Dawn, you should move your sewing machine and things on bottom shelf up in case your basement floods. Totes on bottom. Looks amazing!

Great motivation. My husband has had me put things into the car as I find them to donate. You’re right, having all of the stuff can feel very burdensome. My problem is the, “out of sight, out of mind” , mindset. I have a lot of work to do and your channel has been very motivating. Thank you for sharing

I just love your videos because you are so real! You didn’t go out and buy all matching bins and baskets to glam up your shelves - you used what you had, decluttered, and tidied up. That is so refreshing in the abundance of TH-camrs doing “hauls” and unboxing of all the stuff they’ve ordered and showing all the seasonal decor they’ve bought and then all the bins, boxes, and baskets they need to put everything in! I am loving simple more and more. Thank you, Dawn, for keeping it real!

As a fellow Minnesotan, I know all too well about water in the basement issues. We had water issues right after we moved into our home in 2015-2016 and it turned our basement into a dumping ground for clutter. We recently spent the entire weekend a few weekends ago going through all the stuff down there and on Monday we will begin the renovation! We are getting new electrical, flooring, drywall, paint on the walls and even the fireplace is getting painted! We wouldn’t have been able to tackle this seemingly impossible project without the encouragement and motivation I found here on your channel! Thank you Dawn!!! ❤️

OMG this is probably the first basement that looks real lol and raw, I love it. Mine is the same bare cinder block walls, concrete floors, open ceiling joists.......my issue is condensing my stuff. Time to do the basement!!!!ty!

I used to have 3 crock pots. All 3 stopped working and I only replaced 1. I borrowed 2 from my mother-in-law this past weekend when I had a party. Just took them back today. What a great feeling! Now I struggle with large items like suitcases, generator, and coolers that need to be indoors, but we don't have an attic or basement as we live in a double wide. Fortunately we have 3 walk in closets. I think we need to make the back of the master bedroom closet a "storage area" and keep all our clothes in the front. Good motivation to minimalize!

"Having a simplified house is much more important than any of the stuff in it." Can we just stop right there and frame that!?! I so, so, so agree with you :) For me, the comfort, peace and joy comes from the people around me and not the excess of things surrounding me. Well done, Dawn! Your basement looks great. I sure do understand the "basement declutter" and the fear of the "big area declutter." When we were in your season of life with littles, we used to have a storage room the size of half of your basement filled to the ceilings with containers for, ahem, "storage." I remember being so proud that everything was so "well contained" in those probably 20-24 large containers..oh my how seasons do change. We no longer have a basement and the garage and attic is the only vessel for storage. The containers are under ten in totality now, which include everything from photos to my husband's "keepsakes" to school papers from the kids to seasonal decor. I have been procrastinating going through the sentimental ones..the kid's papers. I need to let those go bc the cedar chest is packed full of cards and papers already. I am getting anxiety just typing this....eek.......

The moisture over time causes damage. With all the space that's cleared inside the house, I'm sure it could be placed in a small corner. Being insight, it could be used more often & the kids could learn on it - if they haven't already. It cost more to refurbish than to maintain. Love the videos! Appreciate opening your home to the world. Great ideas!

    • @kathleengarness1660

I agree with this - the metal parts will rust. I'd keep the sewing machine on the main floor somewhere or in a drier space.

My life has been completely changed after discovering you. I have always been a ‘messy’ person, full of artful ideas, but then ‘stuffing’ the aftermath. My mom always got frustrated with me and would say, ‘Why can’t you be more like your sister?!’ I could never understand why, and I prayed to God to help me become organized. I struggled for years. Somehow I stumbled upon your videos and it instantly clicked with me. I finally understood that I need to just be simple and categorize. The biggest impact was the paper clutter. I literally had a whole dresser full of it, after my bout with breast cancer. I just stuffed everything, from cards to bills. WHAT A LIFE CHANGER!!! I don’t know why I was keeping all the papers. It was the ‘What if’ factor. I now have a tote which has compartments. I now can find stamps!! This is definitely God’s blessing to me. Thank you!!!

I live in South Dakota and I think all of this extra rain has helped my mom realize what is and isn't important in the basement. They've lived in their current house for 21 years and this is the first time they've had water in the basement. 4 whole inches! This is helping my mom go, "Oh, this stuff has been down here and now it's ruined/we had to move it... is it really that important?"
    It's been SO NICE.

Wow. My house was also built in 1940's and basement looks like yours! I call it--The Final Frontier...lol. I'm working a little everyday to declutter it. It felt magical to post stuff online for free and see people carry it off! Now I'm working on an ancient "coal room" that is wet and dark. Thanks for your encouragement! You rock.

My big scary project is all my childhood stuff. I went through stuffed animals and dolls to some degree a few years ago and also my massive T-shirt collection from various camps and events, but now it’s all the scrapbooks, stuff to be scrapbooked (which I’m never gonna do now...), photo albums, journals, and just items that I kept that remind me of special times in my life. I have ottomans filled to the brim with them in my apartment and multiple boxes and drawers full of stuff at my parents. It’s so much that I honestly don’t think going through it item by item and deciding on whether to keep each thing will work. I honestly think I’m going to have to dream up a system of what I’m okay with keeping and storing and then go through my stuff with those end goals in mind. But how to find the time! Especially when it’s such an emotional thing!

Thank you for setting such a great example for us to follow. My husband & I finally finished decluttering & organizing our garage so that we can fit our vehicles in there. As we were decluttering I kept thinking that I needed to go out & buy more boxes to store stuff, but I've forced myself to work with what I have instead. After helping my hubby with all his tools & stuff, I now have 2 extra clear boxes to use. I'm so glad I didn't go out & buy more. Also, I've waited patiently for 1.5 years for my hubby to be ready to declutter his stuff in the garage. I remembered to be super positive & to help him make decisions as to what to keep & what to get rid of. I've been decluttering our entire house for 3-4 years now & the garage is the last area that we needed to go through. I could tell it was hard for him but I'm so glad we did this together. Yay!

Yes! Doing it in layers is so much easier. I've been a minimalist all my life. But when you first have kids it EXPLODES. Too much stuff. So for the past 6 years we have been on this journey again. And its not a konmari thing where you do it once and done. Its a journey. And it ABSOLUTELY yes gets EASIER with every layer of #decluttering you do. Great video Dawn!

This is so EXCELLENT! I see so many reorganization/organization/storage videos where so much is stored directly on the floor. IF you've ever been through water in the basement, sewer backup, sump pump failure, flooding, etc., you learn very quickly to NOT store items directly on the floor.

Thank you for the motivation. I am in a week by week declutter process simply because I cannot do it in one go because of my 10-12 hour work days....so what little time for myself I do have is half wasted on housework and declutter...How did this happen to my life? What happen to my life!!!!? It feels fantastic to take books to the book exchange or linen to the recycle containers. Still working out how and when I can declutter my work life and free myself a Monday or Friday...By 2020 we must have moved so far forward that I only have to work a 4 day week, I am working on this, this is my next serious goal. I will achieve it as I reach my extreme minimal house interior declutter. Like you, I already don't have too much but I need to cut down on clothing that is stored and hasn't been worn! Old letters and kids toys and clothes not been used but kept for heart's sake. I will be bagging some more keepsakes this weekend, throwing out memories that are not needed for the future, items others can better use.

Hi Dawn I just wanted you to know how much these videos help me. I know you dont get paid enough to so what you do, but I hope you know you're making an impact. I'm a young mom raising 3 young kids and I've watched your videos since you had about 15K (btw I'm sure you'll have several million in no time, because you're changing lives). I rewatch your videos over and over when I need some motivation. My mental health has been struggling, and although I've been trying to declutter and minimize, today I decided to really buckle down and get rid of absolutely everything we dont use or love anymore. I have 10 trash bags full of stuff, keep in mind I've been doing this for a while so I had already gotten rid of so much. Even though it doesnt look like much of a difference (a lot of unused stuff in closets and drawers), mentally I feel like I can take a sigh of relief. Thank you so much again for the time and effort you put into your videos. Just when I think you've shared all there is to share, every new video is equally as helpful, unique, and necessary. You're an angel 💜 thank you

When the person asked if you are moving, I am surprised, as many people bring a lot in after garage sales too. Anyway, this is great motivation for me. I have so many areas in my house to tackle right now, it is more like, "what don't I have to tackle?" I am trying to do some projects every day on vacation, (after we arrived home from out of town) that have been put off way too long. The interesting thing is that I will keep things, that if there became a scarcity of items, would definitely not be on the priority list at all.

I love your last comment about moving!....because I have never been happier than when we were about to move & we lived in a staged house! It was calm, easy to clean, people could come by at a moments notice, & now that we've moved into our new home & unpacked Im back to dredging daily through all our stuff, stuff, & more stuff! You give me inspiration every week to keep going! & it is so funny how the more stuff I get rid of the more stuff I think I have, if that makes sense. I finally did my 10yr old & 7yr olds rooms & they've been maintaining them for 2 weeks! Oh also I took your advice & removed all the toys from their rooms & they've been in the garage in boxes....oh guess what neither girls has asked for a single thing out of those boxes! Lastly your video on "editing" helped take away the stress to get it done all at once! I find little wins every week (like the girls bedrooms) just building & building to a better life!

We had a dumping area in the back of my basement. Which pretty much when we moved in in January we would just put everything we didn't know where to put there. However we are hosting Thanksgiving this year and as part of our house preparation we went through the entire dumping area. I was shocked to see how everything either fit somewhere else or could be given away or thrown away. And now we have an entire space we can use! That before we avoided completely. So my organizing hack is to invite people over that you want to impress a little and you will do amazing things. I love your videos!

We have instituted a power half hour in a family zone (idea from Jordan Page of FunCheapOrFree) every day. I pick an area of the house that needs work and then, as a family, we turn on some music, set a timer for half an hour, and declutter and clean in that space together. We have lots of clutter to get through, but it is surprising the headway we are making!

I did my garage yesterday! I didn’t go through every bin bc my goal was mostly to tidy so that it reflected the rest of the house. I would love a basement, not to fill, but so that the garage could be my husband’s space. I love Minimalism bc every time I think I “need” decor I pause and decide I don’t. 😉 Thanks for being so motivating!

@@jennylhenry78 , it's sold at most home improvement stores, Wal-Mart, etc. in the paint area. It comes in a spray but I used the gallon can. It's expensive but MUCH less expensive than basement sealers.

I have been working on deep cleaning and minimizing my living room this week. It’s going great, and I keep reviewing your videos when I get stumped. 💕
My BIG project is my three car garage that is filled to ABOVE my head. Long story! One way that I am slowly tackling it is to find things that I KNOW can be thrown away. I fill my trash bins the night before trash pick up and put one bulk item at the curb once per week. It has been slow, but it feels great to finally feel like I am making progress. I cried yesterday after completely revamping my office desk. I’m moving forward after leaving an abusive marriage, and these steps are helping me heal and grow. Thank you for your videos!❤️

I love watching all of your decluttering videos! I started minimizing about 8ish years ago and find that it is something that I am constantly having to do (though not as much in the beginning) to make sure the clutter doesn't creep back in. I watch your videos for inspiration and encouragement to keep on top of my household. Thank you!

Impressive Dawn! I handle intimidating spaces by using Flylady's principle of setting a timer for 15 min - sometimes even only 5 - sometimes I reset the 15 min timer multiple times. First, it makes me commit to a daily effort - but doesn't overwhelm or depress me. I am different from you in that I am sentimental and have inherited items from several departed family members. I don't mind going back through those items 6 or 9 mos later because I can easily let more go when I don't purge all at once. I recently did my second pass through my grandmother's crystal glasses and may let the rest go in the next few weeks. My laundry is in the basement, so when I start a load, I try to find a box or area to poke into to grab a few things to purge. I keep a box near my back door (rarely used area) and add to it daily. My goal is to donate 2 boxes per week (sometimes more) and that goal keeps me honest with myself that I'm really getting rid of things. But I have 20 years of stuff (much was in the basement) I have been going through.

Your 3 tips are very helpful. Today I tackled a chunk of my basement with broken furniture and baby items we no longer need. My basement has been a long neglected project. I can't believe you were able to haul up the contents of yours!! Mine would take me a whole day to drag up. I've been taking bites out of the project for months and I am finally beginning to see a change! My problem areas now are the places my husband has significant junk piled up. Our computer area, a closet in the laundry room, a chunk of the basement and not to mention the garage!

My husband and I cleaned and organized our basement in January. It was embarrassing how much we had to donate and throw away. We made piles of things to donate, throw away and keep. Then, organized the keep pile. It was a large project and took a week to accomplish but well worth the effort. We both came away with a determination to not get cluttered with things like that again!

Thank you for these great tips. Sorry about your basement. I had that happened a few times in a prior home. I am struggling with purging my children's baby clothes...and they are 33, 31, and 29! lol I have my first Grandson arriving in a few weeks, so all the little Osh Gosh overalls I will be sending to my DS #1. I need to figure out how to narrow it done to like one or two baby outfits each as a memory. Also, I would LOVE to see you display that milkglass somehow of your Grandma's. It would be a really cool thing in your house.

Throw pillows and deals 😂 My basement used to be 5x as bad now it's probably 3x. My tip? 15 minutes like you said (sometimes it turns into a couple hours) a few times a week and duh trash or donations first. If I have anything seasonal I'm gonna try to store it in a closet upstairs if possible.

Thanks for showing me the basement! I feel like I have more realistic expectations now on trying to be a minimalist. I don't have hardly any storage space... and I guess I felt like I was a failure at decluttering, when maybe it's more a situational thing for me.

Keyisme remember when you are trying to be a minimalist 200sq feet of stuff in a 4,000sq foot home looks way different then the same amount of stuff in a 400sq foot home. Sometimes if you have a small space you need to go even more simply.
