A truly tragic occurrence. This famous accident resulted in large trucks being equipped with what they call 'Mansfield Bars' (named after Jayne Mansfield) on the back-end of trucks, which prevent cars from going 'under' the back, minimizing the chance of a catastrophic accident and/or decapitations.
If this Electra was really going between 60 and 80, the Mansfield bar might not have saved them, but it has, no doubt, saved many others. In some jurisdictions, tractor trailers are also required to have side barriers, but the way we configure them in this country, with the rear axles attached to the cargo boxes, makes such protection complicated. In Europe, most such vehicles consist of cab towing a flatbed (which keeps its side protection) and the container is placed on top of the flatbed.
I am always amazed at the millions of steps one must take in order to meet your demise. Just proves to me that our days are numbered. So sad. Thank you.

Very interesting. Thank you for all the work in researching and presenting this. The tragic crash also led to the development of what was referred to as the “Mansfield bar” a safety device on the rear of trailers which were intended to prevent cars from running underneath the trailer in a collision
Ironically its doubtful that the bar they have now would have changed the results, most of them will fail when hit at those kinds of speeds especially by a 66 Electra which is not a light car

I recall the news story when this happened. They claimed they ran into a dense fog patch - not a word about a fogger truck. I remember that clearly. With all those lawsuits flying around, I'm not surprised the story kept changing. The wrecked car has survived longer than Jane lived.
Thank you Scott I love your detailed accounts along with the actual locations- You bring it home for us when we can’t go👍🏼 I’m intrigued by the until………
I read up about this a few years ago, and the details are really grim. The official cause of death was a "cranial evulsion". An evulsion injury is when something literally gets torn or ripped away. So she wasn't actually decapitated. Her cranium from her eyebrows upwards was torn away from the top of her head. Interestingly, it was that accident that resulted in a certain metal bar to be fitted on the back of all trucks to prevent vehicles going underneath the rear of a truck. All trucks have them, and they're known as Mansfield Bars.
Thank you for your succinct account of the car accident which killed Jane Mansfield. Clearing up the rumour of her being beheaded in the accident is important. I wonder if the driver fell asleep at the wheel. RIP
Wow-I'm glad this cleared up the rumor of Jayne Mansfield being beheaded. The wig confuse people. I know it doesn't help Jayne at all, but I'm sure she would be grateful that someone cleared up that rumor. It was horrible!
Enjoyable video. I lived near there all during the 1960's, and regularly drove those roads. I'll respectfully add a few comments. The picture shown around 2:58 of the video is of the wrong White Kitchen. There were two White Kitchens (same owner), one on U.S. 11 (Front Street) in Slidell (the pictured one), and one on U.S. 90 at the junction with U.S. 190. I visited both often. You explored the correct site (on U.S. 90) . The one in the picture burned to the ground one weekday morning in 1962, resulting from a kitchen fire. It happened at the height of the Cuban missile crisis; volunteer firefighters were summoned by repeatedly sounding the town's air raid siren, making some wonder if WW3 was breaking out. The White Kitchen on U.S. 90 (where Jayne Mansfield may have stopped) was busy 24/7 in those days. The words "Package Liquors" were painted prominently over the main entrance. Mississippi was legally a "dry" (prohibition) state until the mid-1960's, and the White Kitchen on U.S. 90 was the nearest place on the Louisiana side of the state line to legally buy a bottle. There was also a large and busy gas station almost directly across U.S. 90 from the White Kitchen, on the west side of the U.S. 190 intersection. Those businesses disappeared about 50 years ago. Newly-built I-10, combined with legalized liquor in Mississippi, took away almost all the traffic.
Thank you for this. Another tragic fact missing was that there were empty liquor bottles in the vehicle. After getting her cash payment after this last performance, sandwiches and liquor was requested for the trip. Look closely at the crash photos you will see the liquor bottles.
@Joy Graham Travis My comment is more of a question, as I noticed the hard liquor bottles in photos as well. Do they know when and where the alcohol was purchased? And was driver's blood ever drawn for alcohol level testing? Can't imagine it not being, but ... P.S. Love your name! 😊

Just realized that was where I bought my first bottle of booze. Also at that time the drinking age was 18 in Louisiana. The MS Coast and State were technically dry but as long as bar owners paid the "black market tax" booze flowed freely.
First, thanks for putting together the most accurate and thorough account of what happened. I live not far from the accident site, so this has always been a part of local lore for many years. What struck me most was the cost to prepare Ms. Mansfield. The cost to embalm and prepare her body with a casket, $2,883, was steep for the year 1967. The US dollar is practically 9 times more today. That would mean, in today's cost based on today's worth of the dollar, her body preparation ran more than $25,500. Like I said . . . steep! I know someone who works for a local funeral home and I asked him about that cost. He said Bolton Funeral Home was taking advantage of the fact that she was a rich, Hollywood celebrity. He estimates that the total cost, even for a premium service back in 1967, shouldn't have run more than $400-500 and cannot see how this should have gotten over a thousand even if there were some additional services requested. Bolton made a killing off her and her family.
My grandparents took us to Biloxi for a week and we had dinner at Gus Stevens. Jayne Mansfield was performing and we were not allowed to be in that room because we were children. We begged if we could get a peek at a movie star and they let us have a peek. It was kind of a thrill since we were such sheltered kids. The next day we woke up to the news. It made us all feel kind of somber and sick.
Very, very well done video sad as the death of Jane Mansfield was at the time. She certainly will not be forgotten and now that we can watch her daughter Mariska live on to achieve stardom like her mother its like a part of her is still here with us. She was killed when her head hit the back of that truck taking the top of her head off , brain matter on the truck , and road , it wasn’t a pretty open casket , back then the funeral director , or who ever made the body up just used his skills to mak it look like her , but I bet , it didn’t come close , my aunt was a funeral director , in the middle of Florida, and we went down to see her back in the early 70’s , we had a tour of the whole funeral home , and I was really into , the whole dead body thing , and she told me some of the worst facial reconstruction, stories I ever heard , and I have been to at least 100 funerals , over my 68 years , and every one of them , that had a open casket had the same impact on me , whether family or friends they all looked ,dead ! That accident changed trucking. They added the "DOT bumper" that old truckers call the "Jayne Mansfield" bumper to the back of the trailer to reduce the possibility of a car driving under the back of a trailer like that. Mariska apparently followed in her mothers footsteps and became an actress herself.
Very informative video and narration. Until now I believed Jayne Mansfield was decapitated, and also that it was foggy out. I’ve known for a long time Jayne was buried in Pen Argyl, PA- it’s only about 30 minutes from where I live. RIP Jayne and the others. At least it was fast. 😔
I find the ephemera in these historical videos endlessly fascinating. It shows what people at various times thought to be important information. Reading thru the death certificate, I am astonished at the level of detail recorded of her existence, and the absence of her social security number. It also shows that dying was an expensive business, even back then, and even when totally accidental. The bill from the funeral home nearly approaches the sales price of the Buick that caused her trip to the mortuary.
It was stated that the Buick was $5000 ish new. That was a heck of a lot of money in 1967. Believe minimum wage was $1.25 hour then. Probably most working people then were driving 49-54 basic sedans still.
@@davestewart2067 Yes, absolutely, which makes the bill from the mortuary home even more unbelievable. At least when buying a car, you can shop around and haggle and walk away from any deal you don't like. With the mortuary, there is hardly a chance to do any of those things. It's either pay up, or else.
@@davestewart2067 Middle class people could have afforded a car newer than 1954 in 1967 but remember Buicks were higher end cars, just a step under a Cadillac.
My respect to the truck driver who instantly sprung into action and took the children out of the car and tried to see if there were survivors, it wasn’t his fault, speed was to blame from the driver of the car. Tragically, three people died that night, one being the beautiful Jayne Mansfield, her most important role, mother to her babies.
I was in the Philippines when the accident happened and the newspaper headlines read "Jayne Loss Head" along with a photo of the inside of the car. There is another TH-cam video from the museum that has the Mansfield car. Interesting video. Thanks!.
Well done video. That summer i was a 10 yr old staying the summer with my grandparents in Pittsburg Ks. My grandma was shook by the news story and I first heard the word "decapitated". My vocabulary did not include that term.
I was following a semi this past Wednesday near Richmond. I asked my wife if she knew what the bars were called on the back of the trailer? Of course she had no clue, most people don’t. I told her they’re called Mansfield Bars. They were mandated on all trailers following the death of Jane and the others in the car.
I don't believe they were mandated for quite a while after the accident but this accident did play a role in them finally being mandated. They probably would not have changed the result of this accident if hit at high speeds they usually fail especially if its a heavy car like a 1966 Electra.
So now there is a bumper on the back of all semi trailers, and it's called a Mansfield Bar. It was designed to keep vehicles from going under trailers when they get rear ended.
So many people have died from car and airplane crashes its sickening and terrifying, progress is a transportation apocalypse. "Here today gone tomorrow" no its actually worse than that "Here today gone today" This temporary illusion we call life.
Thank Jesus, Jane put her kids in the backseat!!! An Angel was watching out for them. It breaks my heart to hear about anyone losing their lives over things that could have been avoided. May they all RIP.
Just imagine going on a roadtrip on a nice summer night with your children and then this happens. I mean anything can happen and this proves it. It's scary that anything is possible.

this really is an excellent and interesting video. Where did the information that they stopped at the white kitchen originally come from? Also if visibility wasn't a factor in the crash, how would you not see a truck unless neither vehicle had lights? What am I missing?

God protected Mariska and her brothers when they were moved to the back seat. Great video
Crazy fact… that bar you see on the rear bottom of 18wheeler trailers preventing cars from going up under them if they rear ended the trailer, came about because of this accident. It is referred to as…. You should have guessed, ‘the Mansfield bar.’
When I was a kid in the mid 70s, the car was part of the sideshow act at our local Prince William County Fair in Virginia. I remember never having enough money to go see any one the side shows. The fairgrounds are still there outside Manassas on Route 234.
Thank you for sharing and for clarifying this story! Ihad read that it decapitated her and now i know what happened! I was very young when this took place so I don't remember it! 😢
My wife was employed at Gus Stevens when JM. performed there. We attended her last performance the night before the accident. She was wearing the white dress. I remember the young kid who was the driver of the car... The next morning when driving by the club there were multiple police cars. I would disagree with the premise that it wasn't foggy that night..but..patches of fog . I remember driving that stretch a couple times the two things I remember most..1. Running into a swarm of bugs once or twice covered the windshield where visibility was very bad. 2. It would be clear visibility and all of a sudden you would run into a patch of fog...zero visibility. Note: I was in the military based on Biloxi at that time... I'm sure residents of that region would agree with my analysis.
@ronkotcher4834. Absolutely correct, Sir. Lots of fairly heavy fog at the crash site where my wife and I were stopped and waited for the wrecked car and Semi to be removed from the road. We were returning to Florida from Mission Bch Ca. That accident had taken place less than an hour previous to our stop.

First...Mae West Navy Life Preservers, and then Mansfield Bars.
My brother had an Austin Healey 3000 - vintage car - a Mansfield bar saved his life when he slid into the rear end of a semi in snowy weather.
ICC bumper?
A small vehicle traveling at high speed is still no match for a semi.
I’ve had dinner with Mariska a few times. She looks like her mom. She’s a friend of a friend. Super nice. And Peter too.

A lot of people might find this sort of thing morbid. I find this interesting. Especially when the videos are well made and narrated. Good job, Scott Michaels!!! You got a new subscriber!!!
When i was a kid growing up in the 70s the newspaper where i lived had the biggest news on the front page of course then you had your finance and all that, the last body of the newspaper had the murders, banks robberies and so forth, when we use to get it my dad would get the sports section and would give me the last section without saying a word, from a early age i have loved this stuff, lol, they call it death hags or at least thats what Michael's likes to call them.
Have you ever checked out his site called 'Find a death" ? its really good!!

Do you know that ALL 18 wheelers have a bar at the bottom of their trailers that is named in her honor? It's called the "Mansfield Bar" to this day.
Crushed skull with avulsion of cranium and brain.
The Mansfield bar was mandated in 1998.
My dad was a trucker they called those bars the death bar, they dont work too good
😢my condolences for that family involved on this accident, thank you for sharing unbelievable case
Thank you for your succinct account of the car accident which killed Jane Mansfield. Clearing up the rumour of her being beheaded in the accident is important. I wonder if the driver fell asleep at the wheel. RIP
Ronnie the driver was 20 yrs old and probably drowsy. Car speedometer stuck at 80 mph...Never saw the truck
I think they were all asleep, otherwise one of them in the front seat would have alerted the driver to the truck up ahead.
Wow-I'm glad this cleared up the rumor of Jayne Mansfield being beheaded. The wig confuse people. I know it doesn't help Jayne at all, but I'm sure she would be grateful that someone cleared up that rumor. It was horrible!

Outstanding Scott! Well documented and done. There is not another one so accurate. RIP Jayne!
@Joy Graham Travis
My comment is more of a question, as I noticed the hard liquor bottles in photos as well.

There was alcohol requested along with sandwiches when she received her cash pay on that night.
Just realized that was where I bought my first bottle of booze. Also at that time the drinking age was 18 in Louisiana. The MS Coast and State were technically dry but as long as bar owners paid the "black market tax" booze flowed freely.
Thank you for this story.
This story always gets to my heart. Just Sad she was so beautiful!
Well the funeral home business is a racket and always has been
Profiting off of others grief is about as low as you can go.

Once that soul is gone , they all looked like a body , with a slight resemblance to the person , they where alive ! I’m not having any service , maybe after I am put in the dirt , no embalming , no casket , naked and wrapped in a cotton sheet , then dirt on top , nothing to remind the world I was ever here , my family and close ,might come to my grave , but that will be it ….

Useable organs will be taken first for transplant for the living, and remains left then used for research and teaching purposes.

Great video. So sad. She was such a treasure. Love how you do videos.
That type of accident was commonplace in those days. Less common now with slower speed limits and airbags.
Nobody wore seatbelts in the 60's.
So now there is a bumper on the back of all semi trailers, and it's called a Mansfield Bar. It was designed to keep vehicles from going under trailers when they get rear ended.

My wife was employed at Gus Stevens when JM. performed there. We attended her last performance the night before the accident. She was wearing the white dress.
