An odd set of circumstances led to tonight: The BBC comedy Detectorists reminded me of my teenage days, performing folk music, which reminded me of many names I had forgotten, including (I'm ashamed to say) Mr Jake Thackray. This song is a resplendent example of the comedic genius of Mr Thackray, the unbounded freedoms of yesteryear and the much mourned loss, of the Great British sense of humour.
Thank you so much for posting this. I won't tell anyone about Prince Albert Victor. I saw the late Jake Thackray at the Kings Head (Islington). A true national treasure.
I first heard this song on CBC; I guess it was on "Eclectic Circus"--such funny rambling introductions to the show...vacuumland...listeners of the first water... I have just passed this on to a friend in Kazakhstan--another tick in Jake's international catalogue. And I, too, always have a rhyme in mind when he sings "conductor!"
I first heard it on the CC as well. Max Ferguson played it on his Saturday morning music show. He was a fan of Jake Thackray and played some of his other songs too. For years, Max was introduced by Allan McFee of Eclectic Circus. (Jellied gin, and those unruly chickens...)
Sadly the song is banned in some countries … such a shame as Jake would be a National Treasure were he to have been with us for longer and healthier days ✨🎸💕✨💫🌟💫✨
Sadly jake has gone, but listen to fake thackeray, very good tribute act, that apparently has the blessing of the late jakes family. Could be in an area near you, well worth a watch.

I never tire of listening to Jake! A delightful and clever song - just wonderful!

Love it. The pics set it in context so well.
What a sensational wordsmith. He left us so many laughs.
Such a genius this guy. A very accomplished musician
Excellent, ta, I'd not heard this one before.

Champion!
Original dosnt do Jake justice
Wonderfully eccentric ❤
Neil Gaiman tweeted this recently.
Ooh, I was waiting for a naughty phrase to rhyme with "conductor" ...
...brilliant....yes the suggestion was enough!....
I was expecting "eyes" to be followed by something other than "cries", too.
@robinvaucelles Clyde Gilmour used to play him on his weekly radio show on CBC.
Another good one is: The Red Velvet Steering Wheel Cover Driver
Brilliant and very scenic, but - alas! It's the wrong Prince Albert (and how often have I heard those words) at 2:49.
,,,,brilliant!...
@enochsneed: Shhhh! I don't think anyone else has noticed...

He is the Beryl Cook of music, making sex fun, now its far to serious.
