In the superhero genre, villains aren’t interesting because they’re villains. They’re interesting because they are Active Protagonist in their own story giving it momentum whereas superheroes are often portrayed as being nothing more than Passive Protagonist, waiting for sh!t to happen to react too and that’s what makes them very boring by comparison.

@@jaimebarba619 Firstly, not correct. He had multiple great roles, the Joker was just his *greatest*.
Secondly, the Joker was supposed to return in TDKR (3rd batman film). They had to rewrite the script and story.
Thirdly, he was at his peak in the Joker role and was only going to get better and better as he was still very young at 28 years old.
Imagine how great he would've been as the Joker in the 3rd movie with more time portraying him, more acting experience and more life experience in general.
Why he was prescribed 3 different benzos; alprazolam (Xanax), diazepam (Valium) and temazepam (Restoril) AND on top of that 2 different potent opiates; oxycodone (OxyContin/Percocet) and hydrocodone (Vicodin/Norco), I will never understand.

Actually, I think the quality of Heaths acting elevated Bales performance as well. They both did in an excellent job in this film.
Excellent point considering the fictional dynamic between the joker and the bat, their entire thing has always been about maintaining their stance and not being corrupted by the other and they compliment one another

He gave the best performance of his career and it's very hard to compete with an actor who is just so good at the character but I agree totally it elevated the entire cast too. I found this one of the more emotional movies in the trilogy to watch. Just a solid 10 all around.

I completely agree. Don't get me wrong the other one with Michael Keaton and Jack Nicolson is good but they all fail in comparison to the Dark Night trilogy. I wish so much that Christopher Nolan would continue making them and always use Christian Bale for Batman. Hands down some of my most favorite movies of all time.

As much as Heath was shining as the Joker, Christian portrayed the silent darkness lurking behind the immovable demeanour of the caped crusader.. And he nailed it.
The scene with Heath leaning out of the cop car window while driving is a scene that I’ll remember the rest of my life, it was what I picture pure insanity is like.

Bale’s performance in TDK was absolutely not dull by comparison. There’s a ton of nuance to it.
And he totally sells the man who realizes he has to sacrifice this symbol he’s created and which people have come to believe in, for the sake of his city.
He's unbelievable. It's just that Ledger's performance kinda stole the show. But they were both just spectacular.

I think it’s an extraordinary performance but I think Gary Oldman in Leon: The Professional is still my favorite. His character somehow scares me more than the Joker ever could. Also the scene where Gary Oldman plays Drexl in True Romance. It’s absurd that one actor has that much ability. Oldman was also in this film because of course he was!

Heath's performance as the joker sets a really high standard for super hero films and really showed everyone how the joker is meant to be portrayed on the screen
One of the best movies of all time
I didn't watch it for months, then I did on a Saturday night. I couldn't believe what I had just seen. A masterpiece, every bit of it!
I love the way Heath portrayed the Joker. I believe he studied the behavior of hyenas and used it for this? He took bits and pieces from all kinds of things to bring the Joker to life and it was incredible!
Really beautiful to see/hear Bale talk about Ledger's performance this way.
Heath was amazing as the Joker, by far the best version of that character, by a long way.
Weeeell, Joaqin Phoenix was excellent, too.

@@Kameleonic not on the same level as Heath, but Joaquin did great. He seemed more of a troubled, disturbed, weird Joker while Heaths was sinister, almost vicious, and very funny at the same time. Oh and that laugh!

@@mediocrejokre For sure, in an interview with Aaron Eckhart (Harvey Dent) he described the scene he did with Heath for the Hospital scene, and how before they started filming the scene Heath was talking to himself in the corner and paced around muttering and making grunting sounds. I recommend watching, it was a Larry King interview.

Heath put on such a legendary performance that every other person who would ever attempt to play Joker automatically comes up short. Can’t think of too many other performances that have had that effect. Marlon Brando in The Godfather comes to mind

Greatest portrayal of a villian I’ve ever seen
His Joker had all of the physical aspects of canon, but his work on the Character of the Joker gave me chills. I've worked with mental patients before and Heath gave me the same skittering chill up my spine that the scariest psychopaths at the mental hospital gave me. The kind of jump out of my skin unease that only comes when the fight or flight instincts are triggered. What a masterful portrayal and sadly just the tip of the iceberg for what he could have achieved. A legendary performance.

As much love as I want to give Heath, here, Bale's performance was spectacular as well. But having BOTH of them, arguably at their peak, in this film makes this one of my all time favorites. Pure brilliance from all involved.

The unforgettable Oscar ceremony that had Heath receiving the award posthumously was such a heartwarming feeling the audience had of mindbending performance by a beloved actor and human being.
If Heath survived and we got the original 3rd movie plan, then it would be the greatest DC big screen production ever. The Dark Knight is arguably the best (arguably), but if the Joker could’ve returned and teamed with Bane and Scarecrow to push Batman to his limits too the point where he would have to decide if it was worth becoming the villain to save others, it would’ve been special

And even though you’ll no doubt have more who agree with you because of the poor development of the DCEU that lead up too Snyder’s JL, I personally think that the reception and the quality of his JL movie despite having the world going against it just speaks for how good it actually was as opposed to the Dark Knight movie doing great following a movie that was highly praised and attracted a lot of interest
@@Jack-hb4dm I love ZSJL. It was a bit long, truthfully, but man, I loved it.
Why I think Dark Knight is the greatest, is because it showed us what a superhero movie could be. It showed us that comic book movies doesn't have to be campy, there doesn't need to be winking at the camera. If suspension of disbelief is anything to go by, TDK did it with aplomb.
In the end, it doesn't matter. It's like debating whether Godfather part one or two were better.

Heath Ledger was an amazing actor and it’s so sad that we never got to see how much further he would have gone in his career had he lived. The dude was only 28. I can’t imagine dying so young especially when you’ve made it this far. RIP to a legend.
I went to go see that movie with my best friend in high school. Waited in line for awhile. After we saw it once we bought another round of tickets.
I didn't get to see it in theaters unfortunately, but my siblings and uncle did the same thing. Watched it twice back to back on opening night.
It's still weird hearing Bale speak in his native tongue, I always thought he was American... And also gotta be the best Batman to date!

Christian Bale is the Best Batman. He was funny brooding emotional. All the characteristics you needed for the part. It’s just a testament to how great Heath was. Liam Neesan Cillian Murphy Tom Hardy. A amazing. Gary Oldman as well.

While I don't think the others are as good, I would not say they are just in it for the paycheck. Changing physique significantly for a role is never easy, and if you are given the time of batman, even if you aren't the best person for the job I think each actor did they their best. Also you are missing Mark Hamill and Kevin Conroy, amazing voice actors

How I wish Heath was still with us.
He's not wrong, the batman villans are some of the most fascinating villains to exist. Most of which are just normal people with major mental disorders. Batman is one of the more realistic properties of its kind. Dark and gritty. The villans help make Batman interesting. The fact that this is what one man tries to deal with on a normal basis.
Heath Ledger did an amazing job. The best live action Joker to date. It's not an easy role to play either. RIP to Heath.

Antagonists are always more interesting than protagonists. Not because we hold a deep fascination with the dark side of human nature but because they are so untethered to the morals and values we follow to maintain a stable society. They represent a kind of absolute freedom that we aspire to but know deep down it would unravel our society if we ever attained it. They are also the driving force behind any story. It’s their goals that prompt the hero into action or work in opposition to the hero’s goals. Without them there would be no dramatic tension and no story to tell. They are the story.
