Her husband, the Maharaja of Jhansi, had died in 1853, and the British refused to recognize her adopted son as the legitimate heir to the throne. This led to a dispute between Rani Lakshmi Bai and the British, which ultimately resulted in her leading the rebellion against the British. The rebellion lasted for over a year, and she was eventually successful in defeating the British. After the rebellion was over, she retired from public life and lived in peace with her subjects.
