- Here it is!! Our absolute final version (no it's not final, V5 exists) of The Definitive Remaster of Ulterior Motives that tries to fix every complaint we've got to this point on V3 and
V3.1. We couldn't do much to reverb, we honestly don't know what causes that much of it because it was not added manually to the instruments in FL Studio, so this will have to do, please understand that... Also, listen to the tracks like "Think I'm Gonna Cry" and see how damn much reverb there is on that song. It's certainly possible and is probably the case that UM had that much reverb. You have to understand how bad the quality of the original actually is...
We've also noticed the, quote unquote, "leaked" instrumental of the official Ulterior Motives remaster, and we isolated the bass from it and tried restoring it a little. The results are fabulous in my opinion. Soooometimes it tends to get a little low quality, but that's about it, the rest is pure authentic bass straight from 1985.
Here's the whole list of fixed complaints and changes from V3.1 to V4.
COMPLAINTS:
- "Bad mixing": it appears you all mean just the reverb, lol, sometimes the bass... - TRIED TO FIX ➗
- Quiet (and a little muffled) vocals: vocals have been enhanced a bit by making it louder and a tiny bit sharper than last time - FIXED ✔
- Missing 2 claps at • [OUTDATED V4] Ulterior... after the 2 orchestra hits: up until V3.1, our remaster lacked the 2 claps after the 2 orchestra hits at the end of the solo break, thankfully it has been fixed due to someone pointing that out - FIXED ✔
- It not sounding like the 80s mixing (also sort of tied to bad mixing) - TRIED TO FIX ➗
- Too much reverb *on vocals*: some complained just about the vocals being too echoey, we honestly didn't really wanna try making it have less reverb because it always sounds too artificial, it already does a little, we don't want to make it worse now... We ourselves think it sounds just right, especially compared to other songs from the lost album, sorry if you feel otherwise - NOT FIXED ❌
SIDE FIXES THAT WEREN'T COMPLAINED ABOUT:
- Richer snare sound thanks to Macintozh's instrumental multitrack ✔
- Chorus claps are now louder ✔
- Bass now has some variants that Mac's bass did not have, that is done thanks to the official release bass, but before the official instrumental came out we were gonna manually make the variants on Mac's bass, but thank God we did not because it always kept sounding somewhat off... ✔
- Removed loud noise on electric guitar before the 2nd verse ✔
- Made the guitar a little more varianted right after the 1st chorus ends, appearing on the little break before verse 2 to make it more accurate to the actual 1985 instrumental ✔
That's all that has been changed in V4, unless I forgot something then sorry lolololol!

While this is certainly my final full cut (9/16: this aged badly), you can comment down below your fun ways of changing this remaster, or some remaining complaints that you would like fixed, and I will try to fix them and put them in this pinned comment just for you. Please do not tell me to make it have less reverb though, I've done the maximum I can on this matter.

The high frequencies in the vocals are a little bit odd, but it's one of the best I've heard, very good job man. keep it up
Lowering the highs a little and adding some more reverb I reckon could do it but best I've heard so far

the official remake just doesn't do the vocals right tbh, the singer just didn't sing it right.
Not trying to be rude but… Chris is in his 60s now and he sang the original Ulterior Motives when he was still young. Do you really think he would still have the same exact singing capabilities now like he did in the 80’s?

I just noticed that guitar is incorrect. If you will listen to the tape rip, on 0:16 it should sound roughly similar to 2:16 and on 0:19 it should go "higher".

Only complaints
One, at 0:12 I don’t think those are in the original
And two, the original uses a LinnDrum LM2, and not the one the new one uses.
Also, I feel like the orchestra hits are too lower pitched.
Also the original uses backup vocals that go “ulterior ior ior motives” and I never hear a remaster with those. Otherwise, It sounds amazing!!!

Like the synths that make the distinctive sound are too far back. 8/10 based on having only a vhs version of the original to go off on.

Am I the only thinks he's voice also sounded a bit like this in the recent remastered release? It has that little spongeboby-esque tone in his voice which I do think does for the song now that I realized it. At first, honestly I didn't liked it. Although ofc I understand not everyone is gonna sound the same after 6 decades, he's in his 60s. But now that I realized it, his voice does actually sounds decent in the final version.

Это лучший ремастер Ulterior motives, даже официальному ремастеру не хватает энергичности, здесь же всё на высшем уровне.
I've got several criticisms for this remaster.
1. Please lower the limiter / compressor on the mix. It's quite extreme.
2. Please remove the tape / cassette filter applied to the drum track. It's a little distracting and adds a bit of vibrato to it.
3. Switch the drum track to use the Linn 9000, as that's THE correct drum sound used for all percussion tracks in Ulterior Motives.
4. At 2:05, the funk guitar is slightly out of time. You should also pitch it up by a few cents to match the tuning of the original '86 version.
5. Why is the vocal take at 2:35 reused? It's not normally like this in the original mix.
6. What's with the weird AI vocals? The high frequencies sound off.
7. Maybe a little less reverb?
8. The bass track is very... bassy. It's a little excessive imo. Not as bad as the official remaster but still.
9. Replace the orchestra hit at 2:21 with the one at 0:04

I just pretty much ripped the drums from the official release and then cut the sounds out so I can manipulate them as the song goes on

Hey! Just so you know -- all the drum sounds in Ulterior Motives are from the Linn 9000 drum machine. This includes the kick, snare, claps, hihats, crash cymbal, and cabasa. They're all from the Linn 9000.
