessel but it always ends up with yeasty hands (and floor)
Hi, I believe Santa has a 27l version set aside for me as I've been really good (he shops @ MM👍) Am I right in thinking a thermowell is or will be available so my temp control can get an accurate reading? Thanks for the bids, keep em coming.
We're currently looking at the other items customers want for their keg and products so we can build our next order. We can look to add this to the list
Great job guys! One question: what is the pressure rating for the Rapt Pill ??
Great question, up to 5bar, about 70PSI, which is was higher than the FV
How was the temperature inside the fermenter communicated to the heater wrap?
The heat wrap is connected to a controller, could be an inkbird ITC 308 or the RAPT temperature controller from Kegland. The controller has a probe that can be taped to the side of the fermenter with a little bubble wrap over to insulate. The controller will turn the heat wrap on and off when required.
Is there a really basic guide to brewing under pressure with a 3.2?
I'm really struggling. I've read through the PDF, but it almost mentions it as an "aside".
I've watched the @Kegland video, but it's all theoretical and more like sales patter.
In one of your latest videos, you've said "We covered this", but you haven't.
Literally, a step-by-step guide or instructions would be really helpful. I keep reading things like "Pressurise to 10psi", but I need to dry hop and it says for pressure ferm, you need to keep the butterfly open and the container connected, so how am I supposed to do this?
Hey! It might be worth checking out our pressure fermentation play list, across all these you should get everything you need. Any remaining questions, drop us an email at hello@themaltmiller.co.uk. The basics we alway recommend are that you should try to define the difference in your fermentation, if you're using lots of hops (West Coast or NEIPA) then very low pressure, no more than a couple of PSI as higher will inhibit the flavour and aroma from the hops. Lagers can be fermented much higher with no temperature control, using appropriate yeast styles such as 34/70 or WHC Einstein. These can be fermented at around 20psi at ambient temps and the pressure will suppress off flavours and aromas from the yeast. With lagers as well you can use the pressure to naturally carbonate your beer.

What is the work principle of the pill to measure SG?
They float in the wort and as the resolved sugars are used by the yeast the angle that the hydrometer sits in the wort will change and this is what's used to derive the gravity change/reading
Moving to Thailand and decided to leave my kegasaurus in Canada as the shipping volume is too large for the cost. Thinking of buy 2 new ones in Thailand. Do you think we could (After cold crashing and carbonating) bottle directly from the fermenters? Would you over carbonate if you were bottling? I will be putting the fermenters in a commercial pop/beer cooler to ferment (Thailand is too hot). this will also allow me to cold crash the wort by simply turning the temperature down on the cooler. What you think would this work?
Yes you can fill directly to bottles from the fermzilla, although you may experience lots of fobbing so cold beer and cold bottles would be a must or use a counter pressure filler to keep the foaming in check.
I live in Thailand and brew as you suggested, it’s the only way to cool the beer down here after cooling as much as you can. Pop into the chiller and wait for the temperature to reach pitching temp, can take a few hours as the tap water temperature here doesn’t go much below 30deg C
@@icemanknobby I have a chiller, which i plan to put in a tub with ice to get my wort chilled to pitching temp.
I've had an all-rounder for quite a while (don't have the height in my fridge for a conical) and always struggle to get the lid off once it's been under pressure for a while. Most annoying when a beer needs dry hopping. I've never seen an official suggestion posted - I've tried a little food-grade silicone lube around the seal recently but it was still difficult. The only reliable way I've found to get the lid off is to slighly unscrew the lid ring and pop it off with a little pressure, but this always feels pretty risky.
Any suggestions - looks like that lid has a different (red?) seal to my 2020 all-rounder?
We have found this a few times too but a little wiggling seems to help, will keep our ear to the ground for any suggestions. As you said, the pressure method is a little risky...
Leave a tad of pressure in the lid, slide a blunt knife carefully between the lid and the vessel and prise off slowly with your hand on the top at the same time. When I say leave some pressure in there, I do mean virtually nothing:-)
Thanks for the interesting video. Can the Kegland Fermentation Heater Wrap reach optimum temperatures for Kveik yeast, say 30-40 °C (86-104 °F)? I’m using a Fermenter King Junior.
Yes, absolutely. It will be effected by ambient temperature though so you may need to add insulation for this.
Hi, just quick question - how did you link the Rapt Pill temperature data to your Inkbird heat control?
You can't directly link an Inkbird to the RAPT Pill, Kegland do however sell a RAPT temperature controller which works in the same way an an Inkbird but does allow connectivity and control + fermentation profiles etc... We will be bringing this in to our range in the next few months
The temp controller is the business and running preset fermentation profiles is a dream when linked to the rapt pill.. it makes it so easy. Get on it!
Do you have a link for the heat wrap? Cant find it on your website. Thanks.
Hey buddy! Here you go www.themaltmiller.co.uk/product/fermentation-heating-wrap-belt-with-velcro-strap-30watts/
In a very cold garage in uk in winter, will the heat wrap belt be sufficient to hold fermentation temp without the insulation jacket? thanks
It will do a good job, yes. For more accurate control add an InkBird temperature controller as it will toggle the heat mat on and off to maintain the temperature www.themaltmiller.co.uk/product/inkbird-temperature-controller/
@themaltmiller8438 thanks, I have the rapt temp controller but was just concerned as I dont have the insulation jacket and cold weather is forecast. 👍
I have a tilt does pressure fermentation mess with the readings?
Not in our experience however it's best to think of the digital, internal hydrometers as a guide anyway. They clearly show you when fermentation has started and stopped plus temp etc... however they can be interfered with by yeast activity, krausen etc... which can mean that the true reading may alter slightly.
Was wondering if you would do a package with the brewzilla and fermzilla nad the kegging as well from the kegland so it is a all in one with the accessories as well
Good idea! We can certainly look at something like this
Ah no way, they’re sold out. Any more due soon?
They had sold out of the rapt pill last week too. It was such a good price, everywhere else selling it at silly prices.
We will be getting some more in the coming months, the price for the Black Friday deals was a for a promotional period though.
what pressure did you set on the spundy
On this ferment we held it very low, only a couple of PSI as we wanted to drive fruity esters from the yeast
Rob . You just look my Grandson jigging about when he`s desperate for a piss. I suggest you go for one before you do a vid in a cold room.. Only joshing.
Good info by the way, Am temped to sack my stainless ferm now.
