This makes me feel like he is either dead or in some sort of state in which he cannot be with his people anymore for their safety. Maybe he is possessed or something. If he did die, then his sacrifice would be similar to Arthur's. Arthur is prophesied to return, so maybe there is a way back for Mujin too :)
