I am very much enjoying this series of lectures. A rock hound and collector, I live on Cape Cod on top of a pile of glacial till from 20 to15 thousand years ago topped with a thin layer of soil much younger than that. Wandering the beach I find rocks and minerals from all over northern New England and even southern Canada. We harvest garden vegetables by adding salt hay and seaweed to the sandy soil.
It’s fun stuff to learn about for sure. I cover soils further in my Environmental Science course (lectures 9 and 10) if you have even more interest in learning about soils.
@@EarthandSpaceSciencesX You guys have done a great job organizing this video series. I’m from Oregon. My background is in emergency planning and disaster preparedness. I specifically started off watching your lectures to learn more about Geology. Nor do I have a science background. Regardless, I applaud you for making all your video lectures engaging and informative. I no doubt will be following your video series and repeatedly watch to affirm my understanding of all the science topics you present. Good content stuff and excellent presentation skills!
benjamint444 planetary scientists use a different definition of soil than scientists who examine terrestrial soils. Planetary scientists will use the term “soil” for fine-grained regolith to distinguish it from rocks so organic material is not required for them. I expect the definition of “soil” to undergo some modification in the future to accommodate these two different definitions.
Different lectures tend to follow different books. The one I reference for most of my lectures is Essentials of Geology (12th Edition) by Tarbuck and Lutgens. However, this lecture is derived from many sources.

Soil. Who knew so much is going on in dirt? The longer I go on, the more I learn, the more I come to understand how little I know.

23:05 so clearing the rainforest turns out has a bad effect. lol
To say the least. lol
Thanks for make me understand.
Your video are very useful!!!😊
i never knew "supports the growth of plants" was part of the definition of regolith. we call "soil" on mars or the moon regolith, right?

@@EarthandSpaceSciencesX thanks for the reply. I'm loving this video series
The Dust Bowl is an example of poor human agricultural practices leading to the soil eroding. They learned the hard way.
Indeed, capitalism always results in suffering and death.
Really great series
Hello Sir, thank you so much for this amazing tutorial. Would you mind sharing presentation with me?
Sir you follow which book for these lectures?
Different lectures tend to follow different books. The one I reference for most of my lectures is Essentials of Geology (12th Edition) by Tarbuck and Lutgens. However, this lecture is derived from many sources.
Thanks Dr
thank you very much
Is there a good way to clear rainforest land?
No.
Leave it alone instead of exploiting and destroying it.
All I can say is 'Cool' !🤓
The idiocy of clearing rainforest for agriculture is a perfect example of how inefficient and inherently destructive capitalism is.
It's not Capitalism it is STUPID People. And you should know socialisum All ways leads to Genocide.
A dirty job but you did well!
