Turns out the dumplings are not vegan as one of you pointed out (they include anchovy sauce UGH) and I stupidly missed it in the ingredients list. Sorry about missing that, guys!! :( Just letting you know to not get this brand LOL there are usually other brands of vegetable dumplings that are vegan friendly - but remember to triple check the ingredients list so you don't mess up like i did!

I have been enjoying Korean dramas on Netflix. It is so refreshing to see how characters in Korean culture are eating noodles in the storyline, and eating rice, and not obsessing about low carb this and that. Yes, many Koreans eat meat like Westerners, but they also seem to have veggies and more balanced portions. Not to mention, I just love watching the Korean series Crashing Land on You. It is so cute, and Captain Ri is a hottie!

Personally, I think once you know how the Korean, Japanese, and Chinese writing systems work it's actually really easy to tell them apart. It might be only because I learned how to read and write Korean and Japanese but I think that Hangul is a very logical and systematic writing system and that it looks very different from the other scripts with its circles and geometric shapes. Also Hiragana and Katakana also have a very distinct appearance.

Hi Rose. You got me hooked on Korean food a couple of years ago when I first found your channel and was trying to eat a more plant based diet per my doctor's instructions. We have a lot of small Asian markets in Raleigh, but I had never heard of H Mart until I saw this video. Yesterday I discovered that there is an H Mart about 15 miles from my apartment so I had to go. $130 later, it is now going to be my go to market (even though I work in a grocery store LOL). Thanks for turning me on to Korean food and H Mart.

As a very white person, the way I differentiate between different Asian languages is like this: Chinese languages have characters that are kind of... blocky? Japanese characters are more flowy, and Korean has circles. I don’t know if that’s offensive, that’s just how I learned to figure it out growing up in Queens with lots of different Asian neighborhoods. 🤷🏻‍♀️

"You know when you think something is vegan but it has a random animal ingredient"
a few days ago when I went to the store they were out of basil besides a tube of basil paste, so I shrugged "ehh ok this works" and grabbed it later, when I was preparing dinner I grabbed the basil and put it in the dinner. Whilst it simmered I sat down to read the back "basil, oil, salt, whey, whey? Dang it." It had never occurred to me that they would put whey in herb paste but ok then. 🤷‍♀️ I dont even know why. Halp, I cant even trust veggies
Ps the way I tell between Japanese, Chinese and Korean writing as a English only speaker
    Korean writing= lots of circles
Japanese writing= a mix of complex and simple letters
Chinese writing= very complex square- ish letters

I've been trying to gather ingredients for specific soups you've made on your channel. Really difficult in my rural upstate NY town lol. Gochujaru has been the most difficult, I'm trying not to order it on Amazon.
Currently I'm looking to make Doenjang-jjigae, and the fermented soybean paste has been the struggle. I've been able to find "Healthy Boy Soybean Paste" and wondered if I could use that? Or if there's a Korean word for it that I should be looking for!

    • @missragsdale
      @missragsdale 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

fermented soybean paste is called "doenjang" in korean. the healthy boy one is not the same thing, that's a dipping sauce and doenjang is more of a raw-ish paste. doenjang is similar to miso, which is sometimes easier to find (i can find miso at almost any grocery store where i live but have to go to a special korean mart 50 miles away if i want doenjang). if you want to avoid amazon you can find korean ingredients on sites like yamibuy or asianmart, or even hmart sells some stuff online.

I'm 99% sure the mi goreng is vegan, my local supermarket has them and the vegetable flavoured ones have an import sticker that says vegan, the hicken flavour ones say vegetarian (So I assume that one has milk powder or something). You could always email the comapny to confirm though!

I’m Japanese, natto with Kimchi, scallion goes very well! Mixing with udon/ soba is common in japan as well.
Try Japanese natto brands, have no idea if Korean brands are good.

I buy chestnuts whenever I shop at an Asian grocery store. Sometimes they are roasted and shelled and sometimes in the shell. But I love them.

In Germany in bigger cities we usually have smaller Asian supermarkets, you know, family run ones and since I live in a metropolitan area that has a huge amount of Asians, especially Chinese, I luckily have a good amount to choose from, but recently there's been am Asian chain store that opened in a lot of the bigger cities in the city centre (Berlin even has multiple locations) and a few months ago I went on a shopping spree and bought all kinds of rice noodles to find the ones I like most and I spent ages in there, they have so many! I checked the ingredients lists and just a few didn't make it into my shopping cart (too many E numbers for my liking) and I didn't buy any vermicelli/angel hair type, but otherwise I got like one from almost every brand they had, everything from 1mm to 10mm width and I mean, I did get a few staples like soy sauce and some expensive frozen dumplings and vegan German kimchi, but I ended up spending over 50€ on all of that and I think at least half of it was rice noodles 😅
I could feed an army, but I definitely am not worried about running out of noodles in this pandemic 🤣

In the United States its something of a tradition to have chestnuts during wintertime, so they're really easy to buy in supermarkets in the right season. (My sister buys them all year round from Asian grocery stores, though.) I once went to a Christmas party where they had roasted chestnuts, cracked into the skin with my teeth since it's easier than using fingers, and this grandma was like, "You don't eat the shell," and I was so embarrassed since it probably looked weird to her.

Yesssss!!!! I love hmart! Where I’m at (nyc) the prices are so much cheaper then other grocery stores like Stop N Shop.
Also @cheap lazy vegan if you look (usually there’s a whole aisle with different types of seaweed and brands) , or ask someone bc there’s always the full sheet roasted seaweed in 3 large squarish packs!!! So yummy!!

I’m lucky enough to live in a place (the Seattle area) where I have 3 big Asian grocery chains to choose from. H Mart tends to be expensive, at least here. Ranch 99 is the spot for cheap. All Asian grocery stores, however, always have the best produce, hands down. I started learning to cook Asian foods in truth because I started shopping at Asian markets for the produce! As a non-Asian, I have made the effort to learn a few Chinese and a lot of Japanese characters so I can kinda figure out food packaging! Korean remains a bit of a mystery but I recognize it because it’s so different than the other two. This video was awesome!

That non-dairy green tea ice cream was previously sold at Trader Joes but they've discontinued it! I love that and the strawberry flavor when they used to sell it. Guess I'll stop by H-Mart next time to check if they have it here in the states!
I hated natto before too. A friend of mine made me try it at least 5 times before I started to like it. Japanese eat it with chopped green onions mixed in. The sauce that accompanies it isn't vegan due to the bonito/fish stock in it so when I do eat it, I substitute it with soy sauce and mix it in with the mustard packet that accompanies it. Remember to stir, stir, stir the natto really well before consuming! ;)

Tysm for this video!!! I’m trying to eat more plant-based, and I usually shop at H-mart, and trying to find vegan items can be a challenge. This video is super helpful!!!!
As for being able to tell the difference between Chinese, Korean, and Japanese writing, for the most part i can tell the difference between them. I’m not an expert, nor can I actually read any of the languages (although I have tried to teach myself Japanese through workbooks), but I’ve noticed that Japanese, esp hiragana (one of 3 Japanese characters sets, the other 2 being kanji and katakana) the characters are made of very few strokes. Many of the Japanese characters I’ve seen that are made with more than one stroke are mostly straight lines at sharp angles. Korean, on the other hand, I’ve noticed that the characters not only have more strokes, but that many of the characters I’ve seen incorporate more circles and ovals. I’ve noticed that Chinese characters have the most strokes, and contain mostly non-rounded shapes like squares and rectangles. For me, I find it most difficult to tell the difference between Chinese and kanji because, to me, they look very similar. These are just just my observations I’ve made after living in both NYC’s Chinatown and Koreatown, as well as watching anime ( 😂 only with subtitles tho, I dislike the dubs with a passion).

You should also check out their oyster mushroom and king oyster mushrooms! There's a channel on TH-cam called Wicked Kitchen and he makes some amazing dishes with these mushrooms! King oyster mushrooms can be used to make vegan scallops and vegan pulled pork! Regular oyster mushrooms can be used to make bbq.
