We completely understand your point of view, but why cant ppl do both, if they can afford to? Donate to orphanages & give your child the wedding of her dreams, we don't see any harm in this!! I hope you understand that there is no question of being selfish here. One will donate a part of their earnings & would like to spend the rest on their desires, which im sure, no one under the sun will consider as selfish!!
