Great podcast episode! ❤ I don’t think we were allowed to get our parents up until 7:30 Christmas morning. We always had one of my dad’s socks at the end of our bed (or outside our door when we got older) along with a wall calendar. It was always filled with simple things and an orange at the toe….it kept us busy for a little while. I think the use of a sock came from one of my parents childhood. Then before we would wake up my parents, we would go downstairs and my oldest sister would turn on the tree lights, my other older sister would start the coffee pot, and they made me stay on the stairs😂 (I was the youngest for many years). We knew my mom wanted coffee before we could begin so that gave us a head start. 😊
As much as it is annoying to be sick, I would much rather see my family even if they are all sick. My siblings came with cold germs to Thanksgiving this year...I was sick on Thanksgiving (which was also my birthday) from catching it from them, but my family lives states away. It's easier to say "don't come with your germs" when you get to live near your family or get to spend time with them more than once or twice a year.
Oh my the grape juice and charcoal on the beige rug LOL I feel like that may have happened at one point to me or one of my children, but i must have buried the memory. Thanks, brain. Also, WOW I was just thinking today "I wish Emily would put out some recipes of just random things like what she feeds her kids for lunch" (because i didn't have any ideas lol) AND in the past few days I've been wanting to make chicken pot pie, but don't have pie crusts. Ill have to try your recipe, thank you!!! I'd definitely be interested to hear more along those lines from you! Finally, I had to say that the back and forth with the "pop fly" conversation and Jason jabbing over and over with "you lost, congratulations Dad" had me scream laughing 🤣 Great episode. Merry Christmas! ❤🍿
My Great-Great-Grandma made crochet stockings for my siblings and me when we were little. I have used my mine every Christmas since. When I had my own children, I made them each a stocking.
32:33 my parents put oranges in our stockings, they were a part of our christmas breakfast every year. We also made ornaments each year for our christmas tree
I feel this one so deeply. One of my top pet peeves, people coming to events knowing they’re sick. Or they were sick two hours ago and “seem to be fine now”🤦🏻♀️ An older lady at church put it in these terms: if you truly love your neighbor as yourself, you won’t come and share your germs with them. You’ll stay home. I will never be able to hear about sickness without “Popping Popcorn” popping into my head. It is forever engrained 😆
Not a Christmas tradition but the best Christmas ever was when my mom mistakenly cleaned the floor with Pledge instead of Pine Sol 🤢 and it was so slippery! We opened presents, then "ice skated" in the kitchen! 😂
I thoroughly enjoyed this episode and laughed out loud many times. I am so sorry for all the popcorn popped in your household! I do not blame you for wanting to not go to gatherings! I was just popping popcorn this past weekend :( Thank you for the read aloud recs, two of them we are reading now for Read Aloud Revival's Christmas school. I think Christmas/Advent school we will do every year as it has been making this season more focused and enjoyable for us. We also do St. Nicholas day and do not do Santa in our home. When we go out and see the Santas around town my son will say "hey mama that guy is kind of dressed like St. Nicholas," lol. During Advent we put straw in our nativity manger for extra good deeds we do and then we get a nice family gift or special outing during Christmastide. In our household we exchange books and maybe open stockings on Christmas day and gifts on the Feast of the Epiphany on January 6th. It has been a great way to really celebrate Christmastide and the true Christmas season. We do allow gift exchange with extended family on Christmas day since we don't want to dictate traditions for other family members. We leave most Christmas decorations up until Candlemas as well :) I was wondering if y'all can do a podcast on movie recommendations for the whole family? I am wanting to have some family movie nights and it is tough with my sensitive six year old boy. Thanks! -Kat
My husband and I have stopped family gatherings! I have a sister in law who ALWAYS brings her kids to gatherings while they’re very sick! Last year two of her children slept the entire day during thanksgiving and I reached over and touched my niece and she was burning up, two nights later, one of my daughters was sicker than I had ever seen her and had several seizures. So I am totally against family gatherings, one persons “sniffles” is another person’s flu!😭🥴
I grew up in the days of 8mm home movie cameras. We always had Christmas at my grandmother’s house. One “tradition” we had is that Uncle Ben got to go in the living room first with his home movie camera with 2 giant floodlights. He got yearly footage of me and my cousins being blinded by the bright lights, shading our eyes as we rushed into the room to see what Santa brought us.
Fun episode! My family would do like Jason's family and we'd open our presents Christmas Eve night. It would be so much fun, first my sister and I would hold a little concert for mom and dad playing our instruments to Christmas songs. I remember playing Silent Night on my little kid keyboard every year. Then we would read the part in the Bible about Jesus' birth. And then my parents would tell us to go in our rooms and wait for them to bring out all the presents. It was always so exciting. Then on Christmas day we would open the presents given from our other relatives and then visit my grandparents who lived right up the road from us.
We would get a pomegranate in our stocking when i was a kid, it wasn't something we got often and we loved it😊. Took literal hours to get the seeds out though, and our parents just let us have at it by ourselves lol
I have many good memories of Christmas traditions even though some grew to drive me crazy as I got older. Aunt D. insisted to her dying day at age 94 that Santa is REAL.
I love you guys but please... Never call it "popcorn" again! That is so much worse than any other term! Conventional or otherwise! You're killing me!🤢🤣

"HE POPCORNED GRAPE JUICE THIS MORNING" 😂😂😂😂😂
My gosh. I was crying over that one.😂😂😂😂

Loved this episode. Emily, are you still Catholic? As a Catholic hearing that you at least grew up Catholic is so wonderful. I feel so seen!

Wait, does the pie crust have salt??
Turnips, not radishes get carved for Samhain.

That is very kind of you to put that disclaimer in the beginning.
Fruit in the stockings is still a thing! My kids look for them. It's the snack during the present opening.
Why can't you just say throwing up? Or vomiting? Who cares if you say it, it wss very confusing!
😁
I second this. What's the deal? We're all friends no? Are they gonna demonetize you for talking about normal bodily functions?
Maybe😅
I hate family gatherings. Just say getting sick lol don't ruin popcorn.
I love you guys but please...
Never call it "popcorn" again! That is so much worse than any other term! Conventional or otherwise! You're killing me!🤢🤣
OMG How many times are you going to say that? 🙄
So many.
