    >a minor third is three half steps
That is only half the definition. It also needs to be three pitch-classes apart, too. F-Ab is a minor third; F-G# is not.
    F-Ab-B-D is not an Fo7, that's an inverted Bo7.

You're absolutely correct. I accept all criticism towards me when it comes to my disregard for enharmonic equivalents. I'm going to be making a "disclaimer video" shortly that mentions how viewers need to balance my approach towards music theory and this comment will probably make an apperance. Long story short, I skip over many important theoretical concepts in order to get people writing and making music as quickly as possible. I can't rationalize spending time explaining enharmonics in a video like this where I just want to demonstrate a dim7 arp built off F.

    • @AnAmericanComposer
      @AnAmericanComposer 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

Signals Music Studio As a music teacher, I can respect simplifying a complicated topic to quickly explain it to people new to the subject. I'm glad you actually know the differences and aren't just misinformed and talking about something you don't understand, something I see far too often on TH-cam. I look forward to the bonus explainer video!

Ab and G# are literally the same note. Fo7 and Bo7 are literally the same chord. You just want to criticize. Lame.

    • @AnAmericanComposer
      @AnAmericanComposer 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

@@nicolamorales7081 They are not "literally" the same note. Just because they share the same sound doesn't make them the same note. Diminished harmony is difficult to get right and it's understandable to get parts of it wrong but that doesn't mean that just because two chords sound the same that they are the same chord.

Great lesson! One of my favorite players, Jeff Loomis, uses Dim7 arpeggios a lot. My favorite example is from the solo in "The River Dragon Has Come" by Nevermore. It uses a repetitive pattern of these arpeggios alongside some chromatics in a way that works out to be really musical and a great fit for the song.

Hey, just a tip from a recent subscriber who usually gets your videos through my stream, sometimes older ones, sometimes recent ones:
Would you consider adding to your titles some sort of indicator of how advanced your individual videos are?
I really enjoy your videos and will probably end up watching most of them. I'm a teacher, so I can probably get something out of your perspectives on various levels. But an indicator as described would be welcome as a tool to choose my desired level of immersion in the moment. #millennial
I imagine such an indicator would help giving people at different levels an appropriate feeling of mastery, as well: If a beginner really jived with one of your videos, where you extruded your usual relaxation about the theory, and they felt safe in exploring, but then encountered your similar easy going attitude at levels way above their heads, that might sabotage some of that self-esteem bonus I think they really get from watching your videos.

It’s useful in death metal and other subgenres of metal that favor ugliness and evil. I’m not a music theory expert by ANY means but I’ve come up with some cool stuff using minor 2nds, minor 3rds, and tritones over the years. It helps that I play that kind of music lol. It’s also useful to note that you can use perfect 4ths and 5ths to move around without adding “color”, so it preserves the chaos you’re creating with the evil internals.

  • @brokemusician9774

Loved the video, but the explanation on music theory is confusing. *Theory rant* Because you wrote it *F Ab B D* you essentially wrote out a Bminor7b5 chord in second position or a B half diminished 7. However, being built off the root of F, the notes should be *F Ab Cb Ebb* to spell out the fully diminished 7th chord. I can understand enharmonic equivalents make them sound identical when played in that position and most people would probably feel more comfortable not saying *Cb* and *Ebb* . *Theory rant over* .
This video is spectacular considering some don't even think of diminished chords as being viable for normal use, let alone harmonization. Using all the chords in a given scale at will open up plenty of doors in music.

One thing I like to do with diminished arpeggios is go up with them on a song to build suspense and then going back into a mode or letting out a sustained root note at the end. It sounds wonderful, anyone reading this should give it a try :)

Did Ardra give you the skills to play those arpeggios?
-No, I learned how to build them with guitar theory.
Did Ardra teach you those practice shapes?
-No, I looked them up in a guitar lesson book.
Did Ardra even lift one finger to demonstrate even the most BASIC of diminished riffs?
-N-no, I took lessons once a week from a professional guitar instructor who showed me how to get started.
Well, it sounds to me like - with a lot of dedication and hard work - you managed to learn diminished arpeggios all on your own, without Ardra!

The Harmonic MAJOR and Harmonic Minor...VII, II, IV. vi chords both
      are Possible FULL diminished,
FULL DIMISNISHED are SYMMETRICAL = All b3 or WH INTERVAL
      From A Harmonic min
      G#...B....D....F.........B....D.....F....G#
      VII Loc b4, bb7
      II Loc Maj6
      IV Dor #4
      vi Lyfian #2
      C Harmonic MAJOR...= ion b6( Ab) B D F Ab
      VII Lo, bb7
      II Dor b5
      IV lyd b3
      vi Aeo b1...converted to ion #2, #4, #5
      They're not the same scale...
what it dose mean is you can play
any of these full diminished into MAJOR or Min Keys
as A MAJOR or A min...........C MAJOR or C min
      or like this...
      G7 into C MAJOR or C min
      E7 into A MAJOR or A min
The harmonic min b5 and melodic minor b5
both also have possible FULL diminished
      I, iii, v, VI chords
What you do is VAMP the Lydian b3...IV of harmonic MAJOR
Aka...Lydian DIMINISHED or inverted over the minor's TONIC
      A lydian b3......instead of F lydian b3 ( C Harmonic MAJOR)
It'll help you get used to altering that chord to a possible full diminised..
But...you were used to that play A minor pentatonic Blues variation 1
The A harmonic min b5 is the III chord of F HUNGERIAN MAJOR
      Ion...#2, #4, b7....
it's simular to Lydian b3 or Lydian #2.
You'll simply get F7 too....or it's now MAJOR or min
      Half or FULL diminished.
A The Melodic min b5...will also give you D lydian dominant b2
      Augmented chords are also SYMMETRICAL
      G#. C, E.........C...E...G#
From A harmonic minor....you could had play
      G# AUGMENTED
      or C augmented into F min/Maj7
why would it be help to alter the A min to A dim??
You could had play A dim...B dim into C Melodic min..
instead of F7...G7 into C min all de time...
Harmonic min b2 or Melodic min b2
You can modulate to G minor ...ish
The A dim will simply turn into the II chord from the Minor's tonic count
A melodic min b2 will simply turn it in Bb AUGEMTNED...as
the iii chord of G minor..ish....
You counld also play Bb Augmetned to B min /D MAJOR...
Just try it...it'll be as if you played A# augmented into B Harmonic minor.
It'll help you get used to playing the FULL diminished (WH/HW)
you can stack it...whatever...such as play DOMINANT chords every b3 intervals.
If you get lost or need help..the MESSIANI MODE will help you
get used to playing different intervals of SYMMETRICAL scales..
      such as the WHOLE TONE...
      It's continus learning process...
There's 9 -ea PARALLEL (diatonic) 7 NOTES scales...
      That's 63 MODES...not just only 7 or 21
I nevered Had guitar lessons becuase I was a problem child wanting to
      play the DEVIL's MUSIC.......BLACK in BLACk....Lmao
Angus be playing E DORIAN ish...with b5 throw in here and there
      1, b3, b5,6. or
There's many reasons I dunnn play in a church band either...
      1, b3, b5, bb7.....AKA DEvils' INTERVAL's....which is BANNED by the Church
      BACH is my Hero.lmao
Roben FORD...also has lessons how to apply is in blue ish riffs

1:38 That's supposed to be F - Ab - Cb - Ebb. I know it's easier to understand B instead of Cb and D instead of Ebb, but if you begin to explain it's a sequence on minor 3rds, than stick with it. You even label them as minor 3rds, but then write the wrong note.

Yeah, but in reality, actual Fdim7 chords don't really exist, or are very rare. The dim7 is built on the 7th degree of the minor key, and this would mean we would be in the key of Gb minor. This is more commonly known as the key of F# minor (I mean, 3 sharps in F#m vs 7 flats + 2 double flats ion Gbm), and the actual VIIdim7 chord in that key is E#dim7. (Well, technically you could use Fdim7 in the key of Gb major as a borrowed chord from the parallel minor, but the key of Gb major is pretty rare - and even in that case, it may be more common to just use enharmonic equivalents that are easier to read. Another use would be in the key of Bb as the VIIdim7/IV. So yeah, I guess it does exist, but it's very rare.)
If you use an Fdim7 chord (so that the bass note is actually an F, not an E#), for example in the key of A minor, it's actually an inversion of the G#dim7 chord, or in the key of Cm it would be an inversion of the Bdim7 chord. But Fdim7 is generally a better chord name than G#dim7/F, because both have enharmonically the same notes in them, which means that they basically convey the same message to the accompanist (playing an Fdim7 or a G#dim7/F is exactly the same thing on a piano or a guitar). But Fdim7 is a more simple chord symbol than G#dim7/F, making it a bit easier to read. And since both convey the same message, using the one that's easier to read is usually preferable. You rarely see dim7 slash chords, unless the bass note is not a chord tone (for example F#dim7/G).

    • @PCanas
      @PCanas 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I understand what you say, and like I said as well, it might be easier (it is) to read B and D instead of Cb and Ebb, but to be accurate, you (he) should use Cb and Ebb instead of the enharmonics.
For example, if I had to classifiy a chord that's written as F - Ab - B - D I would be confused at first, or classify it wrong (instead of beeing Fdim7 it could be Bdim7). If it was written as F - Ab - Cb - Ebb I would classify it as an Fdim7 very easily.

    • @MaggaraMarine
      @MaggaraMarine 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      PCanas
Yeah, especially if you are going to call the interval between all of the chord tones a minor third (instead of one and a half steps), then using proper note names would make sense. I think he could have chosen a simpler diminished chord to start with, for example he could have chosen F# or G# as the root.
But if you see Fdim7 chord symbol in an actual musical context, most of the time it's not referring to a chord that has an Ebb in it. Most of the time it's an inversion of Bdim7 or G#dim7. I really don't have a problem with calling Bdim7/F or G#dim7/F an Fdim7. In non-classical music (especially pre-20th century) context making a distinction between the different enharmonic spellings of the same diminished chord doesn't really make much sense (because the different enharmonic spellings are all about voice leading, but traditional voice leading doesn't really apply that strictly to most non-classical music). But yes, in an educational video it's always good to try to be as accurate as possible.
