    FF2 is pretty much the Dark Souls of the FF series.

    I really like the emperor as the main villain in FF2. My brain shut'd down when it was revealed there was sort of two entities and they both were different as day and night, justice and evil, god and the devil, order and chaos. In Dissidia 12, the emperor shows his true colors in such epic way thanks to a fair translation on his quotes and professional voice acting.

    Just finished playing through the Dawn of Souls version of this game in my run through of the Final Fantasy series. Following your advice during the marathon I refused to play the game without cheats. The most significant difference between your lorerun and my playthrough was that I turned off random encounters, mostly to get rid of the troll rooms. As a consequence of the cheating, sequence breaking happened all over the place but it was still surprisingly fun. One thing I will say in regards to the theme of the game, instead of focusing on order vs chaos, I thought that the main focus was on the passing of the torch from one generation to another, especially with the inclusion of Soul of Rebirth. If the gameplay wasn't so focused on grind with such a high encounter rate this game would be among my favourite games. The character deaths are very well done and used to surprising effect. On another note, a pet theory I've developed in regards to the connecting of FF1 and FF2 is that hypothetically FF2 serves as the origin story of the four heroes of light. This adds an unprecedented amount of depth to the otherwise avatars of FF1. It also provides for an intriguing story for Leon between the two games.

      I will never forget those troll rooms... anyways, I find that idea of FFII leading into I fascinating admittedly, hadn't thought about that before. It would certainly be interesting, especially since it is confirmed that II lead into IV within only a couple generations.

    Name an FF1 character other then the central bosses? Astos, the dark elf that stole a witch's eye, put a king to sleep, usurped his throne and sends the chosen heroes on a wild goose chase just to dick with them. That guy doesn't get enough credit.

    FF2 is one of the first games I genuinely considered quiting at various points, and actually I should rephrase, the main game I got through okay, but Souls of Rebirth was so damn frustrating that I considered quiting at three different points. I never quit, once I start a game, I eventually finish it.

    I just put the pieces together: Kain's mother was Elina and his father was Phillip. Phillip died fighting the empire and both Kain and Elina were taken in by Ricard, who was Phillip's close friend. Ricard eventually dies and Kain grows up adopting the surname of 'Highwind', supposedly in honor/memory of Ricard. Wow...

    FF2 was basically the first SaGa game. The main guy who worked on FF2 went on to make Final Fantasy Legend 1-3 (SaGa 1-3), Romancing SaGa 1-3, Saga Frontier 1 and 2 etc. All the SaGa games follow the same level up system as FF2.

    I also dislike people who bash other peoples opinions, I have a lot of the directed toward me do to the fact that X-2 is my third favorite FF even after playing all of them. I grew up on FFX. Back in 2002, when I was just turning 11 years old, my father bought me a PS2 and Final Fantasy X. I have played many games before that, but FFX was the first story based game I ever played.

    Law Vs Chaos? That makes about as much sense as Pokémon Sapphire being the second coming of Jesus. Yes there's some similarities, but you could say that to basically anything. In all honesty the one that truly shows what this game is all about is hope and despair. In every situation you're in there's always a bit hope and despair lingering somewhere.
    Examples
    Hope:
    1-A rebellion was made to combat the evil emperor.
    2-A special tome that holds a spell so powerful that may help combat the enemy.
    3-Even after the death of your friends, you still manage to rescue various villages and even find Leon in the fight against the emperor.
    Despair:
    1-The town nearby was betrayed.
    2-Various friends and villages are killed often.
    3-Even Hell would not hold the emperor.
    This is why many would compare it to Dark Souls, it's all about holding on to hope, even if it's only by a thread.

    Discovered Lore about a year(ish) ago. Watching older videos compared to newer one you can definitely see raise in production and even more comfortability in-front of a camera. I really dig the videos and how analytical Lore is.
    However, I still have absolutely no clue where the hell he's recording in these. I’m fairly certain it’s where he used to/or still does work,. But then sometimes I think it might be a library

    • @Lorerunner
      @Lorerunner  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I used to work at a datacenter as an overnight tech support. While I had things running or otherwise fire-and-forget work (like server updates) I'd record these. That's also why I had no notes and was talking about games I hadn't played in years (aka from memory); because it was entirely impromptu.

    • @InTheMindOfDavid
      @InTheMindOfDavid 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Lorerunner right after you commented that I watched the Mass Effect 3 video that exploded back in the day, you mentioned it. Totally a facepalm moment for me.
      I apologize for how much I comment sometimes. You’ll bring up a point that gets my brain going and I know by the time I finish the video I’ll have forgotten what it was I wanted to say, ADD big time over here. Plus I also listen to your videos while I play video games so I’ll for sure forget. Hopefully, it’s not blowing you up. I’ll try to remember to take notes in the future so that way I can just getting everything in one comment rather than 3(or sometimes more, sorry).
      Like you legit get me thinking pretty deeply about some of the topics you’ll bring up, or with how analytical you get. As far as I’m aware you’re the only person on TH-cam that analyzes and talks about the games and the experience in the way you do. While everyone else has their critique videos of a game where they strip everything down to the nuts and bolts, you still leave everything intact if that makes any sense. I think that might be from how your videos are freeform mostly from memory and a stream of consciousness with notes as roadsigns rather than a scripted deconstruction. It’s quite nice.

    My experience of this game is entirely confined to watching a video of Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster, a remake of all six 2D FF games with a degree of consistency between them in terms of spell effects and the like, with the video showing each of the last bosses of the six games. One thing I immediately noticed in this video was that in the Emperor Mateus fight, the damage amounts dealt by the party are incredibly low compared to the fights before and after. Imagine casting a Flare-type spell (I forget what it actually was, but something high tier for sure), and having it deal like 200 damage, while the party fighter swings his sword and does like 80. I don't know how much of this might be from the heroes of FF2 just being weaker than in the other games, versus Mateus being stronger, but it definitely creates an impression that this guy who looks so much less impressive than Garland or Zeromus is nonetheless apparently much harder to actually hurt.

    I had so many questions after beating it that I replayed it many times to see if there was something I was missing. FFX-2 delivered on all the unanswered questions I had and gave me a story apart fro the original FFX that I really enjoyed. Many people say X-2 was to happy go lucky and had no real plot for a large part of the game. I personally loved that about X-2 and think the reason they did that was to make a contrast to FFX, which was very dark and offered little to no hope.

    If you think about it FF2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 were vastly different from FF1, 3, 5, 7, 9 and 11. 11 might of been an MMORPG, but it still followed the same formula of job classes or materias that let you create jobs like Manipulate Materia or Enemy Skill Materia etc.

  • @zakuguriin4521
    @zakuguriin4521 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    My brother and I had a theory that the Final Fantasy games at least up till recent years followed a specific formula. All the odd games stay close to the original game and usually follow the "Job Class" Mechanic, whereas the even games are the games where they try to do something different that breaks the mold.

    Dear Archengeia,
    I was wondering if you would review Tales of Phantasia, which I reckon is one of the best games of all time and is very underrated. I'm not sure if you've heard of it but it was on the Gameboy Advance and on the NES.
    I know many people love Final Fantasy (anyone in the series that you prefer), well this is my Final Fantasy. I just wanted to know your thought's on it and was hoping that you'd review it.

    FF2 was difficult but I dreaded over half the bosses in that game, like those giants near the end of the game. The story was pretty brilliant though for starting out back then I agree.

  • @Lorerunner
    @Lorerunner  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    I didn't mention it because there's not much to talk about it really, it was an attempt to try and increase player interaction with the story but by restrictions of technology and time ended up being merely one step away from 'hit A to continue', which is why they abandoned it and haven't gone back to it since.

    I agree with you about FFXIV. I was extremely disappointed with it and it wasn't even close to being as good as FFXI. I'm still interested to see how much the game will change when they release the 2.0 patch later this year. I don't think the game can get much worse but we shall see. I'm willing to give it another shot.

    I always thought of Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne as the most difficult RPG i've ever played, it is so easy to get killed in any random encounter if you aren't concentrating. I'll have to give FF2 a try. Grandia 2-3 will always have my favorite battle engine, its like a perfected Chrono trigger engine.

    I'm now *very* interested in seeing your review of FFVIII. Before II and III were released stateside, it had been my least favorite of the series (II comes in at worst because of the leveling system, for me).
