  • If God alone is responsible for the salvation of the elect, does that mean He creates unbelief in those He didn’t elect? Examining this question in this message entitled “Did God Create Unbelief?” Dr. Sproul clearly establishes that God is not the author of sin and does not create unbelief.
    This is the 5th in a series of messages by Dr. Sproul on God's salvation. See other videos in the series: • Chosen By God - R.C. S...

    I agree with RC. The point he didn't make that nails it without any ambiguity is the the word forknowledge is NOT the word FORSIGHT. The word foreknowledge is the word PRO GNOSKO...Gnosko (To know Intimately) as in adam knew eve and she bore a son. Also as in "depart from me, I never knew (gnosko) you". So gnosko is a deep intimate love and knowledge of someone. It is not merely forsight (seeing what would happen & choosing that) that theory makes me chuckle, and makes God a very puny God indeed.

    Calvinists want to say that God foreordains whatsoever comes to pass, but in the very next breath, they want to say, “Ah yes, but he did not foreordain that Mr Smith would commit a particular sin at 5:30pm on 3 November 2023.”
    Well, they can’t have it both ways. If Mr Smith is just left to do his own thing, how can it be said that God predetermines that thing?

    The good news is that God DOES NOT predestine anyone to hell. OR "pass over" those who He could have saved but chose not to (for whatever reason)
    How can you be so sure Emile ? Are you God !? . . .
    No, but the classical interpretation of Romans 9, Romans 8, Ephesians 1 etc . . . mixed with the classical general Jewish view of foreknowledge, predestination, election (corporate and individual) and the journey toward glorification . . . mixed with even the most basic use of God given human reason and sence of fairness, love and justice . . . mixed with the rejection of the view that a few guys who lived after 3 quarters of Christian history so far had already elapsed suddenly saw what none of the great leaders, theologians, teachers and wonderworkers of the Church never did . . .
    . . . gives me a very good, solid and overwhelmingly favourable reason to accept the classical, historic and Orthodox (non Augustinian) view, and uterly reject what is, as Calvin himself said, "the terrible doctrine" - the doctrine that Augustine basically invented ! - Double predestination with the addition of meticulous determinism.
    Calvinism is proof of just how important it is for us to feel "safe" within the consensus of an interpretive tradition... part of something bigger than ourselves.
    Any of us can come under dodgy teaching, and John Calvin's novel system (because he was at such a pivotal and influential moment in history) unfortunately received cult like reverence among certain reformers and has thus influenced many many thousands afterwards.
    The real consensus of the mind of the Church on the matters of foreknowledge, predestination and the place of grace and free will in the entirety of salvation was clearly reached and taught amongst the post apostolic / Ante - Nicene Father's. The whole of the ancient church in both the east and the west, and also the majority of Protestants today, utterly reject Augustine's novel view of predestination in the early 5th century, and the "determinism" of Calvin in the 16th.
    Arguing with a fan of reformed / deformed theology is like arguing with a non Christian cultist (though obvs "Calvinists" are deeply consevative and Christian) ... You can't reason with someone who's brainwashed. They "swallow" the hard pill of "the terrible doctrine" out of reverance for God. They have also received a very warped and lopsided view of Christian history which "seems" to uphold Augustine and Calvin as the heroes and bastions of "true orthodoxy"... (oh the irony) ... a history lesson which is bias and has no actual basis in reality. (the JW's / Arians would have more of a case from history, and their doctrines (though wrong) make far more Scriptural, philisophical and logical sense than those of some of the reformers)
    Divine determinism - to the point that Calvin took it - is unscriptural, irrational and horrific.
    In love !
    Peace to all in Christ X

    It's hard to elaborate what's wrong with irressitable grace and predestination unto salvation without using this basic argument.
    Because Jesus died for all men's sins, all men do have equal grace in that fashion. If within the divine porrogative, one person is blessed to recieve something that another is not, it is not an injustice. At that point, it's not a matter of a biased God, it's a matter of what person shall do His will. Because of the cross, He proves it is within His nature to say "I want all men to come to me, but I know not everybody will come". Because of a passage like
    "Who shall go to be a lying spirit in the mouth of Ahaz' prophets."
    And a lying spirit even answering, it's not a matter of bias or injustice. It's a matter of facilitation. And in the righteiusness of God, God gave Ahaz a chance once again with a lone prophet who spoke truth.
    Ah, if I ever felt like I am walking a doctrinal tight rope, it sure is now.

    The idea that God selected people outside of Christ before they are regenerated is not back up by scripture! How do you make the claim that some receive mercy and some don't? How do you equate mercy to justice? What he is doing is really a false dichotomy of the word. That some how mercy has to be unbound in order to be mercy? He needs to read the passages regarding the interaction with Moses and the burning bush! Yes God has sworn by his right hand, and because he could swear by no higher! These concepts of mercy and justice have been unseated from their context and used to fit the heresy of Calvinism!

    Fact: Only God is perfect.
    Fact: God is Just, so He must punish sin. To be love what is good means to hate that which corrupts what is good.
    Fact: God cannot create something that is equal to Him, therefore, all created beings are imperfect and have a "sinful nature".
    Fact: A lifetime of sinning and a rejection of Jesus Christ deserves the punishment of eternal Hell, because God's Hatred for sin is everlasting. However, the harshness of this punishment depends on the sinner. Satan will suffer unimaginably because He has been sinning since the beginning, whereas someone like the Rich Man still had his mental faculties and could even communicate with Abraham despite suffering.
    Fact: Those in Hell continue to sin and have no opportunity for forgiveness because they rejected the love of God.
    However, the interesting part starts here...
    Fact: Since all have sinned, God has the right to choose who He wishes to save. He does not have to show mercy, and He will not for some to display His Holiness.
    Fact: Anyone who asks God for mercy will receive it. God is faithful to His promises and cannot lie.
    Fact: But only those who have been born again by the Spirit of God will ever choose to ask for mercy. Those who don't have the Spirit cannot love God because they love their sin. They hate God because of their pride.
    Fact: Though we have been born again, that does not mean we are completely set free from the lusts of the flesh. God will sanctify us slowly, just as He explained to the Israelites that they had to multiply their numbers in the wilderness before they were ready to enter the promised land. In our flesh God is teaching us as His Father to know right from wrong, to learn to hate sin and put to death our sinful flesh in the same way that Jesus was refined and perfected through His suffering.
    Fact: If we don't have assurance of these things then Satan will eat us alive and we will fail to let the Spirit work in our lives. Satan wants us to doubt God and give up on Him, but we must never lose heart. God's love is unconditional.

    Rest upon a human choice…You mean a human choice like Adam and Eve made? It does rest upon a human choice to whether to believe or not. What could be clearer in Scripture?! But that God does the believing for me is not belief. But that God does the loving for me is not love. But that God does the choosing for me is not choice. And that is what this comes to. Calvinism is determinism. It changes God, it changes man, and it changes the Gospel.
    In this specific passage, the central mistake I believe Sproul ( and I grew up listening to Sproul and reading his books - fantastic teacher) makes in in conflating the election of Israel with the election of believers.

    How would you feel if an earthly father showed favor to one son and not the other and just gave the explanation that it's his perogative to do as he wishes. We'd think that was unloving, unkind, and unfair. And the repercussion of God's choice of showing mercy to one and justice to another is dire - it's an eternity in hell. I cannot see how this action demonstrates any love on the part of God. The people commenting here can praise God for His actions because you're one of the elect - or so you think you are - how can you be sure? And what about your loved ones who aren't believers and have no hope of becoming believers unless God draws them? What is the point of sharing the gospel? Why is RC Sproul even giving this class? I'd imagine everyone in attendance is already one of the elect. You may praise God for His mercy toward you, but do you also praise Him for showing His power and wrath toward those He chose not to save?

    • @daisy35310
      @daisy35310 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @KTTGHMTJWYCBLAC RC Sproul was a Calvinist - they believe that no one can come to the Father unless the Father draws him. Only those God has chosen to regenerate and give faith, will be saved. According to Sproul, MacArthur, and Piper - man cannot even desire to know God and thereby seek Him out or hear the Gospel and repent and be saved. God in eternity past decided who will be saved and who will be damned. Man has absolutely nothing to do with it. I have been listening to sermons from all three men and find it all very upsetting. I understand what you're saying and I agree with you - but that is an Armenian doctrine which these men reject. According to them, man has no hope of being saved unless God made the choice to save them before they were born. My point in my example of the 2 sons is that this is not something a loving father would do - to show favoritism. And the consequences of God's favoritism is extremely dire - hell for those He chooses not to save. How can it be loving for God to decide who wil be saved and who will not? How is it even just? True, we all deserve death because we are all sinners. God doesn't have to save anyone. But to have 2 equally guilty people stand before you and let one live and the other go to eternal damnation is not just and not loving. I believe God reveals Himself to everyone. It is clear just from observing nature that He exists. I do not take away from God any of His power or glory in providing a way of salvation to man by believing man has a choice. Calvinists believe that man having a choice to follow Jesus - a choice they make - somehow takes away from God's glory in salvation because they feel this somehow gives man some credit in his salvation. When I heard the Gospel over 30 years ago and realized who I was before God given my sin, I was humbled and repentant and gave God praise for revealing the truth to me. I in no way gave myself any credit for salvation. I believe salvation is a gift - a gift is given and can be recieved or not - it's up to the person it's being given to to make that decision. A gift is not forced on anyone, nor is the value of the gift or the love behind it lessened because the person it's being given to decides not to take it. Calvinists believe God basically forces salvation on a person - they have no choice to reject Him because He gives them the ability to see, believe, repent, etc. It's all His doing and He made that decision from the foundation of the earth. They can't say no because His will is always accomplished and He willed them to be saved. This is the Calvinist interpretation of the doctrine of predestination and election. I have been agonizing over this doctrine for weeks because I want to know the truth about Who God is and understand what He does. I've tried to look at their interpretation of Scripture and wrap my head around it and I just can't see how they can believe this let alone preach it. Where is the hope of the Gospel? Why preach at all? If God already has chosen His elect, why bother? I read comments under their videos by people saying how happy they are that God chose them. How does it feel to know that God may not have chosen your husband, child, parent, or friend? If this doctrine is true, how can I continue loving a Being that would do this to people? My heart is breaking and my faith is crushed.

      God fitted vessels of wrath for destruction. It might not feel good to you but it's what The Bible says.
      In English there is only one word for love. So when you read The Bible in English you only get one. But The Bible wasn't written in English. There's 2 words in The Bible for love. The main one is agape. That word is defined in 2nd John 1:6. The other word is phileo. That's the word for affection. You are confusing the affection type love with the the commandment type love
      This is a common mistake when people go by the English reading of The Bible.

    Excellent teaching, which has helped my understanding of differing views to come into more lucid focus. What Dr. Sproul speaks of as positive/negative of God's action (or inaction for negative), in the hardening of Pharaoh's heart, I think can also be applied to 2 Thess. 2:11. "And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie..." Perhaps God will simply remove His restraint of evil (after all this is an eschatological verse), allowing reprobate minds to be further blinded by the enemy, rather than directly by God. And yet all He allows is by Him for He is sovereign. I am uncertain as to whether or not I expressed my thought well enough here, but there it is. Blessings.

Without choice, we are just robots, and there is no glory for God in that. I can even build a robot. These predestined people within the Bible are made and used to teach a lesson. That does not mean that everyone lives a predestined life. Jobs family was predestined to die. Other families were not.

    For salvation, we just need to follow the way they did it in Acts? They were baptized in water for the removal of sins and filled with the Holy Ghost. Acts 2:38!
    Here's why! The gospel is the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 15:1-4. If we are to follow him, we must do the same thing. Death= repentance, Burial = baptism, and resurrection = being filled and rising again from the dead and walking in the newness of life. That's what Acts 2:38 is.
    We must obey the gospel, 2 Thessalonians 1:8-9, in flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that OBEY NOT THE GOSPEL of our Lord Jesus Christ...
    Matthew 7:21-23, Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that DOETH THE WILL OF MY FATHER which is in Heaven. St John 3:3-5, EXCEPT a man, be born of WATER AND OF THE SPIRIT, he cannot enter into the kingdom of GOD.
    We can't come up with our own gospel. Galatians 1:8-9, But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. Don't be cursed.
    One way for all people. Jews, Gentiles, and Samaritans. Our salvation has to match up with the scriptures and no scriptures on the subject can be taken away.
    Eternity is TOOO long to be WRONG! st, John 5:39, Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.
    The gospels show what Christ has done on the cross for us. The book of Acts shows us the beginning of Christ's Church and how to enter the Church, obeying Acts 2:38. The letters were written to the Church to show us how to behave now that we are born again into the Church.
    It's better to walk alone than to walk with a crowd going in the wrong direction.
    Are we supposed to follow the teachings of the apostles? Acts 2:42, And they continued steadfastly in the apostle's doctrines. Ephesians 2:20, We are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief cornerstone.
    Don't get Titus 3:5 mixed up with James 2:14-26, about WORKS. One is a WORK of your OWN RIGHTEOUSNESS OR GOOD DEEDS and the other is a WORK OF FAITH. Titus 1:16, They profess that they know God; but in WORKS they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate. God bless you!

    Justice is meted out to everyone. For those outside of Christ it is received directly, for those in Christ it is vicariously done to Christ on our behalf. The just dying for the unjust, our sins imputed to Christ and God's wrath being poured out onto Christ in our stead and Christ's Righteousness being imputed to us for whom Christ died. In every case, God's justice is satisfied. Propitiation is about the satisfaction of God's wrath against us. Christ is the Propitiation for our sins. "God made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, so that we might become the Righteousness of God in Him" (II Corinthians 5:21).

    Just as Sproul looks at Romans 9 it’s very important to also look at Romans 10. What was God’s plan regarding Jacob and Esau? To restore Israel and to offer salvation or Gentiles - first to the Jew and then to the Gentile.
    These are well meaning preachers but this theology is false. How does faith come? By hearing the word of God Romans 10:14-15. God could supernaturally give faith without the need for another person sharing the word but He has chosen to do so this way.
    God is sovereign we agree but also created man in His image with a will. From Genesis 1, God grants Adams authority in the earth. That’s why we pray “your will be done on earth as it is in heaven”. God allows us to partners with Him (or not)
    Romans 10:21. Why would God hold His hand out to a disobedient Israel all day long. Why bother as in Calvinism’s view He already knew they wouldn’t! Why did He send so many prophets to restore Israel time and time again?
    God desires ALL to be saved and come to repentance and will save those who believe, Jesus paid the atonement price for ALL men and will save those who believe, the Holy Spirit is calling ALL men and will regenerate those who believe.

    Sproul is a Western reformed theologian!
    Consider the following from the Christian EAST!
    The MISSING DOCTRINE in the Protestant predestination debate is Eastern Biblical GRACE which is "God working in us" to enable ALL people to be free to receive or reject God's love!
    Philippians 2:12-13;
    Titus 2:11;
    1 Timothy 2:3-6
    The order is,
    Grace > Repentance/Faith > Life in Christ (regeneration)
    Jesus is truly God and truly man! The Bible is about the love of Jesus Christ for all!
    John 1:1, 14; 3:16; 1 John 4:8
    It is by freely believing IN CHRIST by GRACE that we are chosen and elect IN Christ who is God's beloved Son and the only One chosen!
    Luke 9:35;
    Ephesians 4, 13;
    Romans 8:29
    These riches in Christ are a result of our freely repenting and being faithful to Christ, which we can only do by the GRACE of God which is "God working in us!"
    1 Corinthians 15:10
    Apart from Jesus we can do nothing! John 15:5
    But God loves His creation and all people and wants all to be saved!
    1 Timothy 2:3-6
    In love Jesus willingly died for all in order to raise from the dead to conquer death, sin, and the devil for all!
    This is Christus Victor!
    Hebrews 2:9, 2:14-15;
    1 Corinthians 15:22;
    Colossians 1:20
    God's loving Grace, which works in all who are dead in sin, enables ALL people to freely choose to love God and be saved!
    John 6:65; 12:32-33;
    Titus 2:11
    But the choice to love God remains in all people!
    John 7:17; 11:35
    The divine order is:
    1) Enabling Grace for all!
    John 6:65; 12:32-33; Titus 2:11
    2) Our freedom to repent and be faithful to Christ! Acts 17:30-31
    3) Being united and made alive with Christ (regeneration)!
    John 20:31
    What the Calvinist system does not have is God's Grace "working in us to enable us," to be free to choose to be in Christ!
    Philippians 2:12-13;
    John 6:65, 12:33-33;
    Titus 2:11
    The Calvinist system cannot answer why Adam was created very good and created in God's image and likeness with a "mysterious free will" and Adam lived in a perfect environment and had the Spirit of God and yet Adam disobeyed God and fell from grace!
    Therefore, Christians can also fall from grace! Galatians 5:4
    The Calvinist belief that God predestined most to go to hell, and that they are given no grace to freely believe is not the God of the Bible Who is Love!
    1 John 4:8
    God foreknew all those who would believe in His Son by God's Grace!
    God predestined them to be like Christ!
    Romans 8:28-30;
    Ephesians 1:4-5
    God did not determine who would believe in Him and who would not! God’s foreknowledge does not cause man’s choices!
    To choose Christ and receive Christ's love for us will be Heaven.
    To reject Christ and Christ's love for us will be the experience of Hell!
    The predestined reprobates in the Calvinist system never have a chance to experience the love of God! This is injustice!
    John 3:16
    Calvinists believe that in the atonement God the Father poured out wrath and damned and cut off God His Son on the cross! (See Sproul, McArthur, White, etc. sermons) This is a heresy condemned in the Ecumenical Councils because it splits the Eternal Holy Trinity!
    Christ died in order to raise from the dead and destroy death, sin, and the devil on behalf of us all!
    And now God commands everyone everywhere by the grace of God to repent!
    Acts 17:30-31;
    Romans 1:20

    If people would just understand that according to the truth of God’s word.
    Col.1: 15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist.
    In other words its all about God and His pupose.
    Rom.9 For who has resisted His will?” 20 But indeed, O man, who are you to reply against God? Will the thing formed say to him who formed it, “Why have you made me like this?” 21 DOES NOT THE POTTER HAVE POWER OVER THE SAME LUMP TO MAKR ONE VESSEL OF HONOR ANITHER FOR DISHONER?
    22 What if God, wanting to show His wrath and to MAKES HIS POWER KNOWN, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath prepared for destruction, 23 and that He might make known the riches of His glory on the vessels of mercy, which He had prepared beforehand for glory

    “God activity is inactive on the reprobate.” Immediate after reading the verse “I WILL HARDEN WHOM I WILL HARDEN.” Sounds like Yahweh hardens when you just read it at face value. I’m tired of theologians trying to give a 30 minute explanation to what is clear and evident. Also, is not “removing the hands” or “letting go of something” an action!? Come on. If he held pharaoh up by grace he had to make an ACTIVE DECISION to let him go his own way, that requires ACTION on gods part. Yes, Yahweh is author of all.

    I really respect this man. But starting at :27 minutes he was more philosophical than Biblical.
    I wish he had brought SCRIPTURE for that last opinion.
    I would have to be inclined to disagree with him.

    I've spoken to many Armenians, and I ask them all the same thing: "Did God put his Holy Spirit in you to influence your decision to come to Him?" and they ALL say a resounding "yes".
    This answer is the heart of the doctrine of election. God gives us the Holy Spirit which allows us to be tenderhearted towards Him in order to choose him. Without the influence of the Holy Spirit, we can't make the decision to follow Christ. This is why we pray for the Holy Spirits influence on non-believers.

    Salvation is NOT the topic of the election between Esau and Jacob in Paul's Romans 9 epistle? It is found in v4 - He wanted Jacob's lineage to have "the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the law, and the service [of God], and the promises;" through which Christ would come. It wasn't about being elected to salvation. How could one go to their death without the promise of full assurance of salvation, if God hasn't told you who you are on the Calvinist plan? That alone, shows its a wrong Gospel.
    Believe and live - Believe not and die. Simple.
    (John 6:29) Jesus answered and said unto them, *_This is the work of God, that ye believe_* on him whom he hath sent.
    (Jas 1:18) *_Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth,_* …
    (1Pet 1:23) *_Being born again,_* ... *_by the word of God,_* ...
    (1John 5:1) *_Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God,_* ...
    (John 3:36) *_He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life;_* but the wrath of God abideth on him.

    While I have long loved RC and his teaching, it nonetheless irks me that he so loathes Arminianism as if they are the opposing basketball team. Growing up Arminian without having even heard that term until my late teens, I then explored Calvinism as the opposing team and like RC, I could shred their doctrine in defense of my own. Eventually I learned that if I were to be pigeonholed you would have to call me a Calminian. I don’t buy the doctrines of men but simply follow the intent of Scripture. Both “religions” get off course by making their view a religion. From my view BOTH doctrines are right depending on if you are looking at from God’s perspective or Man’s perspective, and both are wrong when you confuse perspectives. If you walk in sin you are not saved. If you are saved you do not walk in sin. (I John 1:6&7). It’s really not that hard to figure out if you just stop focusing on these “religions” and just read your Bible.

    Yes Gods purpose. Let us make man in our likeness and image. This before he even made man. So which one would fulfill that purpose Jacob or Esa. Well only God would know so therefore its not about doings but about who is this purpose. And that is the end of it. Don’t make anything more out of it or else you will reason wrongly

    No RC, God did not create unbelief. Man chooses to believe or not believe in our Lord Jesus Christ. Are predestination and election biblical? Absolutely! But in accordance with "whosoever will." Who are the elect? Whosoever will!

    I agree almost with everything what R.C. teaches. There is one thought though in my mind: I was nat given a chance at my birth to choose between evil and good. I was born with the stigma of sin and death only because some thousands years ago Adam did sin. So, granted, I deserve justice because of my fallen nature. The problem is - I was never asked if I embrace the fallen nature. So it means I take the fall for someone else's sin unless God offers me a hand.

      Just as we all sinned being IN ADAM, we are justified being IN CHRIST in his death and resurrection.

      @yousuf nairang it is not enough to say “I don’t agree with him” to meaningfully rebuke someone.
      His argument is based on the teachings of the Scripture. If you want to rebuke him, you have to prove at least that his argument is faulty…

      You say "it means I take the fall for someone else's sin" as if to say you've never committed sin before.
      If you've sinned at all, you deserve eternal damnation in hell, apart from the redeeming grace of Christ.
      And all people are born sinning.

      @@justinmadison513 I think that's what the poster was saying here...'why should Adam's sin be imputed upon him to begin with'...as he the poster, thinks it's unfair he had no say-so in the matter. Anyway, I think that's what he's trying to say.

    Roman's chapter 9 is not something that is taught on much. I've heard this was directed twordes God's choice of races, gentiles over Isreal for example. But this study seemed to me to be taught truthfully. Why does it not get taught this way?

    I am brought to remember the crucifixion of Christ. It was custom for the governor to let the people choose one person to be freed from execution. There was no question in principle that the others were not treated unjustly because the one was treated with mercy.
    And how unrighteous is man's mercy, where the innocent is shown none and the guilty is set free

    The example of Jacob and Esau is of two nations. God later Changes Jacobs name to Israel. Then Esau repersents Edom. "Esau is Edom" 2 nations Israel was elected and predestined to be the chosen race. Then Paul cleares up that all who call on the name of the lord are decendents of israel children of faith. The way predestination is described is meant not individually but as a nation. Whoever confesses with there mouth jesus is lord and belives in there heart God raised him from the dead will be saved. They are part of the children of israel by faith. RC did not explain that here. never the less RC is a great teacher I am thankfull for his ministry

    Yes, God is the ultimate cause of unbelief because He foreordained the fall of Adam.
    Election and reprobation are flip sides of God's one eternal decree. Both are equally ultimate because God ordained it all.
