Jocelyn Morlock - One Black Spike

We are still in shock from the news that Jocelyn Morlock has passed away at age 53.
The choir has performed two pieces of hers. We commissioned Jocelyn to write Io! Io! for our 60th anniversary concert in 2018. You can listen here: / io-io
We also performed One Black Spike at our 2015 concert, Voices of Vancouver 2. Originally commissioned by the BC chapter of the Canadian Music Centre, One Black Spike recalls train rides before the invention of seamless train tracks. Starting slowly, the music (train) gains momentum and intensity. Once the music reaches its traveling speed, the basses (train wheels?) establish their hypnotic ostinato ("Three thousand miles; immigrant labour") while complex syncopations in the upper voices add to the excitement of the ride on this new B.C. railway.
