3 Reb Beach Tapping Licks From 1989

  • Here's another Three-For-All lesson and this time we're breaking down three tapping licks hiding in a live guitar solo by fretboard stuntman Reb Beach from 1989.
    Reb is a monster guitar player who's mainly known for his early work with the band Winger, but since that time he's worked with a number of groups and artists, including Whitesnake, Dokken, Alice Cooper, and many others. His fretwork also appears in films and video games, including Sega's Daytona USA 2 and Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey (to name a few). He also appears in Wayne's World as a member of Alice Cooper's band in the background.
    This lesson takes a peek at three tapping licks found during his live solo from 1989, which was during Winger's extended tour of their debut album. There are a few bootleg versions of this guitar solo floating around on TH-cam, and depending on which version you watch, you can hear the same solo played with slight variations during each version.
    There are plenty of new and interesting things you can learn from studying some licks and ideas from a player like Reb, so be sure to play through this lesson and the licks being shared slowly until you get a feel for the fingerings, movements, and concepts overall.

    TYPO ALERT: I've been pushing myself hard to create these videos quickly, but I guess I need to slow down (a little) so I can keep some level of "quality control."
    The first arpeggio was incorrectly identified as "Emajor7" and it should be an "Emajor9."
    Sorry Mr. F#, it was an honest mistake.

    I saw Winger open up for Cinderella during the Long Cold Winter tour with Bullet Boys. The video you show is from that time. Reb took the stage to do an extended solo at some point during the Winger set and he played everything that you showed in this video. He must've come up with it and played it at every show. He also used the same guitar as in the video, that color changing Kramer. Loved that guitar. To this day it's one of the best concerts I've ever been too. All 3 bands sounded incredible.

    • @LateNightLessons
      @LateNightLessons  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks so much!
      I say upgrade that Strat!
      One of the first things I did was head to Lowe's and bought a box of black screws and changed all of the screws on the pickguard/backplate to another color.
      It's a very minor upgrade, but if your screws are rusty/dirty or you just want a new color it makes a big difference and it only cost like $2 and took five minutes to replace.
      The knobs are another easy change and I think I prefer the black ones - they match the dark areas of the sunburst finish too. Changing the pickguard is another minor tweak that makes a HUGE difference.
      From there you can continue upgrading until you make it the way you want it - it's like an old car and you fix it up and customize it. So cool!

    I am glad I came across this. I was trying to learn this pattern and it is a great starting point. I think the pattern Reb plays is a little weird as there is almost a pulsing off time part. When I slow it down it is something like this. Starting on the G string 16 9 13 16 9 (Only 5 notes) then on the B String 17 9 12 17 9 12 then G string is 16 9 (Only 2 notes) then D string is 16 9 13 then it repeats. I am not 100 % on the fingerings for the first G string part as I cannot hear it but the timing is right and it fits with what Reb is doing. Also he only moves to 3 different chords before ending. I hope this helps. It was great to explore this more in depth. The other 2 parts sound correctly tabbed out.

    • @LateNightLessons
      @LateNightLessons  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's true and I think I remember reading that tidbit about Reb as well.
      There are a number of players out there that don't really use their pinky.
      I try to use mine as often as possible, and for certain things, it really feels better to use another finger (say the third finger), but I do try to use it as often as possible.
      I had an older player stop me when I was a kid and he told me "don't be a three-fingered guitarist."

    Hooo boy... look what I stumbled upon. I am a huge Reb fan, specifically because I use tapping licks as a way to make up for... um... some of my speed-picking deficiencies, if you will. I feel that he does the same thing; as a huge Winger/Reb fan (one of my top 5 fav bands/guitarists), I have noticed that he rarely if ever uses alternate/economy-picked or even legato speed runs - his pick work in his leads is very rhythmic and dynamic and he uses the tapping for speed. I play the same way, by design - not to copy him, but because it is more natural. I'm also not as good as him.
    Some would argue that I, and perhaps Reb, have 'deficiencies' in our technique, but I would argue that playing in this manner is unique and sets players like that apart. It forces a player to think differently, and perhaps allows for more unconventional ways to access notes and rhythmic patterns during speed runs.
    I need to brush up on my knowledge and use of different modes/scales. You have a lot to teach, and are making me a better player in that regard.

  • @a.s.2426

    Have you ever figured out what Reb is doing at the beginning of that live solo? The tapped harmonic, bar-dip 'whistles' intro, then melody across the strings. He does it in other live solos, but never has it sounded so mesmerizing. Maybe in a future Reb update?

    Late comer to this video but Reb Beach is waaaay more talented than many from that era. I put him up there with Vito Bratta.

    What model is your fender?

    Magic!
    Beach is my favorite tapper and the cutting loose video has always been my favorite.
    I think you made a mistake in the last bar of lick 2.
    Reb is tapping on frets 10 for the last arpeggio.
    Lick 3 is pure Reb!
    He used the same in the dokken song too high to fly,
    in winger song and in all jus live solos with Whitesnake.
    But you made a Little mistake too I think.
    Bar 3 is 12-15 on the E string and 12-14 on the b string
    Look at 4-40!

    Thanks David, keep up the good work !

      Thank you for those corrections/additions.
      Honestly, it's a little hard to decipher some of Reb's licks as his technique is a little weird.
      He really doesn't use his frethand pinky and occasionally taps with his pickhand middle and third finger (while holding onto the pick with the thumb and index), so his approach is very different than mine and the blurry fingerings that form under his fingers are sometimes hard to make out (especially when it's played FAST).
      Thanks for chiming in here though, as those areas you've pointed out are valid, but I'm really just sharing the basic framework/idea here and not really going for an exact "note-for-note" thing.
      Besides these live guitar solos are a little frantic and full of adrenaline, so working on this stuff is like trying to capture flames shooting from a flamethrower. Hahaha!
      : )
      Regardless, good call and thank you!
      Rock on!

    What’s your bridge pickup?

    • @LateNightLessons
      @LateNightLessons  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      They're all Seymour Duncan and that's a JB humbucker in the bridge, reverse-wound (middle), and a Cool Rails in the neck.
      Thanks for watching and rock on!

    C'mon, Dave, you should know that the ones that really pushed tapping limits way further are people like Jennifer Batten and Michael Fath, even MAB.
    Reb sure is a monster, but Jennifer Batten is the queen of tapping.

    • @LateNightLessons
      @LateNightLessons  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's very true and Jennifer is a monster player.
      I met her while she was touring with Jeff Beck back in 1999, and she's also one of my FB friends.
      She's great, but her tapping style is radically different than VH's, which is what I was referring to in this lesson - the evolution of EVH's style of tapping, which players like Vito Bratta and Reb Beach pursued.
      Jennifer is coming from another direction with her tapping technique, as her style is almost "pianoistic" with multiple pickhand fingers at play.
      She has more in common with players like Stanley Jordan or Jeff Watson than she does with EVH (as far as tapping).
      Same technique, but completely different approach. Having said that though, she did completely nail all of EVH's licks in 'Beat It' though when she toured with Michael Jackson.
      So that really proved she can do anything.
      Thanks for watching!

    What happened to your guitar neck? It’s warped like a samurai sword haha
    Ignore the bland joke. Your lesson is superb.

    What's hard with this technic is to get a real pur and clean sound... Practicing, practicing!...

    The third lick was really cool. I wonder if he ever used that in a song.

    David, you are awesome! you cover up pretty much all my favorite guitarists/music content. Really cool down to the detail analysis. Your a great player and you have great tone both in rig and fingers! If you ever have time check out my channel, a opinion from a mastermind like you is always welcome :)
